Jhoan Duran earns first save with Phillies after manager gives up No. 59 jersey
Duran made his way out of the bullpen wearing No. 59 to a loud roar from the crowd at Citizens Bank Park, just two days after he was traded to Philadelphia by the Minnesota Twins for a pair of Top 100 prospects: Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait.
Who is Jhoan Duran?
Duran is a 6-foot-3, 230-pound right-hander from the Dominican Republic.
He entered Friday with a 6-4 record, a 2.01 ERA and 16 saves in 49 games with the Twins this year.

Jhoan Duran wears No. 59 for Phillies
The Phillies are doing their best to welcome Duran with open arms.
Duran wore the No. 59 throughout the first four years of his major league career with the Twins. The number was already in use in Philadelphia, by manager Rob Thomson.
Usually, when a player is inquiring about a jersey number, there is some level of bargaining that takes place to complete the swap. That wasn't needed — Thomson willingly gave up the number to Duran.
"The number really doesn't mean much to me," Thomson said. "But if it makes you feel better, I'm all-in. He said, 'Yeah.' Then it's all yours."
Thomson will wear the No. 49 in honor of former New York Yankees pitcher Ron Guidry.

Shedeur Sanders confronts reporter after NFL preseason debut vs. Panthers
Shedeur Sanders had time on Friday night – some of it in the pocket, but maybe more of it after the game. In the wake of Sanders' positive debut vs. the Carolina Panthers, the rookie quarterback caught up with Cleveland-based reporter and radio personality Tony Grossi. Sanders appeared to take issue with Grossi's negative slant towards him. In the tunnels of Bank of America Stadium, Sanders addressed Grossi directly, and called out his coverage. And he did it with a smile on: "Tony, I be hoping you have something positive to say about me," Sanders tells Grossi in the video (via Well Off Media). "You only say negative stuff about me. And I'm like, 'I ain't do nothing to you.'" "Come on, what I do? What'd I do to you, Tony?" Sanders kept a smile on throughout the short-lived conversation and he and the reporter shared a little bit of a laugh before the passer headed into the locker room. It's not the first time that Sanders has confronted a perceived detractor in a public setting. In 2024, the then-Colorado Buffaloes quarterback caught up with Colorado State quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and refused to shake his hand following a 43-35 Colorado victory. Sanders finished 14-of-23 passing with 138 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns win. He played almost three entire quarters and showcased skill that led some draft analysts to believe he should have been a Day 1 selection. With more performances like he had on Friday night, Sanders may find himself speaking with plenty more critics in the coming weeks, months or years. Studs and duds from the Eagles' 34-27 win over the Bengals in the preseason opener
The Eagles returned to Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday night. They faced a quality opponent out of the gate, with the Bengals' explosive offense playing the first series in a quest to reduce a slow start to the regular season. The results were offensive fireworks, and Tanner McKee once again put the NFL world on notice about his diverse skill set. Philadelphia will have a day off on Friday, before a light Saturday session, an open stadium practice for the fans on Sunday, and two days of joint practice with Cleveland next week. With the dust settled, we're looking at the studs and duds from an impressive preseason opener. Stud-QB Tanner McKee Going back to Week 18 of last season, McKee has been on a blistering pace. On Thursday night, the Eagles' backup quarterback got the start and finished 20-for-25 for 252 yards with two touchdowns and a passer rating of 135.5. Dud-CB Kelee Ringo The Eagles rested Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, leaving all the action for Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson. Ringo allowed a 36-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Ja'Marr Chase, and whiffed on the tackle, adding further scrutiny to a tough night. Stud- WR Johnny Wilson The big wide receiver had a quiet training camp, but proved to be a matchup nightmare on Thursday night. A tweener who is part wide out, part tight end, Wilson had three catches for 73 yards (24.3 avg) and made two spectacular catches on 50/50 balls against smaller defenders. Dud-WR Elijah Cooks You can't make the club on the injured list, and the training camp standout suffered an injury on a kick return and was carted off with a significant injury. Stud-OL Tyler Steen The former Alabama left tackle looks to finally solidify himself in his third attempt at winning the starting right guard job, and Steen was blowing holes open early on in the win over Cincinnati. Steen delivered a crushing block to Bengals defender Logan Wilson on a 38-yard run by Will Shipley. Stud-AJ Dillon Philadelphia has a solid trio of running backs, and Dillon showed that he still has it, gaining 27 yards on five carries. He also caught three passes for 27 yards. Dud-OL Kenyon Green Acquired in the trade for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the former first-round pick got third-team snaps, was called for an obvious holding penalty, and exited the game after getting injured in the fourth quarter after a Kyle McCord interception. Dud-QB Kyle McCord In a battle with Dorian Thompson-Robinson for the third quarterback spot, McCord completed 1 of 5 passes for 8 yards and threw an interception. Stud- Tariq Castro-Fields The former Penn State cornerback had three pass breakups in the fourth quarter and is a player to watch. 5 standouts from the Eagles' 34-27 win over the Bengals in the preseason opener
With the dust settled, we're looking at five standouts from the Philadelphia Eagles' 34-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the preseason opener. WR Darius Cooper: An undrafted free agent wide receiver out of FCS, Tarleton State, Cooper has been a training camp standout and dominated the Bengals with six catches on seven targets for 82 yards and a touchdown. DT Ty Robinson Philadelphia traded Thomas Booker to Las Vegas for cornerback Jakorian Bennett, and Robinson was a significant reason why Howie Roseman was comfortable moving on from the veteran. The rookie out of Nebraska is powerful and has a high motor that should rub off on his teammates. Robinson got his first NFL sack in the second quarter. WR Ainias Smith A player we had squarely on the roster bubble showed his explosive traits on Thursday night. Smith caught a touchdown pass and also added a 46-yard punt return on the night. LB Patrick Johnson Back where it all started, Johnson had a sack nullified, but made the most of his snaps and even recorded an interception. RB ShunDerrick Powell The rookie plays with burst and excellent footwork, carving out six carries for 32 yards (5.3 avg) and one touchdown.
