French actor barred from Cannes red carpet amid ongoing sexual assault allegations
CANNES, May 15 — The Cannes film festival said it had barred an actor in a prominent French film from the red carpet today because of sexual assault allegations against him.
Theo Navarro-Mussy has a secondary role as a police officer in the film 'Dossier 137' by Dominik Moll which is to premiere on Thursday in the festival's main competition.
According to French magazine Telerama, which broke the news, the actor was accused of rape by three former partners in 2018, 2019, and 2020, but the case was dropped last month for lack of evidence.
The three women plan to appeal and file a civil lawsuit, Telerama said.
Cannes Festival director Thierry Fremaux confimed to Telerama that Navarro-Mussy had been excluded because an appeal was underway. Navarro-Mussy's lawyer denied this.
'The procedure is still ongoing,' Fremaux was quoted as saying.
The festival confirmed the decision and Fremaux's remarks when contacted by AFP.
A French parliamentary inquiry into the entertainment industry published its findings last month, with MPs concluding that abuse of performers was 'endemic'.
Inquiry chair Sandrine Rousseau, an outspoken feminist lawmaker from The Greens party, called on Cannes Festival to set an example in stamping out sexual abuse, as well as physical and psychological violence. — AFP

French mayor to face trial for alleged sex tape blackmail of political rival
LYON, June 7 — A French mayor accused of using a sex tape to blackmail a political rival is set to go on trial in September after a court yesterday ordered him to face criminal proceedings. Gael Perdriau, who leads the city of Saint-Etienne in central France, is accused of orchestrating the plot in 2015, using footage of his deputy with a male escort. The two magistrates investigating the case ordered that Perdriau, 52, be tried for blackmail, theft, embezzlement of public funds by a public official and participation in a criminal association, Lyon's chief prosecutor Thierry Dran said in a statement. The case, triggered by a whistleblower in 2022, involves a 2015 video of former deputy mayor Gilles Artigues receiving a massage from a male escort in a Paris hotel. Perdriau allegedly demanded political loyalty and electoral concessions from Artigues in return for keeping the compromising video private, according to court documents seen by AFP. Despite being ousted from the conservative Republicans party and under pressure to resign, Perdriau has maintained his innocence and continues to hold office—even hinting at a 2026 re-election bid. Norwegian gynaecologist who filmed rapes of patients gets 21-year jail sentence, barred from practising medicine ever
OSLO, June 6 — A Norwegian court on Friday sentenced a doctor to 21 years in prison for committing dozens of rapes over a period of almost two decades. Arne Bye, 55, was found guilty of committing 70 counts of rape and sexual assault during gynecological examinations of his patients between 2004 and 2022. He was also condemned for 80 instances of abuse of his position. Bye committed the acts at his medical practice in the town of Frosta in central Norway. The court in the city of Trondelag barred the doctor from exercising his profession indefinitely and demanded he financially compensate his victims. Ninety-four women testified during the trial, describing how Bye committed multiple acts of non-consensual touching and digital penetration without medical justification. The acts all constitute rape under Norwegian law. Bye also filmed the assaults. 'The suspect's actions make this case an extremely serious one. The actions are unacceptable,' the Adresseavisen newspaper quoted judge Espen Haug as saying in court. The sentence matched the one requested by the prosecution.
