Volkswagen to discontinue its flagship Touareg SUV after 24 years
Volkswagen Touareg, the flagship premium big SUV from the German car manufacturer, is looking at the end of its road. The auto OEM is reportedly planning to pull the plug on the SUV after 24 years of production. The carmaker is planning to shelve the Volkswagen Touareg SUV by the end of 2026. British automotive publication Autocar UK has reported that Volkswagen replaced the Touareg SUV with the Atlas in the US, one of the key global markets for the automobile brand, owing to the fact that the OEM has not sold the Touareg in the country since 2017. According to the publication, Volkswagen does not have a model planned as a direct successor for the Touareg, which hints that the company is focusing on building a portfolio of affordable models for cost-conscious consumers. The SUV came as the result of a collaboration between Volkswagen and its subsidiaries, like Porsche and Audi, that also spawned the Cayenne and Q7, respectively. Volkswagen designed the Touareg SUV, along with the Phaeton, at the time. The SUV was dubbed a premium product that elevated the brand into the luxury car segment. The Phaeton didn't last long, but the Touareg stuck around until the mid-2010s in some of the key markets, albeit with dwindling sales. Despite its focus on affordable models, Volkswagen isn't abandoning buyers in Europe who want something big. The company introduced the Tayron last October, which is available in two- and three-row configurations and is related to the Tiguan. Meanwhile, Volkswagen Touareg's discontinuation is going to be the end of an era for the brand. The SUV remained a bold product that featured a range of powertrains, including a V10 diesel engine. Even with the heavy camo, some of the design elements can be spotted. At the front, updates should involve a new grille and bumper design, which should make the Taigun slightly more aggressive. The headlamps might get updated slightly, with perhaps new LED components. The rear, though covered heavily, gives the impression of revised tail lamps—potentially with joined LED elements like we have on international Volkswagen cars. Inside, there haven't been any spy photos so far, but it's reasonable to expect the facelifted Taigun to have some minor interior revisions. Volkswagen may update the dashboard design, add some new materials or colors, and maybe include some additional connected car features in order to keep up with the tech-conscious competition. At the sides, there may be an updated set of alloy wheels. Also Read : Volkswagen Taigun facelift spotted ahead of launch Mechanically, however, the facelift is not expected to change much. The Taigun will presumably carry on with the existing engine variants—a 1.0-litre TSI and a 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol—coupled with manual and automatic transmission options. Both engines are famous for their punchy delivery, something that Volkswagen won't probably fiddle with. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India. First Published Date:

Govt slashes security testing fees by 95% to boost local telecom manufacturing
Synopsis The telecom department has slashed security evaluation fees for telecom and ICT products by up to 95%, capping charges at Rs 50,000. This move aims to ease costs for domestic manufacturers and boost R&D. It benefits firms like Ericsson, Nokia, VVDN, and Dixon. Government R&D bodies are exempt from fees until March 2028 to spur innovation. iStock The telecom department Monday sharply slashed security evaluation fees for telecom and ICT products in a bid to make the security certification process more affordable for domestic evaluation fees were reduced by as much as 95% which previously ranged from Rs 2-3.5 lakh depending on the equipment category. Under the revised structure, the maximum testing certification labs can charge is Rs 50,000, from an earlier Rs 3.5 lakh. This will significantly reduce financial strain on telecom and ICT manufacturers. The move is expected to positively impact the operations of Ericsson, Nokia, Cisco, and telecom equipment manufacturers such as VVDN and Dixon Technologies, said analysts. 'This is a good step to spur innovation among local players. Earlier, each new product being developed locally had to be tested. With the fees rationalised, it becomes cheaper for us to innovate in R&D,' said Ashok Gupta, chairman, Optiemus Infracom, which makes telecom products including routers and set-top-boxes. Currently, products such as IP routers, Wi-Fi CPEs, and 5G Core SMF are under mandatory security testing, while Optical Line Terminals and Optical Networking Terminals are subject to voluntary certification. Gupta added that the security testing fees are added as part of the costs billed by the contract manufacturer to its customers, which was then passed down to the end-customer. However, security testing fees are only paid once when developing the product, and does not typically have a significant impact on final pricing, he government has also exempted security test evaluation fees for its R&D institutes such as CDOT and CDAC until March 31, 2028 as part of a wider effort to encourage innovation in public sector research.'This fee reduction is expected to bolster the competitiveness of Indian telecom manufacturers, stimulate local innovation, and provide a more straightforward pathway to market entry for both domestic and international Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs),' the ministry of communications said in a statement.
