African Champions League title stays in Egypt after Pyramids beats Mamelodi Sundowns

CAIRO (AP) — The African Champions League soccer title stayed in Egypt with Pyramids winning the final Sunday just seven years after the club was renamed and moved to Cairo.
The president of African soccer's governing body Patrice Motsepe presented the trophy after watching the South African club he owns, Mamelodi Sundowns, lose the second leg in Cairo 2-1, giving Pyramids a 3-2 aggregate win.

Pyramids took a first-half lead with Congo forward Fiston Mayele's competition-best ninth goal. Defender Ahmed Samy added a second in the 56th minute for the team coached by Krunoslav Jurčić from Croatia.
Iqraam Rayners cut the lead in the 75th and Pyramids survived pressure during 10 minutes of stoppage time added.
Egypt now has a record 19 African club titles by four different teams. Al Ahly has 12, including the past two competitions, Zamalek has five and Ismaily one.
Pyramids was rebranded and brought to the Egyptian capital in 2018 by Saudi sports executive Turki Al-Sheikh, who is now a key official in boxing. One year later the big-spending club's new owner was Salem Al-Shamsi, a businessman from the United Arab Emirates, who had been its vice president.

Pyramids' first African title earned a place at FIFA's Club World Cup in 2029.
Sundowns, which won its only African title in 2016, qualified to play in the United States next month in the first 32-team edition of the FIFA tournament.
The South African club was drawn in a group to play Ulsan in Orlando on June 17, then Borussia Dortmund in Cincinnati and Fluminense in Miami.

Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck to undergo Tommy John surgery
BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck's attempt to come back this season is over. Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Houck will undergo Tommy John surgery. An All-Star last season, the 29-year-old Houck went on the injured list in mid-May with a right flexor strain after going 0-3 with an 8.04 ERA in nine starts. 'Tanner's going to have Tommy John surgery,' Cora said before the Red Sox faced the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. 'He went to see Dr. Meister there in Texas and that was the recommendation,' Cora said. 'We don't have a date yet, but he's going to have it." Houck had a strong 2024 season, finishing seventh in the American League with a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts, but was only able to make five rehab appearances after going on the IL. 'Tough year for him, tough year for us,' Cora said of the season-ending news. 'But he'll kill the rehab, he'll do his job, and when he comes back, he's going to be OK.' Houck earned his first All-Star appearance by going 8-6 with a 2.54 ERA in the first half. He struggled after the break, going 1-4 with a 4.23 ERA. He worked an inning at the All-Star Game in Texas last year, giving up three hits including a homer to Shohei Ohtani. He's the third Boston starting pitcher to suffer a season-ending injury. Hunter Dobbins tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee covering first base last month and Kutter Crawford underwent right wrist surgery. The team hopes the pickup of righty Dustin May at the trade deadline from the Los Angeles Dodgers will bolster the staff. He's expected to make his first start for the Red Sox on Wednesday at Fenway. 'It was definitely a ride of emotions, up and down,' said May, sitting in the dugout on Saturday of being dealt to Boston. Guardians add Carlos Hernández to roster and call up prospect C.J. Kayfus from Columbus
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Guardians added right-hander Carlos Hernández to the roster and selected the contract of first baseman/outfielder C.J. Kayfus from Triple-A Columbus before Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins. To make room for Hernández and Kayfus, left-hander Tim Herrin and outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez were optioned to Columbus. Kayfus — a third-round pick in by the Guardians in the 2003 MLB Draft — made his major-league debut Saturday, batting eighth and playing right field. The 23-year old Kayfus started the season in Double-A Akron before being promoted to Columbus, where he batted .283 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs. ___
