Security upgraded for Tejashwi, Samrat and others ahead of Bihar polls

The Hindu4 hours ago
Ahead of the assembly election, the Bihar government has upgraded the security cover of six leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav.
The Home Department (Special Branch) issued the notification on August 9, however it was shared to the media on Monday (August 11, 2025).
Special Secretary of Home Department K. Suhita Anupam has written a letter to the Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) to make the arrangement for security after the decision was taken in the meeting of the State Security Committee on August 1, 2025.
The security cover of two MPs has also been upgraded, which includes Purnia Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav and Araria MP Pradeep Kumar Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The list also includes two lawmakers from the ruling Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] - MLA Gyanendra Kumar Singh Gyanu representing Barh assembly constituency and MLC Neeraj Kumar.
According to the notification, BJP leader Mr. Choudhary will be now covered under 'Z+' along with Advanced Security Liaison (ASL). Similarly, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Mr. Tejashwi has been given 'Z' category security cover.
'Threats to life'
Last month during the Monsoon Session, Rabri Devi, former Chief Minister of Bihar had raised concern over the security of her son Tejashwi Yadav claiming four attempts were made to assassinate him. She had accused the ruling BJP and JD(U) claiming that the life of the former Deputy Chief Minister was under severe threat and his security cover should be reviewed or enhanced.
Last month, Tej Pratap Yadav, the MLA and former minister who has been expelled from the RJD for six years had said that his life was in danger and demanded more security from the State government. However, his name does not figure in the list.
The security cover of Pappu Yadav, Mr. Singh and Mr. Gyanu have been upgraded to 'Y+', whereas Mr. Kumar is now entitled to 'Y' category security.
A few months back, Pappu Yadav claimed that he had received a death threat call in the name of the gangster Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Later, police arrested that person and clarified that no connection was made to the notorious gangster.
A senior officer in the special branch said that the decision has been taken, keeping the upcoming assembly election in mind, as these leaders would be taking part in several public meetings during the campaign.

Khar H-West ward office to get 9.5cr central AC

Mumbai: Barely four years after it was inaugurated, the H-West ward office in Khar is slated for a fully centralised air-conditioning, with ceiling unit boxes already stacked on the premises. The upgrade at a cost Rs 9.5 crore could push electricity bills to Rs 2 lakh a month at the office. A civic official confirmed the proposal was tabled by the local ward office itself, claiming that there was a ventilation issue. It may be recalled that the H-West ward office was based out of municipal premises on St Martin Road, behind Bandra police station in Bandra West. In May 2021, during the pandemic, the ward office started operating from the new location in Khar, with an official inauguration taking place in Aug 2021 by the then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. After this, the old office in Bandra was converted into a vaccination centre. He said poor planning left the building with poor ventilation. "Hopefully, this cool comfort for officials will somehow bring a warmer, better experience for the common Mumbaikar," he said, adding while every staff member in H-West will sit in AC, in other wards the staff will not get the same treatment. "Why this kind of cherry-picking? This should have been factored in when the building was being constructed, only if at all they wanted to do it," said Zakaria. The H-West ward office had AC cabins for the assistant municipal commissioner and deputy municipal commissioner, while clerical staff had non-AC offices. Assistant municipal commissioner of H-West ward, Dinesh Pallewad, said the work is being done with all sanctions in place. "Sanctions from the central purchase department (CPD) and mechanical and electrical department (M&E) have been obtained," he said. It may be noted other administrative ward offices in the city and suburbs don't have such centralised AC. Former BJP corporator from the ward, Swapna Mhatre, said there should be no problem with the centralised AC. "Today, every corporate office has similar centralised AC, so why shouldn't civic staff working for the public be allowed to operate in air-conditioned offices?" said Mhatre. Govt scared after Rahul Gandhi's revelations, EC must respond: Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda

Chandigarh: Former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Monday said the BJP govt is scared by the revelations of fake voters made by the leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi. He added that this fear is why the govt is trying to suppress peaceful protests by the opposition. "The way police detained opposition leaders who marched to the Election Commission office on Monday clearly shows that the govt has abandoned accountability and has resorted to dictatorship. Congress strongly condemns this undemocratic action," Hooda stated. Responding to questions from journalists in Delhi, Hooda said Rahul Gandhi revealed fake voters with proper evidence. "It was the responsibility of the Election Commission to answer it with facts, but the commission is busy threatening the complainant instead," he added. Hooda said the Election Commission is completely working as a part of the BJP govt. "The commission is now issuing notices and asking Rahul Gandhi for answers, instead it should answer how so many fake votes were added to the voter list. This is a clear attempt to divert attention from the real issue," he said, adding that the commission should explain how the election results of the entire country, including Maharashtra and Haryana, came against the wishes of the people. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologist: Just Add 1 Drop Of This Household Item To Any Dark Spot And Wait 3 Minutes Undo He said it is clear from the results of Haryana that the public opinion was cheated here. "Rahul Gandhi has also mentioned Haryana in his disclosure. Everyone saw how after voting in Haryana, the Election Commission repeatedly changed the voter turnout figures for three consecutive days, whereas the final figures should have come by late evening on the day of voting," he stated. "Not only this, the figures of the last five elections show that the govt in Haryana has always been formed by the party that won in the postal ballot, but this time the opposite happened. Congress got a huge majority in 74 seats in the postal ballot, but BJP won in the EVM counting. Therefore, Congress has also demanded that elections should be held on ballot paper. If elections can be held on ballot papers in countries like America and Germany, then why not in India?" he asked. Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir's nuclear rant from US soil

A confrontation between INDIA bloc Members of Parliament and the Election Commission of India unfolded on the streets of Delhi concerning the special intensive revision of voter lists. A protest march from Parliament to the EC headquarters was obstructed, leading to detentions and instances of MPs scaling barricades. The Opposition alleges widespread irregularities in voter lists, framing it as a constitutional struggle and a fight for 'one man, one vote'. The conflict centers on the EC's demand for a signed affidavit to authenticate data presented by the Opposition, a condition Congress has declined, asserting the data originates from the EC itself. This issue has become a focal point for opposition parties following a press conference by Rahul Gandhi. The allegations against the Election Commission regarding voter data irregularities escalated into a debate between the BJP and Congress. The discussion involved opposition claims of compromised electoral rolls and their call for an EC press conference, countered by the BJP's challenge to substantiate claims via affidavit, citing potential legal consequences under Section 31 of the Representation of Peoples Act 1950-51 for false declarations. Discrepancies in states including Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Bihar were raised, while the BJP noted Congress's lack of objection in states where they secured victories despite similar voter list deletions.
