Late start, big dream: Redditor asks how to become an Olympic runner at 18

On Reddit, a curious user recently discovered their passion for running and wanted to make a step towards a higher goal–to become an Olympian. The Redditor shared that he can do a max speed of 38 km/h in short sprints, and would really like to learn how to become a professional athlete. He is committed to working very hard and to achieving this goal; however, he does not know where to start.
With this, the aspiring Olympian posed a question: 'How can I become an Olympic runner if I'm starting late at 18, and what kind of training should I follow?'
Several Redditors shared their thoughts and advice on getting started in athletics. One stated that generally, becoming an Olympian is extremely difficult, even for those naturally gifted from a young age, but suggested joining an athletic club as a first step.
Another user highlighted the value of showing up at qualifier events. 'Even if you're not on the team, they're gonna look at your country and your time,' the comment read.
One Redditor chimed in with a personal perspective, sharing three lessons from their own journey toward becoming an Olympic athlete:
'One, enjoy the journey. You will likely never make the destination, but you will still have grown considerably in the effort if you allow yourself to do so.
'Two, don't sacrifice too much. If you want to be an Olympian, it takes a lot of sacrifice, but don't forget the things that are far more important, particularly your own mental health.
'Three, remember that the path to success isn't a straight line, and success doesn't have to be defined solely by [achieving] your original goal. Every incremental improvement is a success to be proud of. Don't compare yourself with others, but with who you were yesterday.' Train like an Olympic athlete
In one of their articles, Ochsner Health shared some practical tips for training like an Olympian: Stay focused on your goal. You should know exactly what you're working toward and be specific in your training approach. Do your research. Look for proven training strategies and curate a schedule for training days. Find a training partner. Work with someone who can share the journey and hold you accountable. Fuel your body. Hydrate with water and electrolytes (including potassium and sodium). Having a balanced diet is also recommended—limit fat intake, increase consumption of lean protein, and eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Mind your form. Good posture is also important, especially when exercising. Always remember to concentrate on your breathing and body positioning. Train smart, not just hard. On social media, the 23-time Olympic gold medalist started his sentiments by disclosing that he has utmost respect for the US swimmers who are representing the country at the World Championships. He clarified that his criticisms are not in any way directed at them, because he understands and honours their hard work to represent the country. 'My criticism is about the system, its leadership, and how it's failing,' the former member of the swimming team said. 'There have always been cracks in the system, but in the last nine years, I've seen those cracks grow,' he added. Phelps then went on by sharing his experience back when he was part of the swimming team in Rio back in 2016, where the team won 57% of the medals. He compared the results to last year's Paris Olympics and pinpointed the huge difference. 'Fast forward eight years to Paris, where Team USA won only 44% of the medals they had the opportunity to win in the pool, the lowest percentage the sport had seen since the 1988 Olympics,' Phelps narrated. He then stated that the cause of the changes has been the leadership of USA Swimming. Phelps declared: 'Poor leadership trickles down and can impact an organisation at every level.' He also addressed that when he voiced out his concerns to the organisation, he felt that nobody wanted to talk about how 'broken' the USA Swimming has become. 'If we don't talk about it, it won't get fixed,' Phelps declared. 'Swimming to me was always about more than just medals–it's supposed to be an environment that builds champions in and out of the pool.' The steps include a whole independent review of USA Swimming's Board of Directors and its organisation as a whole, streamlining athlete services and developing a proactive, athlete-first way to support athletes competing in the sport, and focusing on strengthening the grassroots level of swimming. US Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley provisionally suspended for missed drug tests

American Olympic sprinter Fred Kerley has been temporarily suspended for missing three drug tests outside of competition within a span of a year. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said that missing these tests is considered as 'whereabouts failures' and can result in a two-year suspension. Under the anti-doping rules, athletes are required to provide updated information about their whereabouts for testing, which includes a one-hour time slot each day. With this, three missed tests in a 12-month period are counted as an anti-doping violation. Kerley has made his name known by winning a silver medal in the 100-metre event at the Tokyo Olympics. He also won a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics last summer. More so, he became the 100-metre world champion back in 2022 and has won six medals overall at world championships. On social media, Kerley expressed his side of the story by stating, 'I stand on truth. Out of respect for the legal process, I won't go into further details at this time. But I can promise you this — I will be strong for my name, my career, and my legacy.' 'I've faced storms before. Every time, I've come out stronger. This will be no different,' he added. Furthermore, through attorney Howard Jacobs, it was stated that Kerley would challenge the charge, and stated that the athlete 'strongly believes that one or more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location.' Richardson, who won three medals for Australia at the Paris Olympics, recorded a time of 8.941 seconds at the Konya Velodrome in Turkey on Thursday.
