
Mark Smyth: How to save the young generation from mounting debt as buy now, pay later booms
Up against cost-of-living pressures, Gen Z and millennials are, concerningly, leaning heavily on low-cost credit models to support their spending. Where previous generations may have put something on lay-by, Gen Z buys now, pays later.
In fact, 57 per cent of Gen Z and millennials report having used a buy now, pay later provider in 2024 — a 20 per cent surge for Gen Z from 2020, according to comparison site Finder.
Their research also identified that 38 per cent of Gen Z and Gen Y admit to spending more than they earn, compared to 20 per cent of Boomers.
At P&N Bank we see around one in 10 customers use post-pay services, with Gen Z some of the highest users.
It can be really daunting to try and guide the young people in your life about how and when to spend their money, particularly when younger generations are spending in such different ways to other generations.
When used appropriately, buy now, pay later services can help with managing payments through smaller amounts more often, rather than a larger lump sum.
But hitting the sales using buy now, pay later can very quickly spiral into a daunting debt burden with devastating consequences over the long term.
Failed payments attract a fee, digging an even deeper hole to climb out of. Late payments or accrued debt may be recorded on a person's credit score or even reported to a debt collector, impacting their ability to borrow money in the future.
According to the Australian Finance Industry Association, Australians spent about $22.9 billion through buy now, pay later services in the 2023 financial year, with credit reporting agency Equifax determining roughly 5 per cent of 18 to 24-year-old buy now, pay later users were in arrears, potentially making it harder for them to buy homes down the track.
So, how can we guide and support the young adults in our lives as best we can?
It starts with a simple conversation before they hit 'complete purchase' on their next buy now, pay later item.
You could ask them if they use buy now, pay later services, and if so, would they consider other payment methods first? Encourage them to use lay-by and pre-pay in instalments, so they are paying off their items before they have them in their hands.
Ask if they understand the impact paying off another debt will have on their household budget — already strained budgets can fall apart under the weight of added debt.
And importantly, get them to ask themselves, can they really afford it?
If they must use post-pay options, make sure they have some tools up their sleeve to stay on top of their payment obligations, like paying ahead of time voluntarily, using a debit card, not a credit card and sticking to a budget.
If they're already struggling with mounting buy now, pay later debts, they may consider debt consolidation — whether it's too many loans or losing track of repayments, simplifying them into one fixed personal loan could help lower overall fees and reduce interest charges. Their bank can help them with this.
Thankfully there's new regulations that have just taken effect and will act as guard rails for users of buy now, pay later services. But not even the strongest regulations can take the place of guidance from a trusted person.

Cost of living pressures forcing one in four Aussies to put off essential car check-ups, new Finder research reveals
Stringent cost of living pressures are taking their toll as drivers put off critical vehicle maintenance in a threat to those on the road. This is the revelation from a fresh survey by comparison site Finder where almost one in four respondents - equivalent to about 4.8 million drivers - said they have avoided taking their car in for a check-up. It comes as budgetary constraints have forced vehicle maintenance down many Aussies' list of fiscal priorities. The report also showed about 30 per cent of female respondents had put off a check-up compared to about 18 per cent of men. Finder's insurance expert Taylor Blackburn said these cost of living pressures could ultimately make roads unsafe as the conditions of many vehicles worsen. 'Given the soaring cost of living, many households are finding it harder to prioritise car maintenance,' Mr Blackburn said. 'We're seeing a growing number of vehicles fall into disrepair simply because drivers can't afford to keep them in good condition. 'The danger is real – worn-out cars can quickly become unsafe, putting not just drivers, but everyone on the road at serious risk.' Car maintenance costs are amongst the largest household expenses after housing costs, Mr Blackburn said. It comes as rising insurance and fuel have also added to car maintenance costs, alongside the price of a routine check-up. 'Ignoring minor car troubles, like a cracked hose or a dirty filter, might seem like a way to save money now, but these cheap fixes can quickly escalate into expensive repairs if left unaddressed,' he said. Finder's analysis showed the average car owner pays about $1362 per year for car insurance. The comparison site said Aussies could reduce expenses by cutting back on driving, staying on top of maintenance, seeking out cheaper fuel, reassessing insurance and driving more fuel efficiently. The recent survey from Finder comes as the comparison site revealed millions of Aussies do not believe they have will have enough superannuation to comfortably retire. It showed that 20 per cent of Aussies - equivalent to 4.3 million Aussies - do not believe they will have enough in their super to "get by" in retirement. Another 10 per cent said their super balance would be too low but would have enough in other investments by the time they retire.

Huda Beauty founder Huda Kattan's anti-Israel conspiracy theory video removed by TikTok
TikTok has removed an inflammatory anti- Israel video posted by celebrity beauty mogul and influencer Huda Kattan. Kattan, the founder and face of the billion-dollar brand Huda Beauty, shared a video to her more than 11 million followers on TikTok, accusing Israel of orchestrating World War I, World War II, the September 11 terrorist attacks and Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7. World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945) both occurred before the State of Israel was established in 1948. 'All of the conspiracy theories coming out and a lot of evidence behind them — that Israel has been behind World War I, World War II, September 11, October 7 — they allowed all of this stuff to happen. Is this crazy?' Kattan said on camera in her since-removed TikTok post, which included other unfounded claims about Israel. 'Like, I had a feeling — I was like, 'Are they behind every world war?' Yes.' A representative for TikTok confirmed Kattan's video was removed for violating community guidelines. 'In a global community, it is natural for people to have different opinions, but we seek to operate on a shared set of facts and reality,' TikTok's community guidelines state. 'We do not allow misinformation that may cause significant harm to individuals or society, regardless of intent.' Kattan's agency did not respond to a request for comment. A manager listed on public databases as a representative for Kattan was contacted and said in an email that they no longer represent her. Calls for Sephora to ban Huda Beauty products Kattan's video has spurred calls across social media and among Jewish groups for retailers like Sephora to cut ties with her popular beauty brand, Huda Beauty, which was valued at $US1.2 billion ($A1.8 billion) in 2017 and brings in roughly $US200 million ($A308 million) in annual sales, according to Forbes. A representative for Sephora has not responded to a request for comment. This is not the first time the beauty influencer has faced calls for boycotts due to her public commentary after October 7. Kattan, whose company has over 57 million followers on Instagram, has been an outspoken critic of Israel and a staunch supporter of Palestinians in Gaza. Within a week of Hamas attacking Israel on October 7, 2023, an Israeli Instagram user threatened to boycott her products, to which Kattan replied: 'I don't want blood money.' In response to that comment, a petition was launched and received over 30,000 signatures, calling on Sephora to remove Huda Beauty products from its stores. Kattan's most recent TikTok video drew swift backlash from Jewish groups. 'Huda Kattan built a brand around beauty — but these antisemitic conspiracy theories are nothing short of ugly hate,' CEO of the Anti-Defamation League Jonathan Greenblatt said. 'Spreading vile myths about Jews to millions of followers isn't just reckless — it's dangerous.' The American Jewish Committee posted Kattan's since-removed TikTok video on social media, writing, 'Huda Kattan, founder of Huda Beauty, is using her massive platform to spread vile antisemitic conspiracy theories — accusing Jews of harvesting the organs of Palestinians, causing 9/11, and running global paedophile rings. This isn't 'criticism of Israel'. It's centuries-old hate, repackaged and broadcast to millions.' 'Retailers have a choice,' managing director of the Jewish nonprofit JLens Ari Hoffnung said. 'They can continue to platform a brand whose founder promotes hate-fuelled conspiracy theories, or they can take a stand against antisemitism.' Forbes included Kattan on their 2023 list of America's Richest Self-Made Women and on their list of Most Powerful Women in Business in 2024.

How ads targeting gamers, TikTok users helped boost Defence recruitment by thousands
The Albanese government believes it has turned the tide on the Australian Defence Force's recruitment crisis, with thousands of new recruits signing up after a marketing blitz targeting young people on social media and online games. Data released by Defence on Monday shows enlistments reached a 15-year high in 2024-25, with 7059 people joining the permanent ADF and Gap Year Program, a 17 per cent increase from the previous year. The new recruits included 1524 to the army, 3442 to the army and 2093 to the air force, lifting the full-time head count of the ADF by 1868 to 61,189. Social media ads targeted young people on Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and LinkedIn to encourage them to apply, with the Navy's Submariner campaign video on TikTok last year viewed by more than 840,000 people. More than 75,000 people applied to join the ADF, the highest number in five years, while the separation rate fell to the lowest in a decade, from 11.2 per cent to 9 per cent. The Opposition has criticised the Albanese government over the recruitment crisis facing Australia's armed forces, while calling for Defence spending to be raised to 3 per cent of GDP in a decade. The 2024 Defence Workforce Plan set a goal to grow the ADF to 69,000 by the early 2030s, but this was not on track, with an annual shortfall of about 4400 ADF personnel. The government now believes it is on track thanks to the recent improvements in retention and recruitment. Defence Personnel Minister Matt Keogh said continuation bonuses, assisted study, changes to defence housing rules to support families and help ADF members buy homes, pay increases for critical roles and a broadening of the recruitment pool to allow permanent residents from Five Eyes countries to apply, had made a difference, as well as speeding up medical assessments. "We've had to really work hard to turn that situation around ... both from a recruitment point of view, but also from a retention point of view," Mr Keogh said. Meeting with personnel across Australia, he said it became clear that "friction points" such as housing were leading people to leave the Defence force "because of the pressures it places on families", leading to reforms such as expanding access to a discounted interest rate scheme for purchasing a home. The ADF had also started to provide "greater flexibility for families to stay in Defence-supported housing" when their ADF family member moved across the country, a change that was "really important for things like being able to enrol into schools ... and accessing childcare". ADF service has also been broadened to allow people with some medical conditions previously excluded to apply. "In the 21st Century, we're now making sure that our eligibility requirements match the more than 300 different types of roles that are available in the Defence force," Mr Keogh said. "So if you're doing something like cyber ops, you know, you're working out of a basement ... We don't need to have as strict requirements as might be required, as someone who's going to be in an infantry force that's going to be deployable outside of Australia." He said while it was positive to see growth in the ADF, "we have more work to do in this area" and that delivering on the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide was "really important for improving people's perceptions of, and therefore also their willingness to, join". In 2022, the Coalition announced it would grow the Defence workforce by 18,500 by 2040, but had no plan to achieve this target and only allocated funding for 12,500 of the total amount.
