Reservoir levels stable, no flood-like situation: Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal

Chandigarh: Punjab water resources minister Barinder Kumar Goyal informed the vidhan sabha on Monday that water reservoir levels in Punjab were stable and there was currently no flood-like situation in the state. Responding to a calling attention notice moved by Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Rana Inder Pratap Singh regarding preventing flood threats in low-lying areas due to rising water levels in reservoirs, Goyal said that the state govt had implemented comprehensive arrangements to address every potential scenario. Goyal said that water levels in major reservoirs remained within safe limits as of July 10. He said that the current level at Bhakra Dam stood at 1,590.48 feet compared to 1,614.89 feet on July 10, 2023, during the floods that year. "Similarly, the current level at Pong Dam is 1,325.48 feet, which was 1,350.63 feet on July 10, 2023, during the 2023 floods. The current level at Ranjit Sagar Dam is 505.41 metres compared to 520.2 metres on July 10, 2023, during the 2023 floods," said Goyal, adding that "all three reservoirs are operating safely with ample buffer from danger levels". Rana Inder Pratap Singh, while speaking during the call attention motion asking the govt to take corrective steps to avoid floods, said, "It is a matter of urgent public importance that an increase in water levels in the dams due to heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh leads to the consequent danger of flooding in Punjab." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo He claimed that despite flagging the issue with deputy commissioners and the minister, "no concrete steps were taken, even at the sites most in need of urgent reinforcement." Rana Inder Pratap Singh, the son of Congress MLA from Kapurthala Rana Gurjeet Singh and elected as an independent MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi in the 2022 Punjab assembly elections, also claimed that there were "ongoing illegal mining activities within the embankment zones, particularly in areas where temporary structures have been erected by locals". He further said that the residents of his constituency were willing to voluntarily offer land for the construction of embankments if it helps safeguard their lives and livelihoods from future floods. Responding to this, minister Goyal, while citing the example of Gidderpindi village, said de-silting was done on govt land but private landowners were not allowing that. "People made verbal promises but don't give their lands when it actually came to constructing embankments," he added. AAP MLA from Derabassi Kuljit Singh Randhawa said Zirakpur was worst hit when the water level rose during the rains. He said the farmers should be allowed to extract soil from Ghaggar to put the same in their lands. AAP MLA representing Ghanaur, Gurlal Ghanuar, also spoke on similar lines, pitching the "proper desilting of Ghaggar as the solution to avoid floods." Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh suggested that the govt should go in for sub-soil recharge by setting up "water pumping stations" as was "happening in countries like the US". "Have you made any such proposal," he sought to know.

MP Supriya Sule wants separate authority for Hinjewadi cluster

Pune: Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Monday met Pune divisional commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar and demanded formation of a dedicated administrative authority for Hinjewadi-Maan-Marunji cluster and surrounding areas which are rapidly becoming urbanised. Sule cited severe infrastructure gaps and uncoordinated governance to back her demand. In a detailed memorandum submitted to Pulkundwar, Sule said the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park — located in her Lok Sabha constituency — is a world-class IT hub. However, it continues to face civic challenges — such as traffic congestion, poor roads, inadequate drainage, irregular electricity supply and dependence on water tankers. The state must set up a special urban development or an industrial township authority immediately to ensure focused development. The grievance redressal must be streamlined ," she said. IT representatives, who attended the meeting, said Pulkundwar directed officials to share details of blocked natural water channels — already reported to PMRDA — with IT representatives for transparency. Sule flagged critical infrastructure issues, especially in the Croma Chowk-Amsterdam Chowk area, where she said permanent Metro barricades and staircases have narrowed the 40-ft-wide road to 30 ft. "After the Metro begins operations, only two lanes will remain functional and create a bottleneck. Also, the stairs should not descend directly onto the road," she said. Sule highlighted the absence of safe pedestrian infrastructure, overflowing drains, cratered internal roads, waterlogging because of blocked natural streams and lack of timely road repairs post utility excavation. The feeder road connecting Sus to Hinjewadi remains incomplete despite being approved years ago, she added. Among other concerns raised were frequent power cuts, poor street lighting, untreated sewage from the IT park entering the Mula river and high levels of noise pollution from late-night construction. "Residents, workers and IT firms are suffering because of fragmented planning. These are not isolated issues, but part of a wider governance failure," she said, urging the state to take urgent action.

BJP MLAs protest in Jammu over compulsory Urdu for naib tehsildar posts, demand rollback

File photo (PTI) JAMMU: BJP legislators on Monday staged a protest outside the civil secretariat in Jammu, demanding revocation of a government order mandating Urdu as a compulsory language for naib tehsildar recruitment examination in Jammu and Kashmir. The MLAs arrived at the secretariat in the morning and staged a dharna, terming the order discriminatory and detrimental to the interests of Jammu's youth. Carrying placards highlighting injustice against Jammu's youth, Dogras and other official languages of the Union Territory, they raised slogans against the government and CM Omar Abdullah, accusing his party, National Conference, of trying to create unrest in the region. Speaking to the media, Sunil Sharma said this policy amounted to grave injustice against deserving candidates who are otherwise qualified but are being excluded based on language preference. 'This is not just about language; it's about rights, opportunities and equal treatment. Why should proficiency in Urdu be made mandatory when there are several other official languages in J&K?' he asked. Former minister Sham Lal Sharma said: 'Kashmir-centric parties, particularly NC, have been discriminating against the Jammu region for decades. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Invest in SALIK shares today and be part of the city's growth سالك Learn More Undo This is a fresh example of it.' Issuing such an order was a clear attempt to deny jobs to Jammu's youth, he alleged. 'We are holding protests to get it revoked. Youth are already on the streets protesting. The matter has been brought to the notice of the lieutenant governor as well, and memorandums have been submitted through deputy commissioners, but nothing has been done so far,' he said. Sharma said 14 BJP MLAs had even met CM Omar on the issue. 'His approach was positive, but no action has been taken yet, and tomorrow is the last day to apply for the posts. They are trying to create unrest in Jammu and are forcing us to go on agitation,' he added. 'We are warning the government not to play with the sentiments of the people of Jammu, who are fed up with the discriminatory attitude of Kashmir-centric rulers,' he said.
