Watch: ‘Beggar' kicks bread donation across road in Krugersdorp
Captured by a motorist's dashcam, the footage shows the man sitting underneath a blanket on a traffic island. Shortly after accepting bread from someone, the man shrugs off his blanket before angrily kicking the food across the road multiple times. He then throws it into a nearby bin.

Homelessness and beggars are rife in Krugersdorp and the greater West Rand. Beggars are a familiar sight on nearly every street corner and so common that their absence is often more noticeable than their presence. The open hands and familiar 'I'm hungry, please help' gestures have become part of the everyday landscape.
The community has since expressed outrage at the man's apparent disregard for the food given to him.
Community members questioned when to help others and, with many residents struggling, how to know who actually needs and appreciates help.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court on Friday, 5 July 2025, sentenced 37-year-old Sibusiso Ncengwa to an effective 25 years in prison for the murder of former ANC Youth League Secretary General Sindiso Magaqa and several related crimes. Ncengwa pleaded guilty under Section 220 of the Criminal Procedure Act on 6 June 2025, admitting to shooting Magaqa in uMzimkhulu on 13 July 2017. He also confessed to attempting to kill Jabulile Msiya, Nonsikelelo Mafa, and Nceba Mazongolo, damaging vehicles and unlawfully possessing firearms and ammunition. In his admissions, Ncengwa outlined the events leading to Magaqa's murder and named his co-accused Sbonelo Myeza, Mlungisi Ncalane and Mbulelo Mpofana. He also revealed the names of the alleged masterminds who planned the assassination. During sentencing, Advocate Elvis Gcweka presented victim impact statements from Magaqa's brother and a KwaZulu-Natal ANC member. Magaqa's brother described him as a community leader who had established a soccer team for local youth and was his family's breadwinner. The ANC statement described Magaqa's death as a loss to the organisation. The court sentenced Ncengwa to 25 years for conspiracy to commit murder and another 25 years for murder. He also received five years' imprisonment for each of the three counts of attempted murder. Three years for each of the three counts of malicious injury to property. For the firearm-related offences, the court sentenced him to five years for unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm. Another five years for unlawful possession of a firearm, and one year for unlawful possession of ammunition. The court ordered that these sentences run concurrently, resulting in an effective prison term of 25 years. KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Elaine Harrison welcomed the conviction and praised law enforcement partners, especially the Political Killings Task Team. Pietermaritzburg child (5) drowns in residential pool
Less than a minute Akheel Sewsunker Less than a minute A five-year-old has died after drowning in a pool at a home on Howick Road in Athlone, Pietermaritzburg, on Monday. According to Mi7 National Group, the incident happened just after 13:00, The Witness reports. 'Upon arrival, paramedics found that a five-year-old child had drowned in a residential swimming pool. Neighbours and the child's parents were performing CPR at the scene,' said Mi7. Mi7 added that medics immediately took over advanced resuscitation efforts, but despite their best attempts, the child had already died. NGO bans in Burkina Faso: Power move or sovereignty defence?
Burkina Faso's military government shut down four foreign non-governmental organisations' licences on 4 July 2025. Due to alleged data breaches, two foreign associations received three-month suspensions. Authorities only made the decrees public in early July 2025, despite issuing them in mid-June, according to AFP. Rather than enhancing civic regulation in the public eye, the enforcement appears to reflect the junta's broader efforts to suppress opposition and consolidate power over civil society. Under Captain Ibrahim Traoré's direction, the junta claims that the actions will restore national sovereignty. Authorities argue that foreign organisations undermine domestic efforts to combat terrorist insurgencies. In addition, armed groups linked to Niger and Mali continue to inflict violence on Burkina Faso. The government has removed diplomats accused of participating in subversive activities in recent months. Despite increased military operations and international assistance initiatives, security remains precarious. Burkina Faso has shut down several foreign media outlets due to their negative coverage. Furthermore, the government banned Voice of America and BBC/Africa from broadcasting after Human Rights Watch (HRW) published its report. The HRW published its report on the February 2024 massacres in April 2024, calling on the transitional government of Burkina Faso to look into the army's alleged execution of at least 223 civilians in Nondin and Soro, including 56 children.
