Arizona Cardinals preseason: 5 players saw stock rise in win over Chiefs
The Arizona Cardinals picked up a 20-17 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday night at State Farm Stadium. They came back from being down 14-3.
As the preseason goes, while the result doesn't matter as much as the performance of individual players.
Every day is an evaluation and games show what players do under the bright lights.
In the bright lights of Saturday's game, which players improved their stock?
RB Emari Demercado
Demercado will make the roster and will have a limited role playing on third down and special teams. However, he endears himself to coaches and fans when he makes plays like he did on Saturday, taking a short pass from Jacoby Brissett and turning it into a 43-yard touchdown.
While it isn't going to earn him more playing time on offense with James Conner and Trey Benson ahead of him, what it does do is give the coaches confidence in his ability to step in should there be an injury.
OLB Jordan Burch
Burch was disruptive but got little credit for it. Twice he had sacks negated by penalties. He was in the backfield causing problems, and if that is something he can do in the regular season, the Cardinals have a foursome of outside linebackers to be reckoned with in him, Josh Sweat, Zaven Collins and Baron Browning.
S Kitan Crawford
Crawford, a seventh-round rookie known for his special teams play, picked off a pass in the end zone. Making plays on defense and not just special teams increases his value. Can he show more upside than Joey Blount? That is the question. After one game, he is proving his worth.
CB Darren Hall
Hall had an interception and almost picked off a second pass. He offers special teams play and is good in the slot. It is going to be tough to make the roster this year, but he certainly helped his case.

Arizona Cardinals place WR Trishton Jackson on IR, add undrafted rookie WR
Jackson suffered a thumb injury on Sunday against the Chiefs. The Arizona Cardinals made a pair of roster moves on Tuesday dealing with the wide receiver room. After receiver Trishton Jackson suffered a thumb inury in the team's 20-17 preseason-opening win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the team placed him on injured reserve. Replacing him on offseason roster is receiver Kelly Akharaiyi, whom they signed Tuesday. Akharaiyi is an undrafted rookie who signed originally with the Buffalo Bills in May. He is six feet tall and 201 pounds and played collegiately for Tyler Junior College, UTEP and, in 2024, Mississippi State. Last year at Mississippi State, he had 391 yards and two touchdowns on 25 receptions. As a back-of-the-roster addition midway through the preseason, it is unlikely he will do enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, but perhaps he can earn a spot on someone's practice squad. If he gets any action in the team's preseason game on Saturday against the Denver Broncos, it will be late in the second half, but we can see if he can impress at all. NFL roster moves: Arizona Cardinals land OL Roy Mbaeteka off waivers
Roy Mbaeteka is added to the Cardinals' roster with an international exemption. The Arizona Cardinals have filled the vacancy left on their roster left when rookie offensive lineman Valentin Senn was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury. The Cardinals had a full 90-man roster, but because Senn, who is from Austria, was on the roster with an international exemption to be player No. 91, they could not immediately fill his spot. That happened Tuesday when they announced they were awarded offensive lineman Roy Mbaeteka, recently released by the Cleveland Browns. He was added to the roster with an international exemption to be player No. 91 on the roster. Mbaeteka is a mammoth of a man at 6-foot-8 and 330 pounds. Arizona Cardinals land international OL He was originally signed by the New York Giants in 2022 as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program and was on the Chicago Bears' practice squad in 2023 and the Browns' practice squad last season. A native of Benin City, Nigeria, Mbaeteka never played organized football prior to participating at a camp in his home country in 2021. Assuming he will not make the 53-man roster when roster cutdowns happen later this month, if he clears waivers, the Cardinals can re-sign him to their practice squad with an exemption so they can have 17 players instead of 16. He likely won't get enough work this week to play in the Cardinals' second preseason game on the road against the Denver Broncos on Saturday, but perhaps he will see action in the preseason finale on Aug. 23 against the Las Vegas Raiders at State Farm Stadium.
