School Holiday: The decision to close schools on Sawan Shivratri and Mondays is based on expected crowding, traffic jams, and security concerns during the Kanwar Yatra.
The month of Sawan is considered a sacred period dedicated to Lord Shiva. In 2025, Sawan commenced on July 11 and will continue until August 9. During this time, Mondays are significant, and Sawan Shivratri holds particular importance. Due to anticipated traffic disruptions caused by crowds at temples and the Kanwar Yatra, many schools in UP and MP have declared holidays.
This year, Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. This day holds great religious significance. To manage the heavy crowd and traffic on Kanwar Yatra and Shivratri, schools and colleges in many North Indian states will remain closed.
— In Meerut and Muzaffarnagar, all schools and colleges will be closed till tomorrow, July 23, with strict penalties for violations of the order.
— In Bareilly, schools and colleges within a 5 km radius of the Delhi-Badaun road will be closed on every Monday of Sawan (July 14, 21, 28 and August 4).
— In Badaun, schools from class 1 to 8 will be on holiday on Saturdays and Mondays (July 19-21, July 26-28, August 2-4), with mandatory attendance for teachers.
— In Varanasi, schools will close every Monday of Sawan, with classes held on Sundays.
— In Jabalpur, a school holiday is declared on July 21.
— In Ujjain, schools will close every Monday from July 14 to August 11, with compensatory classes held on Sundays, due to the crowds at Mahakaleshwar temple.
— In Noida, most schools in Noida and Ghaziabad of Delhi-NCR will be closed for Sawan Shivratri on July 23, 2025.
Sawan Shivratri is a day for worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in Hinduism. Devotees offer water, Belpatra, milk, and other items to the Shivling. During the Kanwar Yatra, millions of devotees bring Gangajal from Haridwar, Gangotri, and other pilgrimage sites to offer in Shiva temples. This Yatra leads to congestion and traffic jams, making it difficult for children to commute to schools, hence the closures in sensitive areas.
The decision to close schools on Sawan Shivratri and Mondays is based on expected crowding, traffic jams, and security concerns during the Kanwar Yatra. With no-vehicle zones in place in many areas, school buses and children's movement might be affected. Some schools may conduct online classes, and parents are advised to check the school's official notice for updates.

Russia starts direct commercial flights between Moscow, Pyongyang

Moscow, Jul 27 (AP) Russia on Sunday opened a regular air link between Moscow and Pyogyang, a move reflecting increasingly close ties between the two countries. The first flight operated by Russian carrier Nordwind took off from Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport carrying over 400 passengers. Russia's Transport Ministry said there will be one flight a month to meet demand. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who visited North Korea's new Wonsan-Kalma beach resort earlier this month to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, promised to encourage Russian tourists to visit the complex. The resort, which can accommodate nearly 20,000 people, is at the centre of Kim's push to boost tourism to improve his country's troubled economy. North Korea has been slowly easing the curbs imposed during the pandemic and reopening its borders in phases. But the country hasn't said if it would fully resume international tourism. Regular flights between Russia's eastern port city of Vladivostok and Pyongyang reopened in 2023 following a break caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Russia and North Korea have sharply expanded military and other ties in recent years, with Pyongyang supplying weapons and troops to back Russia's military action in Ukraine. IndiGo to add more intl destinations; to explore new MRO opportunities

New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) IndiGo will continue to add more overseas destinations with A321 XLRs set to join the fleet this fiscal year and aims to increase its international capacity share to 40 per cent by 2030. Also, the country's largest airline plans to explore new opportunities in the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) space, according to its annual report for 2024-25. IndiGo, which has been flying for over 18 years, has a domestic market share of 64.5 per cent, operates around 2,200 flights daily with more than 430 planes. 'We will continue to add more destinations internationally, especially with XLRs coming in along with our newly leased wide body aircraft for long haul operations. From 28 per cent current international capacity share, we are aiming for 40 per cent by FY 2030," IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said in his message in the annual report. Earlier this month, the carrier started flights to Manchester and Amsterdam that are being operated with Boeing 787 Dreamliners leased from Norway's Norse Atlantic. The long range A321 XLRs and wide-body A350-900s are expected to join the airline's fleet in the current fiscal year ending March 2026, and 2027, respectively. 'IndiGo also plans to explore new opportunities in the MRO space as India's infrastructure development is picking up," it said. The airline is setting up an MRO facility in Bengaluru. In the annual report, the airline said its outlook remains promising, supported by a healthy demand environment and firm capacity growth. 'While macroeconomic uncertainties and operating headwinds such as aircraft groundings and fuel cost volatility remain, IndiGo continues to proactively manage these challenges through fleet diversification, damp leasing strategies and strategic agreements with OEMs," it said. OEM refers to original equipment manufacturer. PTI RAM IAS TRB view comments First Published: July 27, 2025, 20:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
