Mediation Key To Industrial Harmony, Cost Savings In Workplace Disputes

GEORGE TOWN, June 27 (Bernama) -- Mediation, as a primary mechanism for resolving workplace disputes, helps save time and costs while preserving industrial harmony.
Human Resource Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong stated that industrial relations officers (IRO) under the ministry successfully resolved 65 per cent of cases referred to the director-general of the Department of Industrial Relations annually via mediation, representing over 3,000 cases in 2024.
"In other words, only 35 per cent of disputes proceeded to the Industrial Court.

"If each case appearing before the court costs both employers and employees about RM20,000, we are looking at cost savings of more than RM60 million in 2024 alone," he said in his keynote address at the inaugural Industrial Mediation Symposium 2025 held here recently.
Sim added that even before cases are referred to the Industrial Court, the Department of Industrial Relations under the ministry employs alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms, primarily through conciliation meetings, to settle disputes amicably.
Currently, he said, 122 IROs under the ministry serve as conciliators to help workers and employers resolve conflicts swiftly and peacefully.
Sim said these officers receive professional mediation training through collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) at the International Training Centre in Turin, Italy, as well as other institutions such as the Kuala Lumpur Mediation Centre and the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF).
Beginning in 2024, he said, the Human Resource Ministry also partnered with the United States Department of Labour to further strengthen its officers' capacity in industrial mediation.
The one-day symposium on June 21 was organised by the Society of JP Community Mediators Penang (SJPCMP), in collaboration with the JP Mediation Bureau Penang and the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM).

He urged all federal and state agencies to serve local fruits at official events to show support for farmers. Local fruits such as pineapples, durians, jackfruit, and avocados have shown strong domestic and export market potential, he said. The campaign comes after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered government departments to stop using imported food at official events. Mohamad also praised the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board for raising pineapple output beyond RM1 billion and commended Sarawak's development of the Sarawak Gold 1 variety, which matures faster and is disease-resistant.

Anwar, Prabowo Agree To Boost strategic Cooperation, To jointly Develop Ambalat Area
GENERAL JAKARTA, June 27 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto have expressed the strong commitment of both countries to accelerate strategic cooperation in various fields including joint development in the maritime border area of Malaysia and Indonesia in Ambalat in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner. In a joint press conference after a bilateral meeting at Istana Merdeka here today, Anwar said both countries should consider economic cooperation including in the maritime border area that benefits the people. "If it appears that there is still a bit of a deadlock in negotiations in terms of principles, regulations and laws, then there is no obstacle for us to accelerate economic cooperation including what (Prabawo) mentioned earlier regarding the joint development authority. 'Even in the Ambalat area, if we wait to finish it, it might take another two decades. So let's take advantage of this time to get results to benefit both countries and defend the fate of our people in an area that is quite far from the border," explained Anwar. He was commenting on Prabowo's statement that both countries should speed up the resolution of technical issues related to borders and maritime. "Regarding the border issue, which technically may take time, we agreed to find a mutually beneficial solution. For example, the Ambalat region, while waiting for the legal settlement, we want to start economic cooperation through a joint-development mechanism,' said Prabowo. The two leaders also stressed their commitment to increase cooperation in the fields of research, education, culture, trade and investment in an uncertain economic environment due to the tariffs imposed by the United States. Anwar and Prabowo also agreed to hold the 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultations next month. Touching on the Myanmar issue, Anwar said Malaysia was determined to resolve the dispute amicably and was supported by Indonesia, which has experience and expertise in conflict management.

SAMENTA Welcomes Revision To Expanded SST As Relief For SMEs
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- The Small and Medium Enterprises Association Malaysia (SAMENTA) has welcomed the Ministry of Finance's (MoF) revision to the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST), describing it as a meaningful relief for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Its president, Datuk William Ng said the revision includes a higher annual sales threshold for service tax on rental and financial services, which effectively exempts approximately 75 per cent of SMEs from the additional eight per cent tax under the expanded SST. 'When the expansion of the SST was first announced, SAMENTA was among the first to voice concerns, particularly over its potential impact on our SMEs. 'We urged the government to raise the SST threshold - a move that would protect smaller enterprises while still allowing for a broader and fairer tax base,' he said in a statement today. The MoF announced today that, after carefully considering public sentiment, it has decided not to proceed with the proposed expansion of the service tax to beauty services, including manicures and pedicures, facial services, and services provided by barbers and hairdressers. The MoF stated that all revisions to the expanded Sales Tax and Service Tax were made after considering feedback from the public and industry. Ng said the association expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for hearing their concerns and directing the ministry to revise the threshold upwards. 'While we will continue to advocate for a balanced and SME-friendly approach in future tax reforms, we consider this matter concluded and will not seek further concessions on the SST expansion,' he added. He also encouraged affected SMEs to take the necessary steps to implement the expanded SST and to seek assistance from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department where needed.
