Panaji, Aug 7 (PTI) The Goa government on Thursday ruled out enacting a separate law to protect widows from various forms of discrimination and told the assembly existing support mechanisms are adequate to deal with such practices.
The government has not received any representations about widow discrimination in the state, said Women and Child Development Minister Vishwajit Rane.
In a written reply tabled in the house to a starred question by MLAs Altone D'Costa, Carlos Ferreira, and Yuri Alemao, the minister informed that no memorandums, appeals, or letters have been received by the government regarding widow discrimination, abuse, or isolation in the state.
Responding to the legislators' query about steps taken to end unjust funeral-related customs targeting women, Rane pointed out that no such cases have been reported so far in Goa.
Issues related to widow abuse or discrimination can be addressed through the dedicated women helpline (181) under the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and through the network of One Stop Centres (OSCs) set up across the state, he told the house.
'The helpline offers immediate and emergency response to women affected by violence, including widows facing discrimination," the reply stated.
'One Stop Centres provide integrated support, including psychological, legal, and medical aid, and act as a single point of contact for women seeking help," Rane maintained.
Existing mechanisms are adequate to deal with cases of widow abuse or discrimination and there was no need for a new law to address such issues, the minister opined. PTI RPS RSY

PM to inaugurate flats for MPs on Monday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate a 27-storey apartment of 184 newly constructed flats for members of Parliament (MP) at Baba Kharak Singh Marg in central Delhi's Connaught Place on Monday morning. The complex has 184 Type-VII flats, each with a carpet area of 5,000 square feet. (PTI) Officials said the PM will also plant a Sindoor sapling (bixa orellana) at the residential complex and interact with the construction workers of the project. The inauguration event will start at 10am on Monday. A senior traffic police official said the traffic movement will be briefly affected in the area around the Gol Dak Khana during the entry and exit of the convoy. No large scale diversions are planned, the officer said. The complex has 184 Type-VII flats, each with a carpet area of 5,000 square feet, five bedrooms, dedicated office spaces for MPs and their assistants, and two additional rooms for support staff. Amenities will include power backup, firefighting systems, integrated structural safety features, and an energy-efficient green building design. 'Each residential unit offers ample space for both residential and official functions. The inclusion of dedicated areas for offices, staff accommodation, and a community centre will support MPs in fulfilling their responsibilities as public representatives,' an official government statement said. 'Incorporating green technology, the project adheres to the standards of the GRIHA 3-star rating and complies with the National Building Code (NBC) 2016. These environmentally sustainable features are expected to contribute to energy conservation, renewable energy generation, and effective waste management,' the statement added. Work on the project was completed within 30 months, officials said. 'Use of advanced construction technology — monolithic concrete with aluminium shuttering — enabled timely completion of the project while ensuring structural durability,' the statement said. The buildings are said to be earthquake-resistant and a comprehensive and robust security system has also been implemented. Other common amenities will include a two-level underground parking facility for 500 vehicles, a community centre, and shops to cater to daily requirements within the premises. The project cost was approximately ₹550 crore and all buildings are expected to have a shelf life of 100 years. The government has stated that the development of the project was necessitated due to shortage of adequate housing for MPs. 'Owing to the limited availability of land, there has been a sustained emphasis on vertical housing developments aimed at optimizing land use and minimizing maintenance costs. This residential complex, situated at BKS Marg, New Delhi, offers significant locational advantages for the MPs, particularly due to its proximity to the Parliament house complex,' the report mentioned.

Union minister, J&K LG, dy CM thank PM Modi for another Vande Bharat train

Union minister Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha and deputy chief minister Surinder Choudhary thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday for sanctioning a Vande Bharat train to link the holy towns of Katra and Amritsar, and said the transport infrastructure, particularly in the railways, has witnessed unprecedented growth in the Union territory over the last 11 years. A security official stands guard outside a Vande Bharat Express train, which was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at Katra Railway station, in Reasi district on Sunday. (PTI) In Bengaluru, the PM on Sunday flagged off three Vande Bharat Express trains -- from Bengaluru to Belagavi, from Punjab's Amritsar to Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra in Jammu and Kashmir and from Nagpur (Ajni) to Pune. 'This (Katra-Amritsar) is the fourth Vande Bharat Express train gifted to Jammu and Kashmir by PM Modi, who has given top priority to this region ever since taking the reins of the government in 2014.... I do not know if there is any other railway station in the country where four Vande Bharat trains stop,' Singh told reporters on board the newly-launched train. He congratulated the people of Jammu for the new train and said when Modi took over as the PM in 2014, the railway project to connect Kashmir with the rest of the country was almost abandoned. The LG thanked the PM for the Vande Bharat train between Amritsar and Katra. 'Grateful to PM Modi for flagging off Vande Bharat Train between Amritsar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Station. J&K's transport infrastructure, particularly in railways, has witnessed unprecedented growth under the leadership of PM. New Vande Bharat Train will ensure ease of travel for devotees of Mata Vaishno Devi and spur the growth momentum of the local economy,' he said in a post on X. Referring to the first freight train reaching the Anantnag station in south Kashmir from Punjab on Saturday, Sinha said it marks a significant milestone in the Kashmir valley's transport infrastructure and trade. Addressing the gathering before the flag-off ceremony at the Katra railway station, deputy chief minister Choudhary lauded Modi for making the dream of railway connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country a reality. 'We are lucky to witness the dreams that our elders saw getting fulfilled under the leadership of Modi. Our PM and chief minister Omar Abdullah flagged off the first train from Katra to Kashmir (on June 6) -- a historic moment as many were of the opinion that the train could never reach Kashmir, which was infamous for terror activities. But the region has witnessed fast development,' he said. He welcomed the launch of the new Vande Bharat train service between Katra and Amritsar and said it is a proud moment for people as the train is going to connect two revered shrines -- the Vaishno Devi temple and the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
