Baftas 2025: how to watch, predictions and timetable

The Guardian16-02-2025
With each passing year the attention paid to the Bafta film awards turns up a notch, as campaigns jostle and reposition themselves in the quest for the real prize: an Academy Award. The Oscar race is pretty open this year, even more so after the Emilia Pérez debacle, but with its British centre of gravity and slightly differing nominations list, the Baftas have their own dynamic. Hence the Baftas can sometimes seem to be a fairground-mirror reflection of the American contest, or (looked at the other way) an assertion of a similar but separate cultural identity.
The most obvious example of this is the strong showing for Belfast rap comedy Kneecap, which could walk off with a fistful of Baftas, but failed to even get on the Academy nomination sheet. Hard Truths star Marianne Jean-Baptiste is the other big Oscar casualty, but she is in with a major shout for best actress here. And in a wider sense, the current Oscar frontrunners – The Brutalist, Anora, A Complete Unknown – may not resonate quite so strongly with British voters, so expect Conclave, a (largely) domestic effort, to put up a significant fight and follow through on its nominations lead.
There is still the usual irritating two-hour delay for the TV audience – why it's not broadcast live is bit of a mystery, especially as all the drama is leaked when the results pop up instantly on social media. (They appear to have abandoned the experiment of screening part of it live, which they tried a couple of years ago.)
In the UK: As is traditional, the Baftas are on BBC One from 7pm and streaming on iPlayer. The red-carpet show starts on Bafta's YouTube channel at 3pm (and finishes at 5pm, when the award ceremony starts in real life).
In the US: The ceremony will stream on BritBox International, starting at 2pm ET/11am PT, in line with the BBC's broadcast.
In Australia: BritBox is showing the ceremony on demand.
Here's some homework before the big kick-off:
Who's up for what
Why Conclave is blessed
Why Kneecap has already won
Set your faces to stun, it's Jeff Goldblum and Take That!

The Guardian's chief critic Peter Bradshaw has already had his say, so here's a final stab in the dark. (Conclave and Kneecap, basically, with a bit of Wallace and Gromit on the side.)

Great British Sewing Bee contestant forced to apologise after off-camera blunder

The Great British Sewing Bee was full of eventful moments on Tuesday's episode with an off-camera blunder and emotional scenes The Great British Sewing Bee delivered plenty of drama on Tuesday's instalment, featuring behind-the-scenes mishaps and tearjerking moments. ‌ During the 19 August episode, contestants faced "children's week", where they were tasked with creating garments for youngsters. ‌ The opening challenge required contestants to incorporate adaptive fashion elements whilst tackling a pattern for miniature dungarees. ‌ Following this, the transformation round saw participants reimagining maternity clothing into toddler ensembles. The final made-to-measure task challenged hopefuls to craft outfits inspired by their childhood career dreams, spanning everything from beekeeping to politics, reports Wales Online. Contestant Caz had aspired to become fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, one of the 1970s' most legendary style icons. Her tribute design featured fitted trousers and a peplum top with faux shirred detailing, completed with a coordinating beret. Paying homage to Zandra Rhodes, she selected striking fabrics and even enlisted her young model's help in creating the print. ‌ Watching her creation grace the runway, Caz was spotted dabbing away tears as she observed with evident pride. During the judges' critique, an overwhelmed Caz confessed: "I was wiping away tears while my model came down the catwalk, I'm just really pleased I turned up today." ‌ As the programme concluded, Caz found herself in floods of tears once more upon discovering she'd claimed garment of the week, exclaiming: "Wow!" Sadly, this meant one hopeful had to bid farewell to the contest, with Dan being the unlucky contestant sent packing, leaving his fellow competitors visibly upset. As the programme drew to a close, there were further dramatic moments to unfold. During a piece to camera with contestant Orla, who had harboured dreams of becoming a beekeeper in her youth and had crafted a themed ensemble for the task, she found herself having to make an apology following an off-screen mishap. ‌ The hopeful was clutching a plush bee toy whilst telling viewers: "Everyone's makes were just bee-utiful. I thought it was really fun" before hurling the cuddly creature out of shot. Unfortunately, the soft toy accidentally struck something or someone beyond the camera's view as a loud crash could be heard, prompting a startled Orla to erupt into giggles. The Great British Sewing Bee continues on Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose devastated by mum's death at 57 as she pays tribute

Oscar winner Ariana DeBose announced that her mother, Gina DeBose, died, aged 57, over the weekend, three years after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer Ariana DeBose has announced that her mother, Gina DeBose, has died three years after being diagnosed with cancer. The Oscar winner shared the news this afternoon and paid tribute to her parent, who was her "best friend". ‌ The actor, 34, who rose to fame on Broadway before starring in the acclaimed film West Side Story (2021), shared the news on Instagram earlier. She told her followers on the platform that Gina died, aged 57, on Sunday morning as a result of complications with stage 3 ovarian cancer. ‌ Tony Awards host Ariana included a number of photos of the late teacher in the post. She paid tribute to her in the caption, describing her mother as a "warrior queen" and telling fans that she had been a "force of epic proportion". ‌ Ariana wrote in the post today: "At 10:28 am on August 17th my gorgeous, hilarious, outspoken, warrior queen Mother - Gina Michelle DeBose - passed away due to complications with stage 3 ovarian cancer. I couldn't be more proud of her and how she fought this insidious disease over the past 3 years. She was 57 years young. "She was my favorite person, my biggest fan and toughest critic. My best friend. She was my date to every important moment in my professional and personal life - and I wouldn't have it any other way." The former Hamilton cast member continued by writing: "It had always been the two of us for as long as I can remember. Through lean times, and there were many of those & green times. "She fought like hell to give me a good life, a good education and every opportunity in the world. I wouldn't be where I am without her. I meant it when I said my Oscar 'is just as much hers as it is mine'." Ariana added: "My mom loved to paint, play cards, listen to good music & snuggle with her cats; but her life's purpose, aside from being my mom, was educating young people. She passed just shy of delivering 30 years of service as a public school teacher (most currently 8th grade social studies)." ‌ She added that Gina "thrived" in a classroom and her creativity "knew no bounds". Ariana said that her mother was "beloved" and "respected" by colleagues and students. Ariana said: "The greatest advocate for the underdog, a believer in arts education and the smartest person I know - with a willingness to speak her mind regardless of the consequences. But she was also a heart forward individual who believed in hard work, compassion and empathy in the same breath." She went on to share: "For the record: my greatest and most proud achievement will always be to have made her proud. I love you mommy. Now travel amongst the seas, the winds and the angels as I know you always loved to do." Ariana encouraged anyone wanting to make a donation in Gina's honour to support three cancer organisations. She provided links to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, Ovaries. Talk About Them and Teal Diva in the post.

BBC presenter announces pregnancy in joyful update after engagement and new home

BBC sports presenter Jenny Drummond has revealed she's expecting her first child, sharing the news after recently getting engaged to her long-time love and moving into a new home BBC and TNT Sports presenter Jenny Drummond has revealed she's expecting her first child, sharing the happy news with fans after a life-changing year that's seen her get engaged and move into a new house. ‌ The 36-year-old sports journalist, who is best known for her coverage of major events like Wimbledon, the Women's Six Nations, and The Open, posted a photo cradling her baby bump on social media, writing: "They say things sometimes come in threes - engagement, house, now baby G. Feeling very lucky indeed." ‌ While she didn't tag or name her partner, fans and famous friends were quick to celebrate the milestone. It comes after Cheryl's emotional tribute to Liam Payne in her first big job since his tragic death. ‌ After sharing her wonderful news, Jenny's famous pals flocked to the comments to wish her congratulations. Broadcaster Laura Woods wrote: 'Amazing news congratulations! Xxx." Jenny, who is a former tennis player who transitioned into broadcasting, also shared a more personal glimpse into her pregnancy journey. Posting a behind-the-scenes video from Wimbledon, where she voiced and presented the BBC 's women's final preview, she admitted she was struggling with morning sickness at the time. "Always so proud to present and voice the women's preview to the Wimbledon final of @bbcsport coverage," she captioned the clip. ‌ "Not going to lie, I puked my way through this shoot – morning sickness has not been my friend but we got there thanks to pick n mix and most importantly to Joe Bamonte, @bensmith_cam and the editing team in Salford." Jenny, who hails from Scotland, has become one of the most recognisable faces in British sports broadcasting. Her work spans tennis, rugby, and golf, and she's gained a loyal following for her intelligent commentary and professional presence on screen. ‌ Despite her success, Jenny has also been candid about the hurdles she has faced as a woman in a male-dominated field. Speaking to the Daily Mail recently, she opened up about the ongoing double standards in sports media: "As a female you get commented on how you look and what you wear rather than how you perform as a presenter or reporter," she said. "Then people criticise the angle of your questions or how articulate you were in the way that you said something. That p**s me off, for sure," Jenny added. She also explained why she keeps her distance from social media engagement: "I use Twitter /X for work but am not active on it. I'm sensitive and can't hack that (abuse) side of it, so I don't even bother looking."
