PLDT High Speed Hitters rescued after getting stranded at QC training

GMA Network22-07-2025
The PLDT High Speed Hitters are now safe after being rescued from their training facility along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City, which was flooded on Monday due to heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.
In a post, PLDT shared that the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Army assisted in rescuing the players such as Majoy Baron, Kim Fajardo, Kath Arado, and Jovyy Prado among others.
"Maraming salamat po to our Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Army and our volley friends who assisted in rescuing our High Speed Hitters out of the Araneta Avenue area," PLDT said.
"Alam po namin na mahaba pa ang gabi niyo at marami pa kayong matutulungan. We can only hope and pray na ligtas din po kayong makakauwi sa inyong mga tahanan. Muli, maraming, maraming salamat!"
[Thank you to our Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Army and our volley friends who assisted in rescuing our High Speed Hitters out of the Araneta Avenue area... We know you have a long evening ahead and many more people to help. We can only hope and pray that you will return safely to your homes. Again, thank you very very much!]
In a separate video, veteran middle blocker Mika Reyes shared that the team had been stranded at the training venue for several hours before rescuers arrived with lifeboats, braving the flood to bring them to safety.
"Stranded for hours, but rescuers still came sumugod sa baha at walang pagod tumulong. I can only imagine what others went through in even more unstable places," Reyes said in an Instagram reel.
"Sana lahat ng nangangailangan, naabot ng tulog. Forever grateful to those who checked in, brought food and most of all to Philippine Army S&R and Raha Rescue."

The undefeated High Speed Hitters (3-0) will fly to Cebu this weekend to take on fellow unbeaten squad Nxled (3-0) and Galeries (0-3) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in the 2025 PVL On Tour.

Will Navarro leaves Magnolia to play for Busan KCC Egis in KBL

Will Navarro is ending his short stay at Magnolia in the PBA to play for the Busan KCC Egis in the upcoming season of the Korean Basketball League (KBL). The club announced Navarro's signing on Tuesday as the versatile forward marked the end of an almost three-month stint with the Hotshots, who acquired him in a trade for Calvin Abueva, Jerrick Balanza, and a future draft pick to NorthPort last May. ?"William Navarro is a new player in KCC Egis! We ask for lots of support and encouragement to William Navarro, who is making a new start at KCC Egis," the club said in an Instagram post. The transfer marks the realization of Navarro's dream to play abroad. Back in 2022, Navarro was set on suiting up for Seoul Samsung in KBL, but was not cleared due to an existing live contract with Gilas Pilipinas at the time. ?Navarro focused on his mother league, NorthPort, where he would lead the team alongside the core led by Cade Flores, Joshua Munzon, Evan Nelle, Fran Yu, and Sidney Onwubere, before his recent trade to Magnolia. In his short stay with Magnolia, Navarro helped the squad rack up eight wins against three losses to book one of the four twice-to-beat bonuses in the quarterfinals. The Hotshots, though, lost twice to TNT to bow out of contention. Magnolia recently named LA Tenorio as its new head coach. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Chery Tiggo knocks out Galeries to reach PVL On Tour quarterfinals

Chery Tiggo fended off a third set comeback attempt from Galeries to complete a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 win in their knockout duel in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Saturday at the Dasmariñas Arena in Cavite. The Crossovers advanced to the quarterfinals where they will lock horns with Nxled in another knockout duel. Chery Tiggo wiped out a 15-17 deficit in Set 3 after Jewel Encarnacion misfired on an attack from the left wing, allowing the Crossovers to level the score at 17-all. Ara Galang then denied Encarnacion from the same side before Shaya Adorador came up clutch with a kill of her own as both spikers fueled a 5-1 rampage that totally swung the momentum in their favor, 22-18. Ces Robles punctuated the straight-sets romp by forcing a check ball on her attack for match point, before sealing the deal with a clean kill from the same spot off a perfect set from Jasmine Nabor. "Actually, hindi madali 'yung pinanggalingan nu'ng game na 'to [kasi we're] coming off two losses doon sa Creamline tapos mas frustrating 'yung talo namin sa ZUS," Chery Tiggo head coach Norman Miguel said. "Physically, mahirap kasi kulang sa preparation at conditioning. Emotionally at mentally alam mong affected pa sila. So kanina, kinausap ko si Ara, Abby (Maraño), tsaka si Jasmine na 'wag sukuan 'tong game na 'to." —JKC, GMA Integrated News
