Lanarkshire theatre group Ups and Downs celebrate Pride of Scotland award
A much-loved Lanarkshire theatre company is celebrating after earning a prestigious Pride of Scotland award.
Ups and Downs, made up of young people with Down's syndrome and their siblings, was awarded the inaugural inspiration category prize sponsored by P&O Cruises at the glittering annual awards ceremony in Glasgow – where members then 'stole the show' with their impressive rendition of The Greatest Showman hit This Is Me.
The group's representatives were given a standing ovation from a capacity audience packed with celebrities from across Scotland as they received their glittering trophy from Coronation Street actor Liam Bairstow, Strictly Come Dancing star Dr Punam Krishan and Wellerman singer Nathan Evans, of Airdrie.
Now the group is planning a special celebration at Hamilton racecourse later this month to mark their achievement and to be able to celebrate with all of the organisation's members and families.
Ups and Downs are celebrating the group's 30th anniversary in 2025, staging their special annual show to mark the milestone at Hamilton town house in March.
They also have an exciting engagement in the diary for later in the year, as group patron Calum Beattie has invited the Ups and Downs performers to join him on stage by opening for him at his forthcoming show at the Hydro in Glasgow.
Guests at the Pride of Scotland awards ceremony saw a special video showcasing the group's busy and fun rehearsals, with performers and their families speaking about the close-knit atmosphere, support among members and their loved ones and 'joyful' times together – with long-standing member Joanne Toner saying: 'I treat my Ups and Downs peers as family.'
The group was first formed by three music teachers who had noted recognised that young people with Down's syndrome in the schools where they worked had a particular musicality and love for theatre; and now more than 70 young people plus their siblings come together for weekly rehearsals to show their creative talents and get set for their much-anticipated annual shows.
Winning members were interviewed on stage at the awards event in Glasgow by Scots stars Elaine C Smith and Sanjeev Kohli – and group member Ellis Leggatt, 26, told them: 'Ups and Downs have been the most amazing friends of mine for 20 years and it's been so much fun.'
He has been involved with the group since the age of five and mum Lorna, who now serves as club president, added: 'Rehearsals are the most uplifting thing and when you come to see the show it is the best feelgood factor you could hope to have.
'The joy that Ups and Downs are capable of spreading, and the idea that the rest of Scotland can get to hear about us and we can spread that joy, is just incredible.
'Young people with Down's syndrome can be funny, frail, musical, mischievous, wilful and witty just like everyone else. They're individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, hopes and dreams and, above all, they love to sing and dance – Ups and Downs allows them to show off their passion and they thrive on it.'
The inspiration award winners' performance of This Is Me at the awards ceremony was described as 'spellbinding' and , fittingly, 'one of the most uplifting moments of the night'; while Lanarkshire musician Nathan said: 'When they sang everyone in the room got goosebumps.'
Calling Ups and Downs 'amazing', he added: 'They are pure joy to watch; I had a lump in my throat. Their enthusiasm and passion is absolutely incredible.'
Actor Liam said he was 'so honoured' to present the group with their Pride of Scotland award, while Dr Punam told members: 'Words that come to me are talent, heart, sparkle, joy – you are all so inspiraitonal. You've been lighting up the stage, lighting up lives and Scotland is so proud of all of you.'

Helen Flanagan opens up on mum guilt as she admits to 'not being a team' with Scott Sinclair
The former Coronation Street star shared a candid post about her relationship with each of her three kids who she shares with former Celtic star Scott Sinclair. Helen Flanagan has opened up about her tough 'mum guilt' as she candidly discussed 'not being a team' with her ex Scott Sinclair, who she co-parents her three kids with. The former Corrie star shares children Matilda, nine, Delilah, six and Charlie, four, with the former Celtic star, who she was previously engaged to but split from in July 2022. Helen has always been very open and honest about the struggles she has faced with being a single parent. In an emotional new Instagram post, the 34-year-old reflected on some of her favourite memories with her kids from this year so far as she posted a series of sweet videos and snaps with her little ones. She captioned the heartfelt post: "Looked back at some of my favourite times with the kids this year. Found motherhood hard recently, I've felt overwhelmed and stressed the majority of the time and I want to get back to when I'm present and I'm really in it and I'm really enjoying it. "I always wanted to be a mum. I get mum guilt with Matilda as I feel like I'm always preoccupied with her brother, I can't give her the energy that I want to give her and I feel like she always sees me at my worst. "I also feel like she needs calm which I can never be. Delilah, I feel like I'm getting it right with her and I feel like our bond is tight, so that's something not to beat myself up about. Charlie, I could pull my hair out sometimes, I feel like I've got the male version of me. "Co parenting is hard and not being a team together and not being able to talk about your anxieties and worries for the kids. I suppose you can only do your best and be kind to yourself but I wanted these on my grid for me as they make my soul happy." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! After candidly opening up about how she has individual mothering struggles with each child, fans rushed to the comments to offer their support and reassurance. One wrote: "You've got three gorgeous, happy kids there so you're definitely doing something right! Don't be so hard on yourself, being a parent is tough but you've got this. One step at a time." A second commented: "Juggling three kids is a super power I'm sure. U got this strong momma." A third replied, referring to Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, which Helen suffers from. PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome characterised by intense emotional and physical symptoms that significantly disrupt daily life. The fan said: "You're a fab mummy to your little beauties and your kids always look so happy. I have PMDD too and it's awful. Can really make you feel so anxious but honestly, you're doing great." Another mother, who found Helen's post relatable, wrote: "So relatable to read this has made me feel so much better as it's exactly how I feel on my own with my babies , like my eldest doesn't always get the best of me , constantly trying to spilt yourself, your time , your energy, leaving nothing for yourself and still feeling guilty." Helen and Scott were together for 13 years before they split in the summer of 2022. The actress, who has been very open about her mental health in the past, was diagnosed with psychosis last year. Helen suffered an episode on New Year's 2024 during a trip to Bali with the kids after she took a bad reaction to her ADHD medication. Reflecting on that time in her life earlier this year, Helen devastatingly shared how she thought her kids would have been better off without her. Helen has had another rough couple of months after splitting with her ex-boyfriend Robbie Talbot in May. The pair dated for around a year before they called it quits. Meanwhile, Scott has since moved on with his new partner Lauren Davies, who he has been dating since 2024.

Coronation Street spoiler 'confirms' sad exit from ITV soap 19 years after debut
Coronation Street spoilers appear to confirm the exit storyline for one character, as they prepare to bow out of the ITV soap after being born on the show in 2009 It's the beginning of the end for one Coronation Street character it seems, as spoilers tease an exit is fast approaching. One character is set to bow out of the ITV soap this year, with the actor playing the role confirming this. But now new details appear to confirm the departure and that it will be soon. Corrie spoilers tease the moment Aadi Alahan's disastrous actions and crimes catch up with him next week. The son of Dev Alahan is struggling with recent events, knocking back the booze. His debt, the theft from his family in a staged robbery and the fact his drug-use led to Lauren Bolton's injuries after the house party all lead to him spiralling. Actor Adam Hussain confirmed not so long ago he was leaving the role, and with that we knew Aadi would depart at some point. Since then the character's life has begun to fall apart, with his relationship with Lauren built on lies, and his stepmother Bernie Winter covering up his deceit from the family, and trying to help him claw back the money he owes. Things reach a head next week, with spoilers revealing a turning point. Amid an incident at Dev and Bernie's wedding that sees Bernie rushed to hospital and in a bad way, Aadi hits the booze. At this point his relative Aunty Rani has arrived, and after offering funds towards the wedding she is keen to keep track of what's being spent. Aadi panics, knowing full well he's trying to get things on the cheap to make savings to get the money back. When everything kicks off with Bernie, it's left unknown what happens next - but the family are all called to the hospital. In the following episode, it all gets too much and he hits the bottle. He ends up falling and hitting his head after an incident with Theo Silverton, while it's clear Aadi is hitting rock bottom. As Lauren grows concerned for her new man, it becomes apparent he is avoiding her unable to handle the guilt. So when she heads off to find him and tracks him down, nothing can prepare her for what he's about to reveal. Aadi decides he can't lie anymore, and decides to tell Lauren all about the LSD and how it was his drink laced with the drug that she drank, leading to her being seriously injured. A picture shows Lauren looking horrified but how will she react to Aadi's lies? Soon enough Aadi decides the truth needs to be shared, and he braces himself to reveal all to dad Dev and his family too. Viewers will have to tune in to find out hoe he reacts to this, and what this means for Aadi ahead of his exit from the show. Might Aadi face trouble for what happened? Might he end up fleeing, or will he decide to move away and have a fresh start? All will be revealed soon. Aadi has been on the show since 2009, with Sunita welcoming him and his twin sister Asha on the show - and soon, after 19 years, the character will be heading off.
