‘Standing shoulder to shoulder with the government': Congress lauds Operation Sindoor

Indian Express07-05-2025

We are standing shoulder to shoulder with the government,' said Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Shaktisinh Gohil Wednesday while lauding the Indian Armed Forces for carrying out the missile strikes on nine terror targets, under Operation Sindoor, as a response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Gohil said that the Congress and all opposition parties were 'standing shoulder to shoulder with the government' to thwart enemies 'attempting to break the morale by using terrorism'.
In a video message posted on Instagram, Gohil congratulated and hailed the Indian Army and said, 'Our soldiers protect the country at the cost of their lives. Their passion is so firm that no matter what the enemy does, the country's army gives an apt reply'.
'We pray to God that the brave soldiers of our country should be blessed and protected to fight the enemy. The strength will come from God's blessings… Those who do not have the courage to fight us straight from the front, use terrorists to attack and break the morale. But our army will deal with them,' he said.
Stating that the opposition was with the government on the issue, Gohil said, 'The Congress party, in the national interest, had told the government to take strong steps after the Pahalgam attack and that there would be no politics over this'.
'The Congress party and the opposition parties are standing with the government shoulder to shoulder. Our army will continue to give apt responses to the enemies such that no one will dare to commit such crimes against the country,' he added.
Earlier, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had also taken to X to post about Operation Sindoor while Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi put out a series of posts on X about the operation. Gujarat Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary also posted a message stating that the operation was 'Zero Tolerance to Terror' while MP from Porbandar and Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya said, 'The haven of terrorists has been reduced to dust.'

'World now knows the truth': Shashi Tharoor-led delegation on Operation Sindoor wraps up US visit

The all-party delegation on Operation Sindoor, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, wrapped up the last leg of its multi-nation tour in the United States after meeting Vice President JD Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. The delegation arrived in the US on June 3 for a three-day visit. It held meetings on Capitol Hill and in Washington and briefed American officials and leaders about India's Operation Sindoor and the nation's stance on cross-border terrorism. Before the US, the Tharoor-led delegation visited Panama, Guyana, Colombia, and Brazil. The group includes Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), Tejasvi Surya (BJP), Gants Harish Madhur Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), and India's former Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Sandhu. In a post on X late on Sunday, Shashi Tharoor wrote in Hindi, "If you are born a hundred times, you will do it a hundred times; I will love my country with all my heart; Whatever we could do, we did it "A Watan"; The whole world now knows the truth." "On behalf of all the member, I express gratitude to the motherland and the lovers of India in the country and abroad who listened with open ears and accepted with open heart that we are lovers of non-violence but only until Hind!" he added. The Tharoor-led group met Vice President Vance, Landau, House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) leadership, India Caucus leadership and Senate Foreign Relations Committee leaders. The meeting with Vance, which was held at the White House for about 25 minutes on Thursday, was described as an excellent meeting" by Shashi Tharoor. He said that Vance was "warm and welcoming and receptive". 'Vance expressed complete understanding, first of all, outrage of what happened in Pahalgam and support and respect for India's restrained response in Operation Sindoor,' Tharoor told news agency PTI after the meeting. Following the delegation's meeting with Landau on Friday, State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement that the Deputy Secretary of State "reaffirmed the United States' strong support of India in the fight against terrorism and the strategic partnership between the two countries". 'We discussed the US-India strategic relationship, including expanding trade and commercial ties to foster growth and prosperity for both countries,' Landau said. The Indian Embassy said in a statement that during the meeting with Landau, the Tharoor-led delegation explained to him India's stance against terrorism, with Operation Sindoor being launched in response to the brutal April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. On its last day of the scheduled meetings, the delegation also paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at this statue outside the Indian Embassy in Washington. Afterwards, Tharoor posted on X, "It is striking how many world capitals are adorned with statues or busts of the Mahatma, the 20th century's greatest apostle of peace, nonviolence, and human freedom." The Indian government launched the initiative of sending seven delegations, with members cutting across party lines, to travel to 32 countries and the EU headquarters in Brussels. The goal of this global outreach program is to put forth India's resolve to tackle terrorism against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor. The Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 and carried out targeted strikes at nine terror infrastructures linked to outfits such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, etc., in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was launched in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Baisaran near Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. During Operation Sindoor, more than 100 terrorists were killed. Following Operation Sindoor, Pakistan attempted to launch a retaliatory military action, with cross-border shelling, unarmed aerial vehicles, and drones across J&K, and border regions. However, most of these attacks were thwarted by the Indian armed forces and the nation's air defence system. After four days of intense cross-border fighting, India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire understanding on May 10.

Congress party's picks for vacant legislative council seats could kick off another row with governor

Bengaluru: Congress, after much thought and deliberation, is believed to have chosen KPCC media cell chairman Ramesh Babu, its NRI cell chief Arthi Krishna, party functionary DG Sagar and former media adviser to chief minister Siddaramaiah, Dinesh Amin Mattu, to fill four seats in the legislative council that have been lying vacant for more than six months. Authorities said the govt was supposed to send the list on Friday, but it delayed the process since governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot was not in station. With two general holidays intervening, the list is expected to be sent to Raj Bhavan soon. The question though is whether Gehlot would ratify the names because of Article 171 of the Constitution. This canon clearly bars nomination of career politicians, and it had left Congress in a bind. These nominated seats are reserved for eminent personalities from fields such as literature, art, culture, sports and science. The names were eventually finalised after extensive consultations between Siddaramaiah and the party high command. Besides the four, Congress had also considered party vice-president BL Shankar and Agha Sultan Khan, another functionary, but the party is said to have decided against them. Since the "selected candidates" have largely political backgrounds, it has already raised eyebrows and may invite legal challenges. Council chairman Basavaraj Horatti had written to Siddaramaiah, urging him to "follow the Constitution", especially Section 171(3), and pointedly told the govt to avoid political appointees. "The legislative council is regarded as the House of Elders where proposed legislation and policies are debated from academic perspectives," said Horatti. "Nominated members, especially, must be from non-political backgrounds. I had requested the CM in my letter to comply with the spirit of the Constitution." Past precedent supports his stand. In 2003, governor TN Chaturvedi rejected Congress govt's proposal to nominate career politician Bandeppa Kashempur. Instead, writer Chandrashekhar Kambara was appointed. In 2010, governor HR Bhardwaj blocked the nomination of V Somanna. More recently, in 2020, governor Vajubhai Vala refused to nominate AH Vishwanath, though he was later accommodated citing his authorship of a few books. Even Shankar, whose name is said to have been eventually dropped, acknowledged the dilemma. "Social workers qualify for nominated seats, but it is a thin line between social service and active politics," said Shankar. "It is better to disqualify those active in electoral politics for nominated seats." However, his supporters argue he has cultural credentials, having led Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat and authored books. With ties between the govt and governor Gehlot frosty at best — especially after he permitted Siddaramaiah to be investigated for alleged wrongdoing in the Muda case —Raj Bhavan's response will be watched with bated breath. Gehlot is said to be consulting constitutional experts after Horatti's letter. The larger concern, voiced by stakeholders and intelligentsia, is that the council should not be reduced to a rehabilitation centre for party loyalists.

Prashant Kishor is pure businessman, he is here to cheat people: JD(U) MLC Sanjay Singh

Patna (Bihar) [India], June 8 (ANI): JD(U) MLC Sanjay Singh on Sunday criticised Prashant Kishor, founder of Jan Suraaj, calling him a 'pure businessman' who aims to cheat people. Singh accused Kishor of being opportunistic, questioning his credibility and motives and pointed out that Uday Singh, appointed by Kishor as the national president of Jan Suraaj, comes from a political family, contradicting Kishor's stance against dynasty politics. 'Founder of Jan Suraaj, Prashant Kishor is a pure businessman. He is here to cheat people. If we talk about dynasty, the national president he has made, Uday Singh, he also comes from a political family,' Sanjay Singh told ANI. Singh challenged Kishor's assertion that he played a crucial role in Nitish Kumar's 2015 victory, asking where Kishor was from 2005 to 2015 and mocked Kishor's association with Congress, saying he 'held the 'khaat rally' and left the Congress on the 'ghaat',' implying that Kishor's efforts did not yield significant results. 'The CM gave him so much respect, and he says that because of him, Nitish Kumar won in 2015. Where was he from 2005-2015? In 2017, he went to UP, and Congress got 114 seats, and won 7 seats under him. He held the 'khaat rally' and left the Congress on the 'ghaat'. Nobody can form a party from the money and come to power,' he added. He further alleged that his main aim is to convert black money to white money. 'Nitish Kumar brought him and made him chairman. He wanted to become Deputy CM. There is no one so ambitious as Prashant Kishor,' he added. Earlier Prashant Kishor hit out at former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav on June 5, saying that while Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief has aspirations for his son, Tejaswhi Yadav to be 'King of Bihar', who did not pass class 9, the children of common people are not getting jobs despite completing graduation. Taking a swipe at the RJD chief, he said that he is only praising Lalu Yadav, and people should learn how to take care of their children from him. 'We need to learn from Lalu Prasad Yadav how to worry about children. Lalu ji's son did not pass the 9th class, but Lalu Yadav is so worried about his child that he still wants him to become the king of Bihar. When we say this, people say that we complain about him. No! We are praising Lalu Yadav,' Kishor said while addressing a public gathering in Bihar's Saran on Wednesday. Kishor is in Saran as part of the 'Bihar Badlav Yatra' (Journey for change in Bihar). He further said, 'You look at your condition. Your child has passed matriculation and graduated, but he is still not getting a job, even as a peon.' Earlier on June 4, during a rally at Taraiya area in Saran, Kishor said that the strong response to his rallies shows the public's shared frustration regarding corruption, which plagues Bihar, and reflects a collective desire for change. 'It's not my personal graph that's rising -- it's the growing aspiration of the people who want to see real change in Bihar. These people gathered here are not my relatives, nor are they from my caste. They come from diverse sections of society. But what unites them is a shared frustration -- everyone is fed up with the corruption that plagues Bihar. There is a collective desire for change,' Kishor told reporters. Bihar elections are expected to be held later this year in October or November, however, no official date has been announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI). (ANI)
