Wes Anderson Teases Next Project With Richard Ayoade & Roman Coppola

Yahoo20-05-2025
Wes Anderson largely kept tightlipped about his next feature project other than to say it does 'have a darkness.' He's collaborating with Roman Coppola again, who the filmmaker always co-writes with, as well as The Phoenician Scheme star Richard Ayoade on the next title.
Anderson didn't specify whether Ayoade was starring and/or co-writing. Ayoade starred in two Roald Dahl short adaptations of Anderson's: Oscar winner The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and The Rat Catcher. Ayoade plays Sergio in Phoenician Scheme, which is Anderson's fourth pic to premiere in Competition at Cannes.

Asked today at the Cannes presser which movie he'd be more apt to make a sequel of from his canon, Anderson responded with Life Aquatic. Bill Murray, who makes a cameo as God in Phoenician Scheme and who Anderson himself referred to as 'God' at the premiere Sunday night, was sitting in the press seats today.
'Are you in, Bill Murray?' asked the moderator, to which the Rushmore star gave a thumbs-up.
The Phoenician Scheme opens on May 30 in NYC and LA with a wide break on June 6. The pic reps Anderson's third with Focus Features after Asteroid City and Moonrise Kingdom.

Spike Lee Walks Back Comment That ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Will Be His Last Film With Denzel Washington: 'I Got My Mind Right'

Spike Lee made headlines at Cannes this year when premiering his new film Highest 2 Lowest and announcing that it would likely be his last team-up with frequent collaborator Denzel Washington. 'I think this is it — five,' Lee told reporters of his and Washington's number of films together. 'He's been talking about retirement, even though he's just done another deal. Five films together, they stand up.' 'I said that before, but I got my mind right,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. 'I'm open to work with Denzel Washington and this not be the last film of the dynamic duo, D and Lee.' Highest 2 Lowest is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film High and Low and sees a powerful music mogul (Washington) targeted by a ransom plot and put in a life-or-death moral dilemma. A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Elijah Wright, Wendell Pierce and Ice Spice also appear in the film. 'I became a student of Akira Kurosawa at NYU's graduate film school — that's where I saw Rashomon, that's where I saw many of Samurai films, that's where I saw High and Low,' Lee recalled, noting that Washington 'had gotten the property and he sent it to me; he said, 'Spike read the script. If you like, let's go.' I read it right away, called him up, I think the next day and said, 'Let's go.' It happened like that.' The famed filmmaker also weighed in on the film's tagline 'All Money Ain't Good Money,' saying, 'We know what that is and we know that sometimes in life we have to make that choice. And hopefully we make the right choice.' Highest 2 Lowest hits theaters on Friday and starts streaming on Apple TV+ on Sept. 5. Neha Joy contributed to this report. Leonardo DiCaprio reveals passing on this role as his 'biggest regret'

Leonardo DiCaprio not only feels younger than his current age of 50, but he also pines for a role he passed on when he was younger: Dirk Diggler. The Oscar-winning actor told Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of the 1997 film "Boogie Nights," his "biggest regret" is not doing that film with Anderson. The actor had a good excuse in that he had already committed to the role of Jack Dawson in "Titanic," which became a blockbuster when it hit theaters the same year. DiCaprio does star in Anderson's newest film, "One Battle After Another," which hits theaters Sept. 26. A discussion between the two appears in the September issue of Esquire. What to watch: Over 30 years after its debut, this classic film is dominating streaming When Anderson, whose other films include "Licorice Pizza" and "Phantom Thread," asked DiCaprio if he had any career regrets, the actor said, according to the Esquire article, "I'll say it even though you're here: My biggest regret is not doing 'Boogie Nights.' It was a profound movie of my generation. I can't imagine anyone but Mark (Wahlberg) in it. When I finally got to see that movie, I just thought it was a masterpiece. It's ironic that you're the person asking that question, but it's true." In the film, Wahlberg's role is that of Diggler, who becomes a porn star in the 1970s adult film industry. In a commentary track that appears on the DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases of the film, Anderson said he wanted Wahlberg or DiCaprio to play Diggler after seeing their performances in "The Basketball Diaries," notes movie blog Film School Rejects. Also in the Esquire interview, DiCaprio, who has been known to date much younger women, told Anderson he felt like he was 32 years old and "turned emotionally 35 last year." In the upcoming film, "One Battle After Another," DiCaprio plays a one-time revolutionary faced with rescuing his daughter, who has been captured by an alt-right group. Also appearing in the film are Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro. The film is his and Anderson's first together. "I've been wanting to work with you – Paul – for something like 20 years now, and I loved this idea of the washed-up revolutionary trying to erase his past and disappear and try and live some sort of normal life raising his daughter," DiCaprio told Anderson in their discussion. Discussing DiCaprio's role in the film, Anderson says, "He is a nice character, someone who starts out wanting to change the world on the far left but gets increasingly cranky and closed off as he gets older."
