Sewage leak cancels Riviera on Vaal parkrun — again

The Citizen2 days ago
VEREENIGING – After weeks of cancellations due to sewage spills, the Riviera on Vaal parkrun briefly resumed on June 28.
However, organisers have now been forced to cancel the event again as raw sewage has returned to the course.
'It is with great sadness and frustration that we once again have to cancel the Riviera on Vaal parkrun on July 5, due to sewage spills on the course. Please note that the relevant authorities have been notified of the situation. We apologise profoundly,' the organisers announced on their Facebook page.
Parkrun director Linda Bosch explained the source of the current leak.
'The sewage leak is back, and it is emanating from a double-storey house in Golf Road. It is leaking again. We phoned Metsi-a-Lekoa, Emfuleni Local Municipality's water and sanitation department, yesterday. At our start area, the sewage water has piled up again. We need immediate action,' Bosch said.
The repeated cancellations highlight ongoing challenges with sewage management in the area, affecting the safety and enjoyment of the popular community event.

UPDATE: Death toll in the Lady Mo accident in Mbombela rises to three The death toll in the head-on collision that claimed the life of beloved Mbombela social media influencer Moses Sibiya, affectionately known as 'Lady Mo', has risen to three. The accident involved a Kia Picanto and a minibus taxi on the KaNyamazane Road near MRTT in Mbombela on Friday, July 4. Lowvelder previously published that Lady Mo was driving the Kia and was pronounced dead on the scene. However, the paper has since been reliably informed that he was among the five passengers of the Kia who were injured and taken to hospital. The taxi driver also sustained critical injuries, while the Kia's driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on the scene. Lady Mo and another unidentified victim succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison's spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, confirmed the new information on Sunday, July 6. Footage of the tragic accident is circulating on social media. The video, which Lowvelder has opted not to publish due to its graphic nature, shows the Kia Picanto skidding into the oncoming lane before colliding head-on with the taxi. Everybody loved him especially when he sang at funerals. He had this rare talent of capturing everyone's attention, especially when given the platform to be the MC for funerals and other functions,' said one of Lady Mo's followers, Ntoko Nkambule, from Pienaar. Other tributes came all the way from the Kingdom of eSwatini, further confirming Sibiya's influential abilities. People from Mataffin near the Mbombela Stadium also hailed Lady Mo as a great man. He had his own style of doing things. He was not shy about what he did, and we all loved him. I think his funeral will be very big,' said one Mataffin resident, Joseph Magagula. Lady Mo's fame hailed from one of his live videos that went viral. 'He became everyone's darling from the day his video went viral. It was of him singing at a funeral. Ever since then, he has been booked for many funerals,' said Precious Mathebula from Pienaar. The dates for Lady Mo's memorial and funeral services have not yet been announced. Watch: ‘Beggar' kicks bread donation across road in Krugersdorp

A video showing a man, who was begging at an intersection in Krugersdorp, kicking a loaf of bread and eventually tossing it into a dustbin at the intersection of Paardekraal Drive and Voortrekker Road (near a well-known shopping centre) has gone viral. Captured by a motorist's dashcam, the footage shows the man sitting underneath a blanket on a traffic island. Shortly after accepting bread from someone, the man shrugs off his blanket before angrily kicking the food across the road multiple times. He then throws it into a nearby bin. Watch the video here: Homelessness and beggars are rife in Krugersdorp and the greater West Rand. Beggars are a familiar sight on nearly every street corner and so common that their absence is often more noticeable than their presence. The open hands and familiar 'I'm hungry, please help' gestures have become part of the everyday landscape. The community has since expressed outrage at the man's apparent disregard for the food given to him. Community members questioned when to help others and, with many residents struggling, how to know who actually needs and appreciates help.
