Government Mulls Raising Tobacco Tax — Anwar
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The government is considering a proposal to raise the tobacco tax rate, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the proposal aligns with the government's commitment to public health and fiscal reform, particularly given the long-standing moratorium on tobacco tax hikes.
Malaysia's tobacco tax currently accounts for 58.60 per cent of retail prices. The country has no formal mechanism for periodic adjustments or revaluation of the rate, which was last increased in September 2014.
'I'm enthusiastic. I don't smoke, and I'm anti-smoking,' he said in response to questions on whether the government may revise the tax in Budget 2026, to be tabled in October.
Anwar was speaking after attending a Budget 2026 engagement session here today.
An economist reportedly suggested raising the rate to between 60 and 75 per cent
Last week, when announcing the 13th Malaysia Plan, Anwar said the government would broaden its 'pro-health' tax beyond sugary products to also cover tobacco, vapes and alcohol.
He said the expanded tax framework aims not only to increase revenue, but more critically, to encourage behavioural change and curb the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
NCDs, commonly associated with unhealthy lifestyles, include heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer.

PLUS to test barrier-free toll system

The Works Minister said the Hutan Kampung-Sungai Dua stretch in Penang will serve as the pilot project. He said the ANPR was the first step towards implementing the Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system within the next two years, aimed at easing congestion at toll plazas. 'This system enables users to pass through any existing lane without stopping, offering smoother and more flexible journeys. 'I personally tried the system at a toll plaza and it proved to be significantly faster. 'No charges are imposed for registration, and users are free to choose any toll lane,' he said after witnessing the demonstration of the barrier-free ANPR system at Persada PLUS here yesterday, Bernama reported. Nanta said the system's development involved local experts in the highway sector and was fully carried out by the industry without any financial implications for the government. He said, as a start, the system would be tested at 13 toll plazas involving 35 lanes before being expanded in stages across the entire PLUS network. The ANPR system identifies vehicle registration numbers through cameras and allows toll payments to be made digitally and cashless. It also provides e-invoice displays, transaction checks and various other mobility services through a single integrated digital platform. Users only need to register online using their personal identification details, vehicle information and payment method. 'Once the registration number is read, the toll fare will be automatically deducted from the registered account. If the balance is insufficient, the payment will be claimed later from the vehicle owner,' said Nanta. Payments can also be made via the new JustGo application, which supports various methods, including e-wallets, bank cards and Touch 'n Go. Nanta stressed that there were no costs or charges imposed on the public to register or use the system, and they could still choose to use any existing toll lanes.

Negri is sixth top state attracting foreign tourists
NEGRI Sembilan recorded a significant increase in international tourist arrivals last year, with 460,000 visitors compared to 340,000 in 2023. State tourism, arts and culture committee chairman Nicole Tan said the increase, based on accommodation data from Tourism Malaysia, ranked Negri Sembilan sixth out of 13 states and three federal territories. 'This has made the state one of the tourist hotspots in Malaysia,' she said at the state assembly sitting in Seremban. 'Most international visitors are from Singapore, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Brunei and India.' She was replying to Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker (PN-Labu) who asked for the number of international tourist arrivals in the state, Bernama reported. Under the 'Pesona Daerah' initiative, Tan said Taman Tasik Seremban recorded 109,379 visitors including 2,901 international tourists, while Taman Malaysia received 13,607 visitors with 342 of them foreigners, and X-Park Sendayan drew 36,450 visitors including 8,450 from abroad. 'Port Dickson remains a key tourist destination in the state, with the Ornamental Fish Centre attracting 281,273 visitors including 4,882 foreign tourists. 'The Army Museum drew 200,061 visitors including 3,393 international tourists, while PD Ostrich Farm welcomed 43,800 visitors, with 8,984 from abroad, making it one of the district's popular attractions.' Tan said Jempol district too recorded a positive trend in tourist arrivals with Bukit Taisho in Bahau attracting 37,500 climbers, of whom 2,500 were foreigners. The overall number of tourist arrivals in the state reflected positive development, supported by attractions across ecotourism, cultural heritage and gastronomy segments, she added.
