Ranking every Big Ten football 2026 recruiting class by average player rating (July 6)

USA Today9 hours ago
The class of 2026 recruiting rankings continue to finalize with each passing week. With the June official visit schedule now complete, most programs have the core of their class committed. Commitments over the coming months will slow to a trickle, those updates only mildly affecting the overall team rankings.
Those rankings did receive a major shift earlier this week when Oregon added five-star interior offensive lineman Immanuel Iheanacho. Iheanacho is the Ducks' third five-star commitment in the class. His addition sent the Ducks' relatively small class of 14 commitments up near the nation's top 10. When the cycle concludes later this year, none should be surprised if Oregon approaches the top five.
Notably, Oregon currently boasts the Big Ten's best average player rating (93.15). While different from 247Sports' national team rankings, which give significant weight to commit volume, average player rating is an important metric to use when comparing the conference's top-ranked groups.
With that, here is Oregon, Wisconsin and every Big Ten recruiting class of 2026 ordered by average player rating, plus where each falls on 247Sports' current national team rankings.

BTN analyst shares positive remarks on Michigan State hoops entering next season

One Big Ten Network basketball analyst seems to be pretty high on the Spartans heading into next season. Former Purdue Boilermaker and current Big Ten Network analyst Rapheal Davis shared some positive remarks on the Spartans for next season this week. Davis took to social media platform X to note he's expecting big things from Coen Carr, Jeremy Fears Jr. and Carson Cooper this upcoming season. Here's the exact post on X from Davis: This is the first time this offseason that Davis has provided positive insight on the Spartans from his point of view. He recently was praising the growth he was hearing for Carr and has also previously said he's expecting a breakout season for Fears. Michigan State is coming off a Big Ten championship winning season, where they also reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans, though, lost a number of key contributors off last year's team, including Jaden Akins, Jase Richardson and Tre Holloman. It's clear Davis is high on Michigan State entering next season and would assume he'd consider them a solid value pick to make some noise in the Big Ten. It'll be interesting to see if Carr, Fears and Cooper can live up to this hype this season, and truly elevate their game to lead the Spartans to another strong year on the hardwood. Will Riley: Wizards sign 21st overall pick to rookie scale contract

Former Illinois forward Will Riley, the 21st pick in the 2025 NBA draft, signed his rookie-scale contract with the Washington Wizards on Sunday, according to the official NBA transaction report. Riley was the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year after averaging 12.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists on 43.2% shooting from the field as a freshman. He logged nine starts, finishing third on the team in scoring after registering six 20-point performances. He will make $3,512,520 next season, according to Spotrac. The 6-foot-8 standout helped Illinois reach the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight year this past season as the sixth seed. He set a freshman program record with 22 points and four assists on March 21 in a win over Xavier in the first round. Riley was projected to be a first-round pick because of his size, scoring potential and ability as a passer. He was also able to create separation for himself, with his array of dribble moves, jab steps and step-backs on the perimeter. The Canadian also proved a capable floor spacer, despite shooting 32.6% on 4.1 attempts per game from beyond the arc. He worked extensively on his shot throughout the predraft process and will look to showcase it with the Wizards next season. Riley is expected to suit up for the Wizards for at least five games in the NBA Summer League, beginning on Friday against the Phoenix Suns (9 p.m. EDT, ESPN).

NHL Insider Reveals Big Update on Ducks' Mason McTavish

NHL Insider Reveals Big Update on Ducks' Mason McTavish originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Anaheim Ducks entered the offseason looking to make some big changes to the roster. While the team has added some nice pieces, they also missed out on adding any of the big three free agents on the market. Advertisement Despite being armed with a lot of cap space, Anaheim wasn't able to close the deal. The Ducks did sign Mikael Granlund, who should help provide some needed offensive spark to this team. But the Ducks also have a few restricted free agents of their own to still deal with. Both Mason McTavish and Lukas Dostal remain on the open market, and there have been all sorts of rumors that Anaheim could let other teams go after them. The two players have been key figures for Anaheim, so the timing is a little weird. But according to NHL insider Jeff Marek, both McTavish and Dostal could be subject to getting offer sheets from teams. Advertisement If the Ducks were to let either player walk, it would be terrible asset management. But in all likelihood, both players will be back with Anaheim since they can match any offer that comes in. Dostal is likely to be the starting goalie for the Ducks this season after the team traded away John Gibson. The goalie proved himself last year, and Anaheim has been excited to see what he could do as the full-time starter. As for McTavish, it seems strange that Anaheim would give up on him so soon. The former third overall pick scored 22 goals and 30 assists for the Ducks this past season. McTavish has been subject to rumors, but the Ducks do value him. However, this is a strange situation, and it will be interesting to see how Anaheim plays this moving forward.
