Andrej Jakimovski helps Colorado stun Baylor

Reuters23-02-2025

February 22 - Andrej Jakimovski scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists Saturday as Colorado rallied in the second half to upset NCAA Tournament hopeful Baylor 76-74 in Big 12 play at Boulder, Colo.
RJ Smith added 13 points for the Buffaloes (11-16, 2-14 Big 12), who hit 58.3 percent of their shots in the second half and also made 13 of 17 free throws. Julian Hammond III contributed 12 points and Sebastian Rancik tallied 10 points.
Norchad Omier stood out with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Bears (16-11, 8-8), his 15th double-double of the season and the 83rd of his career. But it wasn't enough to prevent his team from suffering a bad loss that could affect its NCAA hopes.
Langston Love added 17 points, while Jeremy Roach and Jalen Celestine hit for 11 each. But second-leading scorer VJ Edgecombe, who was averaging 15 points per game, made just 2 of 9 shots and finished with eight points.
Trevor Baskin's three-point play with 6:43 left gave Colorado the lead for good at 62-59, starting a 12-2 run that gave it a 10-point advantage with 4:32 left after two Bangot Dak foul shots. Edgecombe's follow dunk with 4.0 seconds remaining got Baylor within two but it didn't have enough time to finish the comeback.
The main storyline prior to tip-off was whether Baylor could take advantage of a softer stretch late in the season with three of its next four games against teams with no realistic chance of earning an NCAA bid.
But the Bears couldn't get off the mark right away, managing just 10 points in the first 10 minutes and falling behind 18-12 with 7:24 left when Smith converted a short jumper off Baskin's feed.
Baylor finally gained some traction late in the half behind Love, who scored 10 points in the final 3:51. The last three came on a 23-footer from the wing with a second left, enabling the Bears to take a 32-30 edge to the break despite making only 9 of 36 attempts from the field.

NFL Draft flop Shedeur Sanders was stopped by cops for speeding two weeks before getting caught driving over 100mph in Cleveland

The revelation that Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders had been caught speeding by police in the city didn't come as a surprise to law enforcement. Yesterday, it was revealed that Sanders was pulled over in the suburb of Strongsville on Tuesday by authorities who issued a citation. The rookie quarterback out of Colorado was clocked driving at 101mph, 41 miles over the posted speed limit. Nearly a day later, it's been revealed that this is the second time this month that Sanders has been stopped for reckless driving. Back on June 6, Sanders was stopped in another Cleveland suburb - Brunswick Hills - by the Ohio State Patrol. According to records, Sanders was pulled over for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone at 12:24 in the morning. A spokesperson for the team told that the team has addressed the citations with the rookie. "He is taking care of the tickets," team spokesman Peter John-Baptiste told the media outlet. For the June 6 incident, Sanders faces $269 in fines and court costs for his recklessness. As for the most recent ticket, he has the choice of either paying the $250 fine or fighting the fourth-degree misdemeanor charge in court on July 3. Sanders was tipped by many - his own father included - to be a top-five draft pick. But the former Colorado quarterback suffered one the most shocking slides in NFL history. He was eventually selected by Cleveland in the fifth round with the 144th overall pick - not before the Browns had taken ex-Oregon star Dillon Gabriel.

James Wood's walk-off HR lifts Nationals over Rockies in 11

June 19 - James Wood hit a two-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the 11th inning, his second home run of the game, and the Washington Nationals snapped their 11-game losing streak with a 4-3 win against the visiting Colorado Rockies on Thursday. Jacob Young led off against Seth Halvorsen (1-2) by bunting pinch runner Riley Adams to third. With the infield in, Michael Toglia made a diving stop on CJ Abrams grounder for the out at first base and Young held at third, bringing up Wood, who had hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Toglia singled leading off the Colorado 11th against Ryan Loutos (1-0) and runner Ryan McMahon scored from second to make it 3-2. McMahon had two hits for the Rockies, who had won four straight for the first time since May of 2024. The Rockies got two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth, but Trevor Williams got Brenton Doyle to ground into a force play. In the bottom half, Abrams led off with a single and Wood lined a homer to center, his 19th of the season, for a 2-0 advantage. Colorado quickly tied it. Orlando Arcia singled with one out in the fifth and scored on a double by Jordan Beck. Mickey Moniak lined a single to right, scoring Beck with the tying run. McMahon singled leading off the sixth and, with one out, Doyle doubled him to third. Cole Henry replaced Williams and struck out Sam Hilliard and Arcia to end the threat. Zach Brzykcy retired the first two Rockies in the 10th. Hunter Goodman walked, but Brzykcy struck out McMahon on a 3-2 pitch. Alex Call led off the 10th against Ryan Rolison and bunted automatic runner Brady House to third. With the infield in, pinch hitter Amed Rosario grounded out and Keibert Ruiz also grounded out. Williams allowed two runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one. Chase Dollander went six innings for the Rockies, allowing two runs on six hits. --Field Level Media

Shamed Rufus McLean called up by USA... and could face Scotland at Murrayfield later this year

Shamed former Scotland star Rufus McLean is set to make a controversial return to international rugby with the USA - and could potentially face Gregor Townsend 's side at Murrayfield this year. The ex-Glasgow Warriors winger looked set to become a regular fixture in the Scotland squad when he won three caps and scored twice on his debut against Tonga in 2021. Then came the shocking revelation McLean had subjected his former partner Cara Haston to a two-year campaign of domestic abuse. Handed a 120-hour community payback order by Sheriff Matthew Auchinloss and banned from contacting Haston for 10 years, the former Merchiston High pupil was sacked by Scottish Rugby for 'gross misconduct and breach of contract'. Now, having since moved to America, he is set to return to the international fold with the US after fulfilling World Rugby's regulation that states a player is eligible to switch nationalities after a three-year 'cooling off' period in which they haven't been capped. McLean's final Scotland appearance was on July 16, 2022. Now McLean could play against Scotland for the USA in the Autumn Test series He has been named in the USA Eagles' squad for their summer fixtures and could make his debut against England at Audi Field in Washington DC on July 19. McLean could also line up against Scotland at Murrayfield later this year when the countries meet in the November Test series. Boston-born McLean moved to the US last year when he was signed by the Colorado-based American Raptors before switching to the Houston SaberCats earlier this year. USA Eagles head coach Scott Lawrence said: 'Generally across the outside backs, one of the things we wanted to do was increase the team speed. 'So when you look at a guy who runs 10.4 metres per second, and who has played at a high level of rugby, you go: 'Yeah, that's a guy that helps us achieve that'. 'It's good to have him (McLean) in the mix this year. I think that's a huge one.' McLean engaged in a campaign of 'aggressive' and 'controlling' domestic abuse against his former partner. He admitted in court he had regularly sworn at her and been verbally abusive towards her, pushed her to her injury, tracked her movements via her phone's location service, requested passwords for her social media accounts and dictated what she could and couldn't wear.
