Mind-bending' TV drama that had fans calling in sick races up Netflix chart

A mind-bending Netflix series that had fans lying to their bosses so they could binge the 'gut-wrenching' finale has raced up the Netflix chart. Part two of the second season of The Sandman, adapted from Neil Gaiman's beloved comic book series, dropped on Netflix on July 24. Since landing on the service, the second season has flown to #3 on the Netflix Top Ten and been viewed more than three million times. The second season focuses on Dream and his epic final journey as he seeks to rebuild his kingdom following his dramatic battle with Doctor John Dee. However, the show has been marred by accusations against Gaiman, which sent shockwaves through his fan base earlier this year. Despite that, the show has remained extremely popular with its fans, even causing them to 'call in sick' so they can watch it. Before it was released on the streaming platform, Sullyville said on Reddit: 'I called in sick. I just had an iced coffee. I'm here with you all waiting for the drop.' Taking to X, @DailyJakeSweet added: 'Well, it's over. The Sandman is over. I'm a mess I won't tell more to avoid spoilers but I'm happy that we were given such a great adaptation, with a fabulous cast. Also, I didn't stop crying, did I mention I'm a mess?' @LauraRival1 commented: 'I have no words, it's magnificent, this adaptation is a jewel with intense emotions. The actors are just perfect! Thank you all for bringing this story to life!' @howlnini also said: 'TheSandmanSeason2 a beautiful end to a beautiful show :) What a ride! I will remain seated for the final episode.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Despite the overwhelmingly positive reactions to the series, Netflix has already confirmed that this will be the last we see of Dream (Tom Sturridge). In an announcement that came in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations levied against Gaiman, who co-developed the show from his comics. Ahead of the season, Netflix released a teaser trailer for The Sandman season two, which did not mention Gaiman by name. Allan Heinberg, the Sandman showrunner, also avoided mentioning Gaiman or the allegations against him when he shared a statement about the show's conclusion. 'The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,' he told Netflix's Tudum. More Trending Several of Gaiman's upcoming projects have been cancelled or delayed in the wake of the allegations. Most notably, we're still waiting to find out when season 3 of the Prime Video show Good Omens will air, while Dark Horse Comics has cancelled Gaiman's Anansi Boys series. The Sandman season 2 part two is available to stream on Netflix. View More » An earlier version of this story was published on July 24. Got a story? Scottie Scheffler backed to follow in Tiger Woods' footsteps as 'weakness' claim made

Scottie Scheffler, 29, blew the rest of the field away to win his fourth major title last week and add the Claret Jug to his two Masters victories and win at the PGA Championship Ernie Els insists Scottie Scheffler is every bit as dominant as Tiger Woods was at his peak and has backed the Texan to become one of the all-time greats after winning The Open. ‌ Scheffler, 29, blew the rest of the field away to win his fourth major title last week and add the Claret Jug to his two Masters victories and win at the PGA Championship. ‌ It was a performance that had more than a trace of Woods at his very best. Scheffler is the first world No.1 to win The Open since Woods in 2006 and has now won all four of his majors having led after 54-holes - a trait Woods was famously known for after converting an overnight lead into a major title 14 times. ‌ Both men also took 1197 days to win their fourth major from the date of their first triumph, and the pair are two of only four players – the other two being Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player – to win the Masters, The Open and PGA Championship before the age of 30. And two-time Open Champion, and fellow four-time major winner, Els thinks as long as Scheffler continues to dominate, his name will carry on being mentioned alongside Woods'. 'There's always going to be similarities between Scottie Scheffler and Tiger because of the way he's performing and the way he's winning,' said Els, speaking at the launch of his new golf club, Els Club Vilamoura. 'It's very much the way Tiger did things. He takes leads and he doesn't relinquish those leads. He's not scared of winning anymore, he knows how to win. He's becoming ruthless in that manner. 'His game is awesome. He's got no real weakness. His putting is one of his strengths now, so all in all, he's very, very interesting to watch. I'd love to see what he does in the next five to 10 years.' Scheffler's triumph at The Open also continues the recent stronghold on the competition held by US players. ‌ The last three Claret Jugs have been lifted by those who hail from across the Atlantic thanks to Xander Schauffele and Brian Harman's wins in 2024 and 2023 respectively. For Els, it dispels the myth about Americans struggling on links courses. 'I think you adapt,' continued the South African, who won his first Open at Muirfield in 2002 before winning the Claret Jug 10 years later at Royal Lytham & St Annes. ‌ 'When you're a good ball striker, and you have to be a good ball striker on links land, if you can strike the ball out of the middle of a club, you will learn how to play on links. 'It's normally a good ball striker who will get himself to learn how to play. Scottie Scheffler has learned how to do that. David Duval did that, Phil Mickelson too. 'There are a lot of players that have done that and had success on links course] that have never really played links. ‌ 'When you find your way around links, you're going to have success, and that's what's going on.' Els played a nine-hole exhibition to open the Els Club Vilamoura alongside Scottish legend Colin Montgomerie and 2001 Open Champion David Duval. The Algarve course is a championship-standard 18-hole golf course that features a luxury clubhouse and signature amenities such as the 261 Bar, and was built on the redesigned Victoria course, which hosted the Portugal Masters from 2007 to 2022. ‌ It will host the new PGA Champions Tour event, the Portugal Invitational, after signing a five-year deal. The first edition of the event is set to be held between 31 July to 2 August 2026. Els said: 'Golf is in the pretty sweet spot at the moment and [creating this course] has been a really nice venture. We want the conditions to be absolutely perfect and for people to have a great experience and good food.' Montgomerie added: 'The golf course is superb, and the clubhouse is fantastic. It's not just a course for the present; it's a course for the future as well.' PGA TOUR Champions announces the Portugal Invitational to be held at The Els Club Vilamoura on course designed by Ernie Els. PGA TOUR Champions, Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal, and Turismo de Algarve will deliver a five-year partnership and will debut the week of July 27, 2026, and will feature a field of 78 players. Actress shares major update on Madonna biopic after having to ‘convince' star

Julia Garner has revealed the Madonna biopic, in which she will play the music icon, is still in the works. She also reassured fans about the delay, saying that 'anything that's great…takes a long time'. The Ozark actress was reportedly cast as the Material Girl hitmaker in 2022 but months later, the project was placed on hold, and its fate has been up in the air ever since. However, Julia said in a new interview on Monday that it is 'supposed to still happen'. The Fantastic Four: First Steps star had been a fan of Madonna when she was growing up so knew she had to audition as soon as she heard the project was in the pipeline. She told the SmartLess podcast of her initial involvement with the biopic: 'It just came about… like I knew that they were doing a project, making a movie about it, and then I went out to audition. I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it.' The 31-year-old actress has no dance training, so she had to learn how to move and then show off her skills in front of Madonna herself – as well as sing with her – and 'convince' the 66-year-old that she could do both. Naturally, a very daunting situation – but the Inventing Anna star decided to channel the Vogue hitmaker during the nerve-wracking process. Explaining that she asked herself what Madonna would do, she added: 'Which is like convince you that she deserves to be in this room. And I owned it. I was like, 'You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that's on you.'' In July last year, Madonna revealed she was working on a new draft script for the biopic, which is expected to be titled Who's That Girl in a nod to the singer's 1987 movie and song of the same name. She will also be directing the movie. Madonna took to Instagram and posted a collection of photos of herself working on the script with the caption: 'I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this ……….. OKAY. (Story of my life) [sic].' The film was announced in 2020, and Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody and Snow White's Erin Cressida Wilson were brought on to help the Like A Virgin hitmaker with the script and screenplay. However, in January 2023, it was revealed the film had been paused indefinitely at Universal Pictures. After the movie was shelved, Madonna went on her Celebration Tour in October 2023 to mark four decades in the music industry, but reportedly resumed work on the project once she got back home in June in the hopes she could finalise the script with Universal. An industry insider previously told The Sun newspaper's Bizarre column: 'Madonna has only just finished her tour but in her mind it is on to the next project and fulfilling her dream of getting the biopic made. 'Julia is still her lead actress and they have remained in touch for the past year, talking through ideas. They are committed to creating some magic.' The duo had also hyped up fans by being photographed together at a celebrity party in May that year, chowing down on chips, while Julia also appeared onstage during the tour with Madonna in December 2023. The Papa Don't Preach chart-topper had explained she wanted to both direct and write the movie because she wanted complete control over the project. She told Variety: 'I've had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. 'It was also a pre-emptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. 'So I put my foot in the door and said, 'No one's going to tell my story, but me.'' More Trending Madonna would be following a line of musical biopics produced in recent years, including Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody, Sir Elton John movie Rocketman and the underperforming Better Man, based on the life of Robbie Williams. Garner is currently in cinemas as the Silver Surfer opposite Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in the MCU's reboot of The Fantastic Four. It's enjoyed a strong opening, raking in $218million (£163.3m) already, surpassing the summer's other superhero flack in DC Studio's Superman from director James Gunn. Got a story?
