Ichiro Suzuki was officially inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 27, becoming the first Asian-born player ever to receive the sport's highest honor.
The 51-year-old Aichi native, whose electrifying career began in Japan before transforming Major League Baseball with the Seattle Mariners, received near-unanimous support from the Baseball Writers' Association of America and was celebrated in Cooperstown for his record-breaking achievements on both sides of the Pacific.
Suzuki's legendary MLB career includes more than 3,000 hits, 10 Gold Glove Awards and 10 All-Star selections. In 2004, he set the American League single-season record with 262 hits. When his professional hits in Japan are combined with his MLB total, Suzuki's 4,367 hits are recognized as the most by any player in the history of top-tier professional baseball. He is also the only MLB player to reach both 3,000 hits and 500 stolen bases.
During the induction ceremony, Suzuki delivered a speech that blended humor with reflection, telling the crowd, 'For the third time, I am a rookie,' referencing his journeys in Japan, MLB and now the Hall of Fame. He spoke of the inspiration he drew from his first visit to Cooperstown and credited his fans and mentors for his long-standing success. The Mariners plan to retire Suzuki's No. 51 jersey in August in honor of his achievements.

These 3 Teams Should Consider Signing Marcus Stroman After Yankees Release

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees shook things up on Friday. Though they didn't trade for a starting pitcher at the deadline, the Yankees decided they'd seen enough of Marcus Stroman. As part of their flurry of roster moves to make room for their new trade acquisitions, they released the two-time All-Star in the second and final year of his contract. No one is mistaking Stroman for the two-time All-Star he was earlier in his career (though one of those appearances somehow came only two years ago). But there are still some major league teams he could help, whether it's in a playoff chase or simply to help eat some innings on the way to the finish line. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 20: Marcus Stroman #0 of the New York Yankees reacts after pitching during the seventh inning against the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium on May 20, 2024 in the... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 20: Marcus Stroman #0 of the New York Yankees reacts after pitching during the seventh inning against the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium on May 20, 2024 in the Bronx borough of New York City. MoreHere, then, are three teams Stroman would be an intriguing candidate to join for the remainder of the season. 1. Cleveland Guardians You wouldn't know it, based on how the mood has been surrounding the team over the last few weeks, but the Guardians are still very much in the wild card hunt. Entering Friday at exactly .500, Cleveland is three games back of a potential playoff spot. Trading for starting pitching would have been a bridge too far, considering the Guardians' losses of Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase during the league's gambling investigation and the always-tight purse strings in town. But if they can get Stroman for the minimum price, perhaps he could give them some much-needed innings down the stretch, assuming Cleveland doesn't have a big-league-ready prospect that it's been keeping in reserve. 2. San Francisco Giants Another team that operated nothing like buyers at the trade deadline, but that still has a shot at the playoffs if things click. The Giants got rid of top relievers Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval this week, so there are suddenly innings available all up and down the pitching staff. The Giants have had a rough time finding starters all year, and if there's any place Stroman will be able to shake off his home run problem, it's Oracle Park. The Giants should be able to incorporate one more veteran and still give plenty of work to young arms like Carson Whisenhunt and Hayden Birdsong. 3. Chicago Cubs The lone true playoff contender on this list, the Cubs were probably the most disappointing team on the starting pitching front at the deadline. (It's either them or the Boston Red Sox.) Stroman made that 2023 All-Star appearance with the Cubs, though he struggled mightily in the second half that year. He still finished with a 3.95 ERA, following up a 3.50 mark in his first season with Chicago in 2022. New addition Mike Soroka would be best served in a bullpen role, and perhaps if Stroman were to rediscover himself in Chicago, that's how the Cubs could deploy him. Why did Micah Parsons demand a trade?

WHEW. It's been a Friday in the NFL, my friends. Things were already tense when it came to stud pass-rusher Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys, thanks to the do-it-all EDGE's demand for a new contract with 2026 free agency looming. But then? It exploded. MORE ON MICAH PARSONS: There was an initial report from The Athletic's Dianna Russini about how the "relationship has deteriorated to the point where the star pass rusher is considering drastic measures which could include a trade request or even a declaration that he is severing his relationship with the team." Then? It happened. He demanded a trade in a lengthy letter posted on X (formerly Twitter). So: What the heck happened here? Let's discuss: Micah Parsons' contract situation He's set to make over $24 million this year, but given the long list of his accomplishments, Parsons wants a new contract that will pay him what he deserves before he hits free agency. It's that simple. Jerry Jones' comments probably didn't help He took a random shot at Parsons before camp started. Micah Parsons still wanted to be with the Cowboys ... That is, until now. Will Jerry Jones and the Cowboys give in and trade Micah Parsons? Or will they give into his contract demands? Pure speculation here: Feels like this is one of those cases where Parsons has made his move, and maybe Jones realizes he could no longer play around and could offer a sizeable new deal. But if Parsons is truly done with the Cowboys? Let the phone calls to the front office begin! This article originally appeared on For The Win: Why Micah Parsons requested a trade?
