7 former Alabama players to be featured in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS, La. (WIAT) — Super Bowl LIX will kickoff Sunday between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, and the Alabama Crimson Tide will be well represented.
The 59th Super Bowl will feature seven former Crimson Tide players. Kansas City doesn't have any former Alabama players while the Eagles feature Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith, Eli Ricks, Landon Dickerson, Byron Young, Cameron Latu, and Tyler Steen.
Hurts was the first freshman to start at quarterback in Nick Saban's career. He led the Crimson Tide to the 2016-17 national championship game where the Crimson Tide lost to Clemson. Following his junior season in 2018, he transferred to Oklahoma. He was selected with the 53rd pick in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Smith is arguably the best wide receiver to ever put on an Alabama jersey. His historic 2020 campaign which ended with 1,856 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns earned him the Heisman trophy and led Alabama to a national championship win over Ohio State. He was selected with the 10th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Ricks transferred to the Capstone after two seasons at LSU. He appeared in 10 games, recording 13 tackles and four pass breakups.
Dickerson spent three years at Florida State before transferring to Alabama. He was apart of the 2020 national championship team and won the Rimington Trophy, which is presented to the best center in the country. He was also a first-team All-American. He was selected with the 37th pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Young spent four seasons at Alabama as a defensive tackle. He finished his Alabama career with 132 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He was selected with the 70th pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Latu spent five seasons at Alabama and played a major role in his final two seasons. He finished his Crimson Tide career with 787 yards and 12 touchdowns. In 2021, he surpassed Irv Smith Jr's. record of touchdown passes by a tight end with eight. He was selected with the 101st pick of the third round in the 2023 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
Steen arrived to Alabama in 2022 after four season at Vanderbilt. He started all 13 games at left tackles and earned second team All-SEC recognition from coaches. He was drafted with the 65th pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Super Bowl LIX will mark the second time in three years the two teams have played each other. Kick off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on FOX.

Barkley was drafted second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants and was instantly an electric playmaker in the NFL. He carried the Giants when needed, but because he had such a high workload, he dealt with many injuries near the end of his tenure in New York. Advertisement The Eagles have much more on offense for every team to account for on defense, with Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown being one of the best quarterback-to-wide receiver duos in the NFL. That allows Barkley to have much less pressure on him, and it led to his best season he's ever had, and it led to a Super Bowl ring. If his 2024 is any indication, Barkley still has plenty left in the tank in his NFL career. However, his comments on wanting to retire are concerning because it might happen out of the blue for fans. Still, with his career rejuvenated, Eagles fans should enjoy him while they have him. You know, there was multiple things discussed throughout the meeting, and it was really cool to witness how this process takes place. The owners back and forth over the proposals, things that passed, things that got tabled, things that didn't pass. At the end of the day, it was just awesome to witness and to see how serious each one of these owners take each one of these decisions.' Asked by his brother, Travis Kelce, about what happened behind closed doors, Jason wasn't willing to spill the Tush Push beans, noting instead that it was a very good experience.
