Australians caught up in new ‘infinite workday' trend

Advancements in technology have been heralded as a game changer when it comes to flexible working.
Forgot to respond to an important email? No need to trudge back to the office to log onto your computer, you can just do it from your phone.
What once would have required an in person meeting is now a Zoom call and the rise of remote work means employees are saving countless hours each week they would have otherwise spent commuting.
While there is no doubt all of these things have had a positive impact when it comes to the way people work, we are now starting to see the flexibility scales tip so far that it is actually having a negative impact on work-life balance.
Being able to send of a quick email after hours has turned into scrolling through your inbox as soon as you wake up.
Having access to virtual meetings now means being asked to jump on a call at 8pm and being able to work from anywhere has turned into being expected to work at any time.
This phenomenon has been dubbed the 'infinite workday', with Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index Annual Report revealing just how widespread it has become.
An analysis of data from users of Microsoft 365 services found a series of disturbing changes in the way people are working around the world.
In describing the chaos of the seemingly infinite workday trend, the report noted that 'it starts early, mostly in email, and quickly swells to a focus-sapping flood of messages, meetings, and interruptions'.
A whopping 40 per cent of users who are online at 6am are reviewing emails, with the average worker receiving 117 emails a day, the report found.
By 8am, Microsoft Teams overtakes email as the dominant communication channel, with the average worker receiving 153 Teams messages a day, a 6 per cent year on year increase globally.
Microsoft found that, during a standard eight-hour shift, the average worker is interrupted every two minutes by either an email, chat notification or meeting, adding up to 275 times a day.
Speaking to news.com.au, Bryan Stallings, Chief Evangelist at Lucid Software, said, if left unchecked, this type of fragmentation will have a severe impact on workplaces across Australia and the rest of the world.
'The consequences of this systemic chaos are taking a toll on Australian workers,' Mr Stallings said.
'Left unchecked, this 'infinite workday' won't boost output. Instead, it leads to disengaged employees, crippling innovation due to a dwindling capacity for deep work, and a workforce unable to truly adapt at 'the speed of business', as research warns.
'This unsustainable model demands a fundamental shift towards intentional design that moves away from accidental chaos and towards visual clarity in how we work.'
With employees receiving all these interruptions during the standard work day, you might be wondering, when does this leave time for any actual work to be done? The answer is, it doesn't.
Which is why an increasing number of employees are logging back on at night so they can focus on their work without being interrupted.
Microsoft found that, for remote workers, they often see evening hours as a productive window to catch up on work, but hybrid workers are more likely to experience that same time as a source of stress.
The research found that meetings after 8pm are up 16 per cent year on year and the average employee now recited more than 50 messages outside of core business hours,
By 10pm, 29 per cent of active workers are back in their inboxes trying to get on top of the influx of emails.
Work is also spilling over into the weekend, with the data showing almost 20 per cent of employees actively working on the weekend are checking their email before noon on Saturday and Sunday.
It is clear that boundaries are quickly eroding, with one in three employees saying the pace of work over the past five years makes it impossible to keep up.
'This points to a larger truth: the modern workday for many has no clear start or finish,' the report states.
'As business demands grow more complex and expectations continue to rise, time once reserved for focus or recovery may now be spent catching up, prepping, and chasing clarity.'
Ending the infinite workday isn't just about individual workers putting boundaries in place to protect their work-life balance.
While its vital to have personal limits, Mr Stallings pointed out they are often 'rendered ineffective by broken systems', with the primary responsibility of addressing these issues lying with executive leadership.
He said that senior management must shift focus from where work gets done to how it gets done.
Recent research from Lucid has revealed the systematic roadblocks facing Australian employers, with 35 per cent citing a lack of standardisation and 34 per cent pointing to insufficient automation.
The data showed that only 31 per cent of Australians have been trained on effective hybrid collaboration, leaving room for communication breakdown.
'Expecting Aussies to set boundaries in a chaotic system without executive leadership's intentional design also erodes psychological safety,' Mr Stallings said.
'Often, management talks about a sustainable pace while inadvertently rewarding 'hero' behaviours that undermine work-life balance, sending deeply conflicting signals.'
The Microsoft research points to artificial intelligence as one of the tools that can be used to help redesign the rhythm of work and give people their time back.
However, when it comes to Aussie workplaces, there is a still a major literacy gap when it comes to using AI effectively.
Kade Brown, Workforce Solutions Director at RMIT Online, told news.com.au that, because of the rapid pace of AI advancement outstripping traditional education, many Australians are missing the skills needed to confidently prompt, apply and evaluate using AI tools at work.
'AI offers powerful opportunities to boost productivity by streamlining repetitive tasks and freeing up individuals for more strategic, creative work,' he said.
'We need to use AI intentionally, set healthy boundaries, and ensure it enhances (not replaces) human judgment.'
In order to thrive in the evolving AI landscape, Mr Brown said people need to embrace a lifelong learning mindset.
PwC has estimated AI will contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, with Mr Brown noting that, for those ready to adapt, the 'potential for transformation is enormous'.
'For the individual, staying curious, continuously upskilling, and building digital confidence are now essential,' he said.
'Businesses that invest in training, particularly in areas like AI literacy, won't just keep pace, they'll lead.'

An additional 25-percent tariff on Indian goods, set to come into place in three weeks, stacks atop a separate 25-percent duty entering into force Thursday, taking the level to 50 percent for many products. Trump's order also threatens penalties on other countries who "directly or indirectly" import Russian oil, a key revenue source for Moscow's war in Ukraine. Exemptions remain however for goods targeted under sector-specific duties such as steel and aluminum, and categories that could be hit later, like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. Smartphones are among this list of exempted products for now, notably shielding Apple from a major hit as the US tech titan shifts production from China to India. India's foreign ministry condemned Trump's tariff announcement Wednesday, calling the move "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable." The ministry previously said India began importing oil from Russia as traditional supplies were diverted to Europe over the war -- noting that Washington had "actively encouraged" such imports to strengthen "global energy market stability." But Trump recently raised pressure on India over the oil purchases, threatening new tariffs as part of a campaign to force Moscow into ending its devastating invasion of Ukraine. India's national security adviser was in Moscow on Wednesday, media in New Delhi reported, coinciding with US envoy Steve Witkoff's visit. The 25-percent additional tariff is notably lower than a 100-percent level Trump floated last month when he told Russia to end the war in Ukraine within 50 days or face massive new economic sanctions. The Republican said at the time that these would be "secondary tariffs" targeting Russia's remaining trade partners, seeking to impede Moscow's ability to survive already sweeping Western sanctions. "This marks a low point in US-India relations," said Farwa Aamer, the Asia Society Policy Institute's director of South Asia Initiatives. She expects domestic pressure for India to accede to US demands, but said "this will be a tough road to navigate." - Tariff turmoil - Trump has also separately taken aim at Brazil over the trial of his right-wing ally, former president Jair Bolsonaro -- who is accused of planning a coup. US tariffs on various Brazilian goods surged from 10 percent to 50 percent Wednesday, although broad exemptions including for orange juice and civil aircraft are expected to soften the blow. Come Thursday, a new wave of tariffs impacting dozens of other economies, from the European Union to Taiwan, is set to kick in. These updated "reciprocal" tariffs, meant to address trade practices Washington deems unfair, go up to 41 percent for Syria. Major US trading partners face varying increases from a current 10-percent level, starting at 15 percent for economies like the EU, Japan and South Korea. Countries not targeted by these "reciprocal" tariff hikes continue facing a 10-percent levy Trump imposed in April. Trump's plans have sparked a rush to avert the steeper duties, with Switzerland's President Karin Keller-Sutter hurrying to Washington ahead of the Thursday deadline. Though she secured a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, it was unclear if she would meet Trump or any top economic officials. Her Alpine country faces a 39-percent duty on many exports. Donald Trump has imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports as a punishment for the country importing Russian oil, which is a key revenue maker for Moscow's war in Ukraine. What workplace AI is secretly recording in your meetings

Tiffany N. Lewis was worried she was being duped. A potential client had reached out about working with her digital marketing agency on a pro-bono basis, but his message went straight to spam. Then he blew off several scheduled meetings with Lewis. Was he a fraud? When the client asked her to meet again, Lewis added him to a call she was already on with her assistant. Before he joined, Lewis joked: 'Is he, like, a Nigerian prince?' Despite the scammy red flags, he turned out to be a legitimate person. Lewis was relieved – until she realised her new client had received a full summary of the call in his inbox, including her 'Nigerian prince' remark. She was running an AI notetaker the whole time. 'I was very lucky that the person I was working with had a good sense of humour,' said Lewis, who lives in Stow, Ohio. AI is listening in on your work meetings – including the parts you don't want anyone to hear. Before attendees file in, or when one colleague asks another to hang back to discuss a separate matter, AI notetakers may pick up on the small talk and private discussions meant for a select audience, then blast direct quotes to everyone in the meeting. Nicole and Tim Delger run a Nashville branding firm called Studio Delger. After one business meeting late last year, the couple received a summary from Zoom's AI assistant that was decidedly not work-related. 'Studio discussed the possibility of getting sandwich ingredients from Publix,' one bullet point said. Another key takeaway: 'Don't like soup.' Their client never showed up to the meeting, and the studio had spent the time talking about what to make for lunch. 'That was the first time it had caught a private conversation,' Nicole said. Fortunately the summary didn't go to the client. Andrea Serra, an account-strategy co-ordinator at a communications agency, has experienced this first-hand. In one transcript, an AI notetaker caught her describing her frustration with the new Whole Foods store in her neighbourhood; though she'd set her preferences so that notes go to the host only, she shared the email with two other people on the call for laughs. Another meeting recap featured bullets of her discussing almost burning down her kitchen while trying to make a new sweet potato recipe. 'It'll be like all of our action steps, all the strategy we discussed during the meeting, and then randomly in there, something about our personal lives that we had talked about last week and wanted to catch up on this week as well,' Serra said. 'Just one little sentence as a surprise in there.' Though her boss, Debora Lima, had hoped the AI summaries would reduce work for the team, she's still waiting for the technology to improve. Meanwhile, she and her colleagues have embraced them as comic relief. As she was looking over notes from a meeting she recently hosted, she noticed the phrase 'hey cutie pie' in the transcript. Lima said there should be a company-wide Slack channel to archive the funniest examples. Notetakers can do a variety of tasks, from recording and transcribing calls, generating action items for teams and recapping what's already been said to anyone joining late. Many signal to attendees that a meeting is being recorded and transcribed. Zoom's AI Companion, which generated more than 7.2 million meeting summaries by the end of January 2024, flashes a dialogue box at the top of the screen to let participants know when it's turned on. As long as it's active, an AI Companion diamond icon continues to flash in the top right corner of the meeting. People can also ask the host to stop using the AI Companion. 'We want users to feel they're really in control,' said Smita Hashim, chief product officer at Zoom. Google's AI notetaker functions similarly, where only meeting hosts or employees of the host organisation have the ability to turn it on or off. When it's on, people will see a notification and hear an audio cue, and a blue pencil icon will appear in the top right corner. 'We put a lot of care into making sure meeting participants know exactly if and when AI tools in Meet are being used,' said Awaneesh Verma, senior director of product management and real time communications at Google Workspace. The automatic summaries can be informative and timesaving, or unintentionally hilarious. Kelsey Ogletree, chief executive of a tech platform for media professionals, received a Zoom AI summary, titled 'Monty's Messy Morning', describing how her dog, Monty, ate leftover food on the counter and threw up in the house. It went on to say that 'Kelsey was disgusted by the incident and considered washing Monty's head with Dawn dish soap.' It was a conversation between her and her husband, who's also her business partner. (And Monty is a cat, not a dog.) John Barentine, an astronomer and consultant in Tucson, Arizona, doesn't use AI notetakers but has been on plenty of calls with them. He was most recently surprised by the AI summary of one call that was sent to him, summarising the small talk at the beginning of the call. It said: 'John Barentine humorously notes that there is a lethal dose of water for humans.' Mr Barentine said he was discussing the devastating Texas floods with a client; the AI had completely misunderstood the context. He says he's now more likely to use the private chat feature in meetings instead of saying something aloud while AI is listening. 'At least I know that if I make a remark to somebody privately for now, that's not being swept up by the AI notetaker,' he said.
