Jeremy Kent Jackson: 'Gunslingers' is Shakespearean tragedy as western
NEW YORK, June 14 (UPI) -- Jeremy Kent Jackson says a complex character, intriguing premise and accomplished cast made it easy to say "yes" to starring in the new period film Gunslingers.
"This thing is Shakespearean in terms of its stakes and, as an actor, that's what you're looking for," Jackson told UPI in a recent Zoom interview.
"You're looking for a character that knows what he wants and needs and uses every single tool in his arsenal in order to get it," Jackson said. "That gives you an opportunity to put to use every single thing that you've ever studied as an actor and going up against some of the industry's best and brightest wasn't bad either."
Written and directed by Brian Skiba, the movie is set after the late 19th-century American Civil War in the aptly named Kentucky town of Redemption where various outlaws are seeking second chances, including Thomas Keller (Stephen Dorff), the estranged brother of Jackson's character Robert Keller, and Robert's wife Val (Heather Graham).
Nicolas Cage and Randall Batkinkoff round out the ensemble as Redemption locals.
"Robert Keller could have been a great guy," Jackson said.
"Robert Keller is a guy who wants to do right, like, I think, every person on the planet actually does, who had not enough tools gifted to him when he was young, probably, who wanted to love and was denied that love."
Robert's flaws deepened due to difficult circumstances and his brother's failure to step up for him when he needed him to, according to Jackson.
"So, Robert is an angry son of a gun who is out to get what he needs," the actor said, quipping that Robert and Val also don't get along and could probably benefit from some couple's counseling.
"I like that it's not a super-functional relationship. I think this is the classic, 'I love you more than you love me' scenario," he added. "It's kind of a marriage of convenience, at least on one side, and I think there's a lot of bitterness baked into it because of it."
Despite their strained on-screen relationship, Jackson said he loved collaborating with Graham.
"She was just about the nicest person I've ever encountered on set, just friendly as could be, warm and embracing and supportive," he recalled.
"We were shooting this little scene with the little girl in between us," he said. "We shot it a couple of times and then [Skiba] just kind of went over and whispered one little simple note in her ear and we rolled film on Take 3 or something and it was just like a complete spin. It was like she pressed a button and just went somewhere else. And I was like, 'Oh, that's why Heather Graham is Heather Graham, right?' She was so just responsive, ego-free, an awesome lady to work with."
Jackson said he had been a fan of Dorff's for years and regarded him as intense and intimidating before he actually met him.
"When I found out he was playing the brother, I was both stoked and a little bit like: 'OK, this is going to be interesting. I'm going toe-to-toe with that cat,'" he added.
"He cares a lot and it didn't take me but about a half hour to figure out where that tension comes from in him and it is an absolute love and passion for his work. The dude is a craftsman. He is an artist," Jackson said. "He knows his way around the camera, all sides, knows his lenses, taught me a ton and he respects discipline and focus and I do, too."
Unfortunately, Robert doesn't share any scenes with Cage's quirky Ben, so Jackson didn't get to spend any time with the Oscar winner.
"I got the script so late in this process," Jackson said.
"[The filmmakers] were like, 'Do you want to come up and see Nic?' and I was like, 'Well, I have 100 pages I need to memorize, work on and figure out. I think you guys want me on set on Wednesday and it's Monday, so I would just like to sit in my hotel room, please, and just work, work, work,'" Jackson explained. "So, I did not encounter Nic Cage. ... I'm waiting for the next film on that."

South Korea's Pinkfong wins 'Baby Shark' copyright fight
South Korea's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld lower court rulings against plagiarism claims by a U.S. songwriter who accused Pinkfong of plagiarizing a version of the "Baby Shark" song that became an international sensation, as evidenced by a Baby Shark balloon's appearance in the 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City. File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo Aug. 14 (UPI) -- A popular "Baby Shark" song that South Korea's young children adore and their parents often find annoying is not plagiarized, South Korea's highest court ruled on Thursday. The South Korean Supreme Court ruled the Pinkfong Co. did not plagiarize the song, as claimed in 2019 by U.S. children's songwriter Johnathan Wright, aka Johnny Only. Wright accused Pinkfong of plagiarizing an earlier version of "Baby Shark" that he penned, but the South Korean court ruled his was just another version of several other existing songs. The court said Wright is not the original composer and his version does not qualify as a "creative work" that is protected by intellectual property laws. Wright allegedly penned the song's "doo doo doo doo doo doo" chorus and uploaded his version to the internet in 2011. Pinkfong uploaded its version of the "Baby Shark" song in 2015 and again in 2016. That version became an international hit by setting a YouTube record with more than 10 billion views by 2022, which since has topped 16 billion. Wright sought $21,600 in compensation when accusing Pinkfong of plagiarism in a Seoul court. Pinkfong officials argued their version is a unique arrangement of an existing folk song that is in the public domain. Two South Korean courts agreed with Pinkfong and ruled against Wright's claim, which led to Thursday's final ruling by that nation's top court. The Supreme Court ruled Wright's 2011 version "had not reached the level of substantial alteration" of a folk song that had existed for years. The song's origins are in question, but it likely was created in the United States during the 1970s and became a popular summer camp song, the BBC reported. Some have suggested it was created after filmmaker Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" became a global sensation in 1975. Other versions of the song were recorded in France and Germany, among others. Pinkfong's version became the most successful of all and attained the No. 32 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2019. Its success spurred the creation of TV shows, movies, apps and Baby Shark-themed products that have generated millions in revenue for Pinkfong.

‘Mayor of Kingstown' Season 4 Premiere Date and Plot Details Revealed
Mayor of Kingstown is coming back for Season 4 … and sooner than you might think! The drama, which is part of the Taylor Sheridan universe on Paramount+, recently shot on location in Canada, and details about what's ahead for the gritty crime series are starting to come to light. Here's a look at everything we know about Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 so far. When will Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 premiere? Paramount+ has revealed that the series will return for its fourth season on October 26. Who will star in Mayor of Kingstown Season 4? In addition to Jeremy Renner's Kyle McLusky, the main characters who survived the events of the Season 3 finale are: Ian (Hugh Dillon), Kyle (Taylor Handley), Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa), Robert (Hamish Allan-Headley), and Evelyn (Necar Zadegan). Per Deadline, Clayton Cardenas will join the show in Season 4 as Deputy Warden Torres, the 'right-hand man' of the incoming deputy who'll take over leadership at Anchor Bay after Kareem's death. Other additions for Season 4 include Edie Falco, Lennie James, and Laura Benanti. Falco plays Anchor Bay's new prison warden, Nina Hobbs. James plays gangster Frank Moses, who's respected not just in the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan, but also beyond. And Benanti is playing a new correctional officer, Cindy Stephens. What will happen in Mayor of Kingstown Season 4? Creator Hugh Dillon confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the events of the Season 3 finale do mean that the Russian mafia storyline is coming to an end for the series, teasing that their eradication from Kingstown 'leaves a vacuum [that] will be filled.' The logline for the new season tells us, 'Mike's control over Kingstown is threatened as new players compete to fill the power vacuum left in the Russians' wake, compelling him to confront the resulting gang war and stop them from swallowing the town. Meanwhile, with those he loves in more danger than ever before, Mike must contend with a headstrong new Warden to protect his own while grappling with demons from his past.' How did Mayor of Kingstown Season 3 end? The Season 3 finale ended with a lot of major character losses. First, Kareem (Michael Beach) walked right into an ambush by the Aryans when trying to break up a scuffle in the yard with no backup — a fate he seemed to choose. Then, Evelyn told Mike that she is coming after Ian for using Charlie as a weapon against a whistleblower. She sees him as a sure means of getting to Robert, who she doesn't believe to be fit for the force (and she's right about that). Then, she decided to press charges against Kyle after he shot Robert to stop him from gunning down an innocent man who was hiding during the bridge melee. Despite how close Mike is to her, she doesn't buy into his brand of look-the-other-way-for-our-guys justice. Meanwhile, the bridge conflict saw the Crips ambush and eliminate the remaining Russians, with the help of the police department no less, so now Bunny will have rule of the roost as long as he sticks to Kingstown as his sole territory. But will he? Konstantin and Milo (Aidan Gillen) won't be a factor anymore. Milo forced Iris (Emma Laird) to shoot Konstantin if she wanted a new life, and Mike then took out Milo for his many transgressions, including taunting Mike about his mother's death. Sadly, Iris, too, is dead; although she made it onto the bus, she took too many pain pills and overdosed before arrival. How will so many calamities affect Mike's 'mayor'al status? After all, his brother's in jail for attempted murder, his best friend's under suspicion of murder, his romantic partner is the one prosecuting them both, his platonic girlfriend who he's fought so hard to protect is now dead, the warden is gone, the Aryans are still on a revenge tour, and Bunny's in charge of everything. Season 4 is going to be wild. Are there photos of Mayor Kingstown Season 4? Yes! A batch of 10 first-look photos were revealed in August, and you can check them all out right here.
