‘Longer waits, manual overrides': Ex-top cop sparks debate on Bengaluru's new AI traffic signals
BJP leader and former Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Wednesday condemned the use of artificial intelligence-powered traffic signals in the city, terming them 'counter productive'.
He took to social media site X and posted that the new AI-powered traffic signals in Bengaluru are causing longer waits and making commutes worse. Manual overrides are also becoming a common occurrence, he said. Rao, who first joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and switched to the BJP later, added that the "smart" electric meters in auto rickshaws are no better.

'The New signals with AI in Bengaluru seems to be counter productive. Longer waiting time..!! Manual intervention is going on. Journey time is taking longer. Similar is the experience with Smart Electrical Meters, again manual intervention. Who in the Government is doing this,' he wrote.

He also shared a video of an auto rickshaw driver who echoed the sentiments and said the old signals were better for daily commutes. The post quickly garnered attention online, and accumulated over 13,000 views at the time this article is being written.
It also triggered a discussion on Bengaluru's never-ending traffic woes, with a social media user writing, 'Japanese have probably designed the algorithms considering lane discipline and roads of Japan . Tech is not translating to the chaos of our city.'

'VAC signals are a farce, they have set a fixed timing for pedestrians and it defeats the very purpose of vehicle authentication, some signals turn red after 15 seconds even though a long pile up is there,' another posted.
"The Japanese "Moderato" AI traffic signals were just a huge waste of money! Instead of that, govt must've just speeded up metro construction," a user said.

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) Thursday wrote to Bihar's Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) amid the controversy over RJD chief Lalu Prasad allegedly disrespecting Dr B R Ambedkar's portrait. The letter dated June 19, signed by NCSC Joint Secretary H Kam Suanthang, said that it came to the commission's notice from reports that Lalu Prasad had insulted Dr Ambedkar's photo on June 11, during his 78th birthday celebrations. The Commission has directed the state's top officials 'to submit a report on action taken within 15 days', warning that failure to respond could result in 'summons under constitutional powers granted by Article 338'. The controversy erupted after a video from Lalu's birthday celebration went viral, showing a party supporter allegedly placing Dr Ambedkar's portrait near Lalu's feet. On June 13, the Bihar State Commission for Scheduled Castes had already issued a notice referenced to the video, asking Lalu to 'explain his side within 15 days'. The state commission said that 'failure to respond would be interpreted as intentional disrespect' and will lead to 'registration of a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act'. The ruling BJP and NDA allies criticised the incident, and accused Lalu of 'insulting the architect of the Constitution' and 'hurting Dalit sentiments'. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary had called it an 'unpardonable insult'. Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, LJP (Ram Vilas) MP from Samastipur Sambhavi Choudhary, and other NDA leaders also said that the act was 'disrespecting'and 'insulting' to Dalits. BJP leaders have amplified the issue on social media and demanded a public apology from the RJD founder. Meanwhile, the RJD had dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, with party spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari claiming the video is being 'misrepresented to polarise voters and malign Lalu's image before the polls'.

The party said that Tamil Nadu's development through projects and schemes were being hindered at every step. The campaign was conducted by CPM cadres at 10 places on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. In his inaugural address on Wednesday, MP Su Venkatesan charged the central govt and BJP with deliberately stalling several developmental projects, either temporarily or indefinitely. BJP accuses Trinamool of ‘booth jam, rigging' in Kaliganj bypoll; voting continues amidst rain
In West Bengal's Kaliganj, one of the five Assembly Constituencies across the country, which went to bye-election on Thursday (June 19, 2025), allegations flew thick and fast. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Ashish Ghosh, alleged that polling officials deliberately marked with ink on his middle finger instead of the customary index finger. 'This was done in a pre-planned manner. Initially, they did not put ink on my finger. Then they did, after I went back for it. But before I could say anything, they put the ink on my middle finger. This was premeditated,' Mr. Ghosh alleged after he cast his vote in a booth at Debgram in Kaliganj. The bye-election to the Kaliganj seat in Nadia district was necessitated after the passing of Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed on February 2. The seat saw a three-pronged contest with Mr. Ahmed's daughter Alifa Ahmed as the Trinamool candidate, Ashish Ghosh for the BJP, and Kalbiluddin Sheikh of the Congress, who fought in alliance with the Left front, in the fray. On Thursday (June 19, 2025), the BJP accused the Trinamool of 'booth capturing' at multiple places in Kaliganj. 'The Trinamool did not allow our polling agents in two booths. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari took to social media to accuse the Trinamool Congress of displaying 'regional bias' and an 'anti-Gujarati mindset' in its letter to the Chief Election Commissioner dated June 18, 2025, regarding the selection of a Gujarat-based webcasting agency for polling in the Kaliganj constituency.
