Pact inked for long-range air defence radar system
The agreement was signed by MCMC executive chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Mindef secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima'25) yesterday.
It was witnessed by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin ( pic ).
Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, MCMC commission member Jen (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, Maj-Jen Datuk Muhammad Tarminzi Mustapha, who was representing the Air Force chief, and senior officials from both parties.
In a joint statement, MCMC and Mindef said the agreement marks a strategic partnership to enhance national defence capabilities and readiness through the development of key military infrastructure using advanced communication and security technologies.
The agreement also reflects the government's continued commitment to national security through public and defence sector collaborations.
'Through this agreement, MCMC and the Malaysian Armed Forces will jointly implement a comprehensive strategic initiative to develop a long-range air defence radar system for TUDM.
'The new radar system will significantly enhance airspace surveillance and control capabilities in the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia, directly contributing to the nation's security and sovereignty,' it added, Bernama reported.
It also noted that this collaboration aligns with the whole-of-government approach, which prioritises inter-agency synergy in pursuit of national aspirations.

Govt mulls revising laws to tackle online drug trade
KAJANG: The Home Ministry is studying the need to amend existing laws or introduce new legislation to address the growing issue of drug sales via online platforms. Saifuddin said one of the main challenges in tackling online drug sales is the use of various platforms that are difficult to monitor, especially when transactions occur outside official channels. "If the transactions happen on official e-commerce platforms, they are easier to detect. "But if social media platforms are used, it becomes more challenging. Nearly 9,000 banners taken down in MBDK's fight against illegal adverts
MBDK personnel removing illegal advertisements on a lamp post in Klang. — KK SHAM/The Star KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) has removed 8,850 illegal banners, bunting and posters – placed on trees, lamp posts, traffic lights and road signs – so far this year. MBDK Corporate Communi-cations Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said most of these advertisements involved property sale, transport rental, household renovations and moneylending services. 'Out of these illegal advertisements, 4,713 were unlicensed moneylenders or 'ah long' posters,' she said after an operation to remove illegal bunting near Jalan Tepi Sungai in the city. Norfiza said 60 phone numbers of loan sharks had been handed over to Malaysia Communications and Multi-media Commission (MCMC), which could terminate them under Section 263 (2) of Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. She said MBDK had a unit that went out each day to remove unlicensed advertisements, which marred the royal city's image and damaged trees. 'When a report is made about illegal advertisements, our enforcement team will respond within an hour or two,' said Norfiza. Last year, MBDK removed 11,587 illegal banners and bunting, including 5,087 loan shark-related advertisements, with 89 phone numbers referred to MCMC. Norfiza said the city council had also issued compounds to 117 businesses in relation to illegal advertisements up to July, following 98 operations. 'Advertisement By-law 2007 states that no person may erect any advertising sign or banner without prior written approval of MBDK. 'Owners of illegal advertisements could also be compounded up to RM1,000,' she said. Norfiza said flagrant disregard for the by-law also placed motorists at risk. 'Bunting tied to poles at traffic intersections obstruct motorists' view.' She added that these advertisements also hampered the view of pedestrians attempting to cross roads.

Former chief of Malaysian defence force conferred Singapore's highest military award
SINGAPORE: Malaysia's former Chief of Defence Force, Gen Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman (pic), has been conferred Singapore's highest military award, the Distinguished Service Order (Military), for his significant contributions towards strengthening defence cooperation between the two countries. Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam presented the award during an investiture ceremony at the Defence Ministry (Mindef) on Thursday (July 31). Mindef said under his leadership, the armed forces of Singapore and Malaysia continued to enhance long-standing defence ties through professional exchanges, cross-attendance of courses, and various flagship bilateral exercises such as Exercise Malapura, Exercise Semangat Bersatu and Exercise Sarex Malsing. "These interactions have helped to forge closer rapport and trust between both armed forces,' Mindef said in a statement. The ministry added that Mohammad's strong commitment to regional defence cooperation has also seen both armed forces work closely together on platforms such as the Malacca Straits Patrol, the Five Power Defence Arrangements, and the Asean Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM)/ADMM-Plus. "He also consistently supported multilateral security initiatives, such as the Information Fusion Centre and the Counter Terrorism Information Facility, enhancing regional security and stability,' it said. Guests at the investiture included Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing, Permanent Secretary (Defence) Chan Heng Kee, Chief of Defence Force Vice Admiral Aaron Beng, as well as other senior government officials and military officers from Singapore and Malaysia. Mohammad, who will be here until Aug 3, called on Chan earlier Thursday at Mindef, during which both sides reaffirmed the long-standing bilateral defence ties and expressed commitment to deepen the bilateral defence relationship.
