Film critic Mohamed Tarek named artistic director of Cairo Int'l Film Festival - Screens - Arts & Culture

Actor Hussein Fahmy, president of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), announced that film critic, festival programmer, and cultural manager Mohamed Tarek has been appointed the artistic director of the festival's 46th edition.
Fahmy announced this during his participation in the ongoing Berlin International Film Festival — Berlinale (13-23 February).
He added that this move is part of the early preparations for the CIFF's 46th edition. This marks Tarek's first official artistic director task after serving as the deputy artistic director.
Tarek graduated from the Locarno Industry Academy in Beirut and the Durban Talents programme.
He has worked as a short film programmer at the CIFF, Dublin International Film Festival, El Gouna Film Festival, and Manassat Film Festival.
Moreover, he served as the Cinema for Development Project Manager at El Nahda Association (Jesuit Cairo).
Tarek has a broad and impactful presence in the film industry, having worked as a Selection Committee member for the Durban Film Content Shop, consultant for MedFest Egypt, and advisor to the Goethe Institute Cairo.
He has also been a member of multiple prestigious juries, including the 65th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film (2022), the 9th African Film Festival Luxor (2020), and the 4th Amman International Film Festival (2023).
Additionally, he was a member of the Arab Cinema Centre jury for Best European Film.
Tarek authored important research, including "Shaping the Narrative: Women at the Heart of the Amman Film Festival," published during the 4th Amman International Film Festival, and "On Family and Motherhood," published during the 65th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film.
He is also a member of the Egyptian Film Critics Association, further solidifying his influence and expertise within the international film community.
Tarek will replace Egyptian critic Essam Zakaria, who served as the festival's artistic director in its 45th edition (2024).
The Cairo International Film Festival, founded in 1976, is one of the region's most prestigious film festivals and the only one in the Arab world and Africa accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).
The dates of the CIFF's 46th edition are yet to be revealed.

The screening was attended by the entire film crew alongside the producers, including Egyptian producers, in an atmosphere filled with appreciation and enthusiasm from both the audience and critics. "Life After Seham" received two awards from Cairo Film Connection sponsors (ART and Ergo) in 2021, as part of the platform's ongoing support for new cinematic voices in the Arab world. This support has led to the production of a remarkable documentary that has captured the attention of Cannes audiences. The 76-minute film marks the second documentary by Namir Abdel Messeeh, the Egyptian director who grew up in France and studied filmmaking at the prestigious La Fémis school. In this work, Abdel Messeeh continues to explore themes of identity, belonging, and memory, offering a deeply human perspective that resonates with viewers. Mohamed Sayed Abdel Rahim, Head of Cairo Industry Days at Cairo International Film Festival, expressed his great happiness at the film's warm reception at its premiere, saying: 'We are extremely proud to see one of Cairo Film Connection's projects achieving such international success and recognition at a festival as prominent as Cannes. The Egyptian pavilion at the Cannes Film Market (Marché du Film) earned top honors, securing the Best Pavilion Design Award in 2025. This coveted recognition highlights Egypt's superior design, dynamic programming, and successful visitor interaction among its global peers. The Egyptian pavilion, jointly organized by the Cairo International Film Festival, El Gouna Film Festival, and the Egyptian Film Export Committee (EFEC), succeeded in providing an integrated experience that reflects a collaborative spirit in orchestrating events which seamlessly blend cinematic promotion with impactful professional outreach to global filmmakers. The President of the Cairo International Film Festival, Hussein Fahmy, expressed his happiness at winning the award, stating: 'This achievement further confirms the excellence the Egyptian pavilion has achieved in the market, as it was designed and its activities organized based on a clear vision aimed at highlighting the diverse Egyptian cinema.' 'We were eager to offer interactive and professional activities that bring together Egyptian and international filmmakers, reflecting a spirit of cooperation and partnership we believe in. This achievement is not just a culmination of our joint efforts, but also a platform to enhance the international presence of Egyptian cinema and support the film industry in Egypt.' He added, 'This achievement further confirms the excellence the Egyptian pavilion has achieved in the market, as it was designed and its activities organized based on a clear vision aimed at highlighting the diverse Egyptian cinema.' The pavilion witnessed a variety of activities, including discussion panels, pitching sessions, and workshops aimed at fostering cinematic cooperation and bolstering regional and international film production.
