A Beatle's Haunting Song Sets the Mood at Start of New Horror Movie ‘Weapons'

A Beatle's Haunting Song Sets the Mood at Start of New Horror Movie 'Weapons' originally appeared on Parade. Much like how the new Superman movie closes with a hidden gem from Iggy Pop, the new No. 1 movie in the U.S.—Zach Cregger's mystery horror, Weapons—drops the needle on a deep cut from the past. But fans of The Beatles' solo work probably recognized it right away. Weaponsstars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Alden Ehrenreich. Its premise is summed up in its tagline: "Last night at 2:17 a.m. every child from Mrs. Gandy's class woke up, got out of bed, went downstairs, opened the front door, walked into the dark ... And they never came back." And what is the song that plays when those children go missing? George Harrison's "Beware of Darkness." "Beware of Darkness" comes from Harrison's 1970 triple album All Things Must Pass, opening Side Three (aka the first track on the second LP). "Watch out now / Take care, beware of the thoughts that linger / Winding up inside your head," he sings on the second verse. "The hopelessness around you / In the dead of night / Beware of sadness." Harrison wrote about the origin of the song in his memoir, I, Me, Mine. "'Beware of Darkness' was written at home in England during a period when I had some of my friends from the Radha Krishna temple staying," he wrote. Harrison indicated that his guests had a saying: "Watch out for Māya." Per Britannica'ssummation, Māya is a "fundamental concept in Hindu philosophy," one that means that "a god can make human beings believe in what turns out to be an illusion." It later came to represent the "powerful force that creates the cosmic illusion that the phenomenal world is real," or the illusion that distracts a person from their true purpose. Harrison refers to Māya in the third verse: "As each unconscious sufferer / Wanders aimlessly / Beware of Māya." Harrison famously performed 'Beware of Darkness' at the Concert for Bangladesh in August 1971, both during the afternoon and evening performances; the latter of which was included on the Concert for Bangladesh live album and the corresponding concert film. While many know "My Sweet Lord" as the big single from All Things Must Pass, Rolling Stoneonce considered "Beware of Darkness" the album's best song. "Musically enigmatic and strangely incomplete, it is both a warning and an affirmation," wrote author Ben Garson in 2011.A Beatle's Haunting Song Sets the Mood at Start of New Horror Movie 'Weapons' first appeared on Parade on Aug 11, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared. Why a '70s Singer Missed Out on Recording What Became the Beatles' Final Hit Song

Why a '70s Singer Missed Out on Recording What Became the Beatles' Final Hit Song originally appeared on Parade. Can you imagine anyone but Paul McCartney singing 'The Long and Winding Road'? Released in May 1970, a month after The Beatles broke up, the song stood as a makeshift eulogy for the band. Fans found solace and sympathy in McCartney's voice as he sang, 'The wild and windy night that the rain washed away / Has left a pool of tears, crying for the day / Why leave me standing here? / Let me know the way.' Released as a single in the U.S. (and oddly, not in the U.K.), 'The Long and Winding Road' went to the top of the charts. As of today, it's the band's last No. 1 song on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100—but, as Beatles lore goes, it was meant for someone else: . Recently, Tim David Kelly, aka Tim From Kicking Harold, highlighted how McCartney and Tom Jones 'were having a great time' while out on the town. After a few drinks, Jones asked McCartney to write him a song. 'Paul, who very much enjoyed doing this type of thing, told his friend he'd be happy to write a song for him.' McCartney soon had the song ready and sent it over to Jones. But McCartney included a catch. 'The condition was that I could do it, but it had to be my next single,' Jones told Wales Onlinein 2013. 'Paul wanted it out straight away. At that time, I had a song called 'Without Love' that I was going to be releasing.' Jones asked his record label, which was 'gearing up' towards the release of 'Without Love,' if he could 'stop everything' so he could record this new song. 'They said it would take a lot of time, and it was impractical, so I ended up not doing it,' said Jones. 'I was kicking myself,' he said. 'I knew it was a strong song and of course it subsequently appeared on[Let It Be].' 'The Long and Winding Road' was a source of contention within the Beatles. McCartney—who already resented the band's manager, Allen Klein—was furious that Klein, apparently without consulting anyone in the band, had producer Phil Spector record the orchestral and choral overdubs to the song. McCartney wrote a letter to Klein and Spector, demanding that 'in the future, no one will be allowed to add to or subtract from a recording of one of my songs without my permission.' He also demanded changes to the version, ending his note with 'Don't ever do it again.'Why a '70s Singer Missed Out on Recording What Became the Beatles' Final Hit Song first appeared on Parade on Aug 11, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared. Jennifer Lopez Just Made a Shocking Marriage Confession—And I Didn't See This Coming

Let's be real: life rarely follows a straight path. What works for one person (or couple) might totally flop for someone else. The same goes for love. Some people dust themselves off and jump right back in, while others take a beat and choose a different route entirely. And lately, it seems like Jennifer Lopez is leaning into that second option when it comes to marriage. While performing in Bilbao, Spain on July 15 as part of the European leg of her This Is Me…Now: The Tour, responded to a cheeky fan sign that read, 'J Lo, marry me?' Her response? Not what you'd expect from someone who's been known to wear her heart on her designer sleeve. 'I think I'm done with that,' she said, laughing briefly before continuing with her set. 'I've tried that a few times.' Honestly, I was a little surprised by her answer. Jennifer has always struck me as the ultimate romantic—someone who believes in love no matter how many times it doesn't work out. But also… I get it. After four marriages, anyone might start rethinking their relationship to, well, relationships. To recap: she was married to Ojani Noa (1997–1998), Cris Judd (2001–2003), Marc Anthony (2004–2014) and, most recently, Ben Affleck (2022–2025). That's a lot of love and a lot of lessons. But one thing Jennifer hasn't given up on? Serving a lewk. Back in May, she posted not one but two outfits that had everyone searching for dupes: a pink beachy moment with a bikini and maxi skirt combo and a gingham sundress that gave total Mother's Day goals. So while may be pressing pause on wedding bells, her style game is very much still in full swing. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Click here.
