Most popular video game-inspired baby names of 2025 revealed
Baby name books may no longer rule supreme with parents turning to the gaming universe for inspiration
From much-loved names passed down through generations to titles inspired by a romantic trip you took with your partner before falling pregnant, there are many instances in life that contribute to what we name our child.
However, an expert has revealed that traditional baby names in video game characters are inspiring parents worldwide, meaning our penchant for the digital world is actually influencing some of the biggest choices we make in real life.
Remember frantically choosing a name for your Skyrim character or Sims family? Now parents are facing that same excitement - and pressure - when naming actual humans.
"Gaming is such a big part of modern culture, it's part of who we are," Serge Eliseeff, CEO of Online Free Games, explained. "The characters we connect with through hundreds of gameplay hours become meaningful to us. So it makes perfect sense that their names would top the list when parents are brainstorming baby names."
To see which video game names are trending in nurseries, Online Free Games analysed global Google searches for baby name queries related to famous gaming characters.
They tracked search patterns over the past year for names from IGDB's top 100 games, looking at how often people searched things like '[name] baby name' or 'is [name] a boy or girl name.'
So, from badass heroines to legendary outlaws, read on to see the video game character names parents are hitting "select" on for their little players.
Topping the list is Jade, the protagonist from Ubisoft's cult classic Beyond Good & Evil. As a photojournalist fighting against alien conspiracies, Jade represents courage and determination.
The name, meaning ' precious stone,' bridges traditional appeal with gaming cool factor. Though the original game came out in 2003, anticipation for the long-awaited sequel has kept Jade relevant in gaming culture.
The name's somewhat gender-neutral sound and short, punchy style fits modern naming trends, while still honouring gaming history.
Coming in second is Max, the time-rewinding photography student from Life is Strange. This choice highlights the growing preference for shorter, unisex names that work across gender lines.
Max (short for Maxine in the game) represents a character known for compassion and complex decision-making.
The name's gender flexibility mirrors current naming trends, with parents increasingly choosing names that work for any gender. Life is Strange's likely resonates with millennial and Gen Z parents who grew up gaming.
Rounding out the top three is Arthur, after Arthur Morgan, the rugged outlaw with a heart of gold from Red Dead Redemption 2. Classic names can clearly get a popularity boost when connected to compelling modern characters.
Arthur, meaning 'bear' or 'noble,' delivers traditional masculinity with a touch of cowboy cool. The character's redemption arc and moral complexity make him more than just a typical video game protagonist, giving the name depth and resonance for parents who appreciate nuanced storytelling alongside Western aesthetics.
The rest of the top 10 features a balanced mix of classic and contemporary names. Lee from Telltale's The Walking Dead and Isaac from the horror series Dead Space represent strong male options. Meanwhile, Faith from Mirror's Edge offers spiritual meaning alongside gaming cred.
Apollo from Ace Attorney brings mythological weight, while Chloe from Uncharted and Claire from Resident Evil represent timeless female options. Surprisingly, the iconic Link from The Legend of Zelda barely makes the top 10, suggesting parents may prefer names that blend more easily into traditional naming conventions.
"What we're seeing here is the natural evolution of how culture shapes our most personal choices," Serge went on. "Parents have always named children after heroes – it's just that today's heroes are more likely to be virtual.
"The popularity of names like Jade and Arthur shows that parents are looking for names with substance and meaning. They're choosing characters known for their courage, resilience, and moral complexity – qualities any parent would want their child to embody.
"It's fascinating to see how the lines between virtual worlds and real life continue to blur, with video games now influencing one of the most significant decisions a parent can make."

EastEnders fans ‘work out' wild new romance for returning Max Branning
EastEnders fans are already speculating about Max Branning's (Jake Wood) return. It was reported over the weekend that the love rat would be heading back to Albert Square after four years. The last time we saw him, Max decided to call time on his life in Walford to join daughter Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) and grandson Louie in New Zealand. It later transpired that Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) – who he had an affair with the previous year – was pregnant with their daughter Annie. Lauren first met her younger sister last year, though it hasn't been made clear if she ever told Max that he fathered another child. In scenes that air this week, her newborn son Jimmy will be diagnosed with a visual impairment, with Linda comforting her through the difficult news. Is this what will bring Max home? 'Jake's return is huge news for EastEnders fans as his character made a massive mark on the show,' a source told The Sun. 'It'll raise some eyebrows after he was absent from the 40th anniversary earlier this year. Bosses are excited about what his character's reappearance means for spicing up the plots. 'There is plenty to go at. Max has loads of unfinished business in the Square and is set to ruffle some feathers.' His scandalous relationship with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) was also referenced recently. Back in 2007, almost 15 million of us tuned in to see their affair exposed on Christmas Day in front of the entire Branning and Slater families. Surely it's only a matter of time before womaniser Max seeks out a new Walford lady, and while it's likely that he's likely that a reunion with Stacey will be at the top of his list, they're never going to be able to play happy families. Now I'm now advocating Cindy Beale as the most grounded of residents, but given she's here for the long-term and has literally zero friends or family on her side, it's about time she starts settling down. Ian will always be the one for her – there's no doubt about that – but as much as they love one another, they're just not compatible. Almost four decades of baggage has proved testament to that. As for Max, there's always the likelihood that old feelings could resurface for Linda too, especially when he realises they share a daughter. It's certainly going to be an interesting return! I spent £125 at Charli XCX's favourite restaurant - one thing had to be changed
As a north Londoner, when I heard that Charli XCX's favourite London restaurant was just down the road in Highbury and Islington, I knew I had to pop in for a bite Charli XCX is easily one of the most influential figures for Gen Z and Millenials alike, thanks to the success of her 2024 album Brat, which birthed the iconic Brat Summer era and sent a slime green wave global as fans channelled their inner Brat. A year on, the 365 singer is still having a cultural impact, from her DJ set with Cannes (alongside fiancé George Daniel) to her song 'I think about it all the time' climbing in virality on TikTok as the backing track for the new 'propaganda I'm not falling for' trend. As the cultural icon she's become, her recommendations are treated like gold dust and thankfully, she's not gatekeeping them. In a video posted in November 2024, Charli engaged in a quick-fire Q&A with Top Jaw, sharing her top recommendations, from the best bar in London (she says it's Trisha's in Soho) to her favourite restaurant. Charli's favourite London spot, Trullo, is based in Highbury and Islington. The quaint, unassuming restaurant is mere seconds from the tube station, and is nested on St Paul's Road. It's only noticeable by it's royal blue exterior and doubles as the perfect spot for a mega star to grab a low-key bite. I managed to book a table for 9pm, fairly late but a win is a win. Once seated at our table, the lights around us dimmed and my friend and I couldn't help but notice how cosy and - dare I say - romantic the spot had become. It'd make the perfect place for a date. We ordered sparkling white wine and the Bruschetta of Westcombe ricotta and marinated Olasagasti anchovy (£14.50) to start, although our waiter described a delicious squid starter option that wasn't featured on the menu. For mains, we both loved the sound of the Pici with white asparagus, prosciutto San Daniele and egg yolk (£21), but asked for a different pasta shape - sorry to be pici but I love tagliatelle! Our waiter obliged and offered the meal in a tagliatelle shape instead which tasted divine. With a huge portion, oozing with flavour, it's no surprise that Charli listed this as one of her favourites in the whole city. From incredible service, indulgent food and a cosy atmosphere. In total, our meal, including drinks and service charge cost £125.42 for two. You really can't go wrong with a bite at Trullo, but good luck at getting a spot as bookings fill fast. Next month, you'll be able to experience Charli's very own music recommendations, as the singer has been busy curating her own 'Party Girl Festival' which she'll headline along with personally chosen special guests, including 070 Shake, The Dare and The Japanese House, with many more still to come. The 'Party Girl Festival' is part of the LIDO festival and will take place from June 6 to June 15, but Charli won't take to the stage until June 14. The singer announced the 'Party Girl Festival' via Instagram, sharing the festival poster with the caption: "I'm throwing a festival in London in Victoria Park on June 14th and all these people are playing so get tickets xx." Fans took to the comments to share their excitement at the line-up and Charli's impending performance, with one writing: "This the only time I wish I lived in the UK."

The long-running US cult drama, Lost, will has landed on the streamer just in time for those who are overdue a rewatch or looking to finally binge one of the buzziest shows of the 21st century. The ABC series, starring Matthew Fox, Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly, ran from 2004 to 2010 and follows the survivors of a plane crash on a remote tropical island in the South Pacific Ocean. As our characters scramble to stay alive, we delve into what led each of them here as they begin to uncover a bigger conspiracy at the heart of this disaster. Created by J. J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffrey Lieber, Lost quickly amassed a cult following before cementing itself as one of the most culturally influential American TV shows of the era.
