Claude 4 Sonnet, Opus AI models released with enhanced coding capabilities

Anthropic has announced the launch of its new Claude 4 Sonnet and Claude 4 Opus AI models, now available through Claude's website and in Application Programming Interface (API). According to the company's official blog post, both models bring significant improvements in coding abilities, with Claude 4 Opus in particular targeting state-of-the-art performance across a variety of AI benchmarks.
The company stated that Claude Sonnet 4 outperforms its predecessor, Sonnet 3.7, while Claude Opus 4 is said to match or exceed the capabilities of competing large language models like OpenAI's o3, GPT-4.1, and Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro. These results are based on benchmarks that test areas such as multilingual proficiency, agentic tool use, autonomous coding via terminal interfaces, and graduate-level reasoning.
The announcement comes just weeks after both OpenAI and Google released updated AI models with enhanced coding capabilities. OpenAI debuted its o3 and GPT-4.1, while Google launched Gemini 2.5 Pro, which drew attention after reportedly completing a full playthrough of Pokémon Blue.
New capabilities and Claude Code
Anthropic has also announced some new capabilities. Here are the details:
Extended reasoning with tools (beta): Claude models can now use tools like web search while engaging in deeper reasoning. This lets them switch between thinking and tool use to generate better results.
Improved model abilities: Claude 4 Sonnet and Claude 4 Opus can now run tools simultaneously, follow instructions with greater accuracy, and, when granted access to local files, show enhanced memory—picking up and storing key information to ensure better context retention and learning over time.
Claude Code is now widely available: Claude Code is now open for broader use. It supports background processes through GitHub Actions and integrates directly with development tools like VS Code and JetBrains, offering in-line edits for smoother collaborative coding.
Claude 4 Sonnet and Opus: Availability
Anthropic states that both models are accessible via the Anthropic API, as well as through partners like Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud's Vertex AI.
Pricing for Opus 4 is set at $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens, while Sonnet 4 is priced at $3 for input and $15 for output per million tokens.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, 'the conference may be a letdown from an AI standpoint.' His report suggests Apple is not planning any major new features for its Apple Intelligence suite and will instead focus on significant updates to its operating systems across devices — iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and more. Bloomberg had previously reported that Apple is aiming for a broader platform overhaul, emphasising consistency and streamlined navigation across devices. The company may also revamp the naming convention for its operating systems. Although platform updates are expected to headline the event, Apple Intelligence is still likely to see meaningful enhancements. Apple may introduce a new software development kit (SDK) and related frameworks that allow developers to integrate Apple Intelligence tools, like Writing Tools, more deeply into their apps. Additionally, Apple is reportedly exploring partnerships with third-party AI providers like Google and Anthropic to bring their models to Apple Intelligence, similar to the current integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT. Gurman's report also notes that Apple may be treating 2025 as a 'gap year' for AI, with more substantial announcements expected at WWDC 2026. Ongoing AI projects reportedly include a next-gen Siri based on a large language model (LLM), bringing enhanced on-screen awareness, personal context, and natural conversation capabilities. WWDC 2025: What to expect Platform updates Apple is reportedly preparing a significant redesign of its operating systems aimed at creating a more unified user experience across devices. This would help users transition more seamlessly between platforms such as iOS and macOS. Aesthetic updates could include translucent menus and panels inspired by visionOS, subtle motion effects, and shimmering elements that respond to device movement. Apple may also change the naming convention for its OS versions. For example, the next version of iOS might be called iOS 26 instead of iOS 19. Gaming app Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new app focused on video games across its ecosystem including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. According to Bloomberg, this app will allow users to launch games, view achievements, check leaderboards, and access curated gaming content. It will also integrate App Store titles, much like Microsoft's Xbox app on iOS. Apple is expected to introduce features that simplify switching from an iPhone to an Android device. One such feature, recently spotted in Android 16 beta code, is wireless eSIM transfer from iOS to Android. Currently, moving an eSIM requires carrier intervention. These updates are likely part of Apple's compliance with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates greater ecosystem openness. AI-powered battery optimisation Apple is reportedly developing an AI-based battery management feature for iOS. The system would analyse app usage, background activity, and charging patterns to intelligently adjust performance and extend battery life. A new lock screen indicator is expected to show estimated charging time. Revamped Health app The Health app is also in line for a major upgrade. According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to introduce an AI-powered health coaching system that provides personalised wellness recommendations, expert-led videos, and enhanced fitness tracking. For the first time, the Health app is also expected to include food tracking. However, the full rollout of this revamped experience may happen gradually, with iOS 19.4 likely delivering most of the new features.

Samsung NEXT, the investment arm of Samsung, provided funding to the startup in 2024. Apple recently displayed their interest in exploring Perplexity's technological capabilities. Apple services head Eddy Cue explained during the antitrust trial against Google that his company initiated talks to explore Perplexity search tools for Siri as an alternative to Google or ChatGPT because they were impressed by Perplexity's capabilities. The potential impact of a Samsung-Perplexity partnership on the current discussions between Apple and Perplexity is yet unknown.

Previously limited to Ultra plan users, Veo 3 is now available through Flow—Google's AI filmmaking platform—and the Gemini mobile app. The model, introduced at Google I/O last month, supports native audio generation that syncs with visuals, allowing Pro users to create more immersive video content. Google stated that in regions where the Ultra Plan is active, AI Pro subscribers will now get limited access to Veo 3 within Flow, along with a 10-pack of trial video generations in the Gemini app. Meanwhile, Ultra subscribers will continue to enjoy higher generation limits. Google also noted that users will be notified when they approach their usage limit, including how many generations remain. It builds on previous iterations with the ability to not only create realistic visuals from text prompts but also generate matching audio, including ambient sounds and character dialogue. 'Veo 3 excels from text and image prompting to real-world physics and accurate lip syncing. It's great at understanding; you can tell a short story in your prompt, and the model gives you back a clip that brings it to life,' Google said in a blog post. Veo 3 also powers Flow, Google's AI filmmaking platform, which enables paid users to generate 1080p resolution videos, leverage advanced camera controls, extend existing footage, and more.
