
Why education will never fully align with market needs — and why that is okay
Published statistics shared during the B20 discussions across the G20 countries showed that nearly 50 percent of workers are in jobs that do not match their qualifications and by 2030, 40 percent of current core job skills are expected to change due to technological disruption. These numbers are not surprising, as all education systems — no matter how well-designed — simply cannot move at the same speed as market innovation. The labor market is a moving target. That is why agility, not alignment, must be our new north star.
In this global context, Saudi Arabia stands out as a forward-thinking model. Under Vision 2030, the Kingdom is investing heavily in human capital development. Initiatives like the Human Capability Development Program and sector-specific upskilling programs are building a resilient, future-ready workforce. These are not reactive measures; they are proactive strategies to prepare for the unknown. To stay ahead, we must rethink our entire approach to education and employment. There are several global best practices that Saudi Arabia is already beginning to implement, and these could be scaled even further.

First, we must prioritize re-skilling over initial training. Employers often hesitate to invest in training due to an unclear return on investment. If we view re-skilling as a shared responsibility — where governments reduce financial risk and businesses contribute strategically — this barrier becomes surmountable.
Another point is that we must build demand-led skilling systems. Training programs should be linked directly to labor market needs, with employers involved in curriculum design. This ensures the skills taught are immediately relevant to the business sector and adaptable.
Furthermore, we should embrace modular learning and micro-credentials. Short, certifiable learning pathways offer a faster, more flexible way to gain employment-relevant skills without relying solely on traditional degrees.
We also need to focus on closing the digital divide. In a country rapidly adopting artificial intelligence, fintech and digital transformation, we must ensure equitable access to training tools for all, including rural and underserved populations.
Finally, we need to strengthen public-private partnerships. The private sector should not be seen as a passive consumer of talent but as an active co-designer.
The evolving nature of work demands that we shift our focus from chasing perfect alignment between education and employment to fostering systems that can evolve with change. The gap between what education provides and what the market needs is not a failure; it is a permanent feature of a dynamic, innovation-driven world. Instead of aiming to eliminate this gap, we must learn to navigate it with agility, resilience, and foresight.
Saudi Arabia's strategic investments under Vision 2030 reflect an understanding of this reality. By embracing lifelong learning, building demand-responsive systems, and fostering collaboration between sectors, the Kingdom is setting a powerful example of how to future-proof its workforce. The goal is no longer to predict the future of work but to prepare people to thrive in it — no matter how it changes.

Saudi crude exports rise to 6.2m bpd: JODI
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's crude oil exports rose to 6.19 million barrels per day in May, an annual increase of 1.19 percent, according to the Joint Organizations Data Initiative. The rise was driven by increased production, which also climbed during the month, rising by 2.12 percent year on year to 9.18 million bpd. This marks a continuation of the Kingdom's phased dialling up of output as OPEC+ producers gradually unwind voluntary cuts introduced in previous years. The JODI figures come amid broader market developments in the global oil sector. Earlier this month, eight key OPEC+ producers, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the UAE, agreed to accelerate their phased output increases, announcing a larger-than-expected 548,000 bpd production hike for August. The decision, taken during a virtual meeting, reflects confidence in global economic resilience and healthy market fundamentals, according to the OPEC Secretariat. The eight-nation subset of the alliance has been gradually reversing 2.2 million bpd of voluntary production cuts separate from the bloc's formal policy, with Saudi Arabia playing a leading role. This follows earlier monthly hikes of 411,000 bpd in May, June, and July, with a new, steeper increase slated for August. Saudi Arabia's refined oil exports saw a sharper uptick, growing by 12.12 percent to reach 1.37 million bpd in May. This growth was largely driven by a 25 percent year-on-year surge in shipments of motor and aviation gasoline, which reached 325,000 bpd. Despite this increase, other major refined components recorded declines — gas diesel exports fell 2.62 percent to 594,000 bpd, while fuel oil shipments dropped 3 percent to 161,000 bpd. Gas diesel remained the dominant component of refined exports, accounting for 43 percent of the total, followed by motor and aviation fuels at 24 percent, and fuel oil at 12 percent. Refinery crude output in the Kingdom declined by 7.64 percent year on year, settling at 2.72 million bpd. Direct crude burn, the use of crude oil for domestic power generation, rose by 23 percent in May compared to the same month of 2024, reaching 48,000 bpd, according to JODI. This year-on-year increase is likely driven by a combination of factors, including the continued population growth across the Kingdom, which has expanded residential and commercial power consumption.

Saudi holdings of US Treasuries drop by $6.1B in May
Saudi Arabia's holdings of US Treasuries decreased by $6.1 billion month-on-month to $127.7 billion in May, recent data released by the US Treasury showed. Accordingly, the Kingdom maintained its 17th place among the largest holders of US Treasuries for the month. Saudi Arabia's holdings of US Treasuries were distributed among long-term bonds worth $102 billion, representing 80% of the total. Meanwhile, short-term bonds amounted to $25.8 billion, accounting for 20%. Japan was the top holder of US Treasuries by value in May, with $1.13 trillion, followed by the UK ($809.4 billion).

Madinah presents SDG progress at UN in New York
RIYADH: The Madinah Region Development Authority participated in the main session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the UN headquarters in New York, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday. In the session, titled 'Transformation from the Ground Up: Acting at Local Level,' the authority highlighted Madinah's pioneering role and the Kingdom's leadership in localizing the Sustainable Development Goals. Abdulrahman Ibrahim, the authority's chief data and innovation officer, said Madinah had become a model for international best practices. Key initiatives include the 2023 Madinah City Voluntary Local Review — the first in the Kingdom and second in the Arab region; the 2024 State of Sustainable Development Report for Madinah Region — the first Voluntary Subnational Review in the Arab region; and the launch of the Atlas of Sustainable Development in Madinah City Neighborhoods, a global first for precise, neighborhood-level SDG assessment. The session also reviewed successful local and regional approaches to accelerating sustainable SDG solutions, discussing key enablers and opportunities to expand local action. The authority's participation, part of the Saudi delegation led by Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Alibrahim, underscores the Kingdom's commitment to sustainable development aligned with Vision 2030. The UN forum, running through to July 23, also featured dialogue sessions on global frameworks for resilient urban development and strategies to create value for cities through data-driven trends.
