By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan recently announced that the RON95 subsidy rationalisation would begin in the second half of the year. PETALING JAYA: The Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) has called on the government to delay rationalising RON95 subsidies until critical issues affecting station sustainability are addressed. PDAM president Khairul Annuar Abdul Aziz, whose association represents more than 4,000 petrol stations nationwide, said dealer margins, fixed under the automatic pricing mechanism, had not been revised since 2019 and no longer reflected current operating costs. He also voiced concern over the merchant discount rate (MDR) imposed on card payments, which increases as fuel prices rise but leaves dealers' per-litre commissions untouched. 'Without a margin revision, small and medium-volume station operators will face losses from the very first day of the RON95 subsidy rationalisation implementation,' he said in a statement today. 'And as pump prices increase under the rationalisation, the MDR rises accordingly, but dealer commissions remain static, resulting in a further erosion of margins.' Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan recently announced that the subsidy rationalisation would begin in the second half of the year. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the cuts would mainly target foreigners and Malaysia's top 5% to 10% of income earners. Khairul also took aim at a group representing Bumiputera fuel retailers, which claimed there had been no consultation with dealers on the rationalisation plan. He dismissed the claim as 'inaccurate and misleading', saying PDAM was the government-recognised umbrella body for petrol dealers and had been in formal talks with the domestic trade and finance ministries. 'We urge all stakeholders to put aside differences and unite behind a common objective: to support a fair and sustainable targeted subsidy system without neglecting the economic realities faced at the operational level,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No, I'm living my best life, Khairy Jamaluddin says on joining Cabinet
Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 By: Minderjeet Kaur, FMT Text Size: Khairy Jamaluddin was sacked from Umno in January 2023 for breaching party discipline during the 15th general election. PETALING JAYA: Khairy Jamaluddin has dismissed speculation that he may join Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Cabinet, saying he has no reason to leave his current lifestyle. Speaking to reporters after a product launch today, the former health minister said he was 'living his best life' now. 'Why would I want to leave this?' he said. Speculation on Khairy's possible appointment to the Cabinet arose following the resignations of Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from their ministerial posts. The former Umno Youth chief said in February that he remained undecided on his next move, following calls for him to stay out of Umno for good or join PAS. In response to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reportedly saying that those who 'keluar sekejap (exit briefly)' from the party should stay out, he said it was 'an interesting suggestion'. Khairy and ex-information chief Shahril Hamdan started the 'Keluar Sekejap' podcast in 2023, discussing political, social and other contemporary issues. Khairy was sacked from Umno in January 2023 for breaching party discipline during the 15th general election. Shahril, meanwhile, was given a six-year suspension in August 2022. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? It's Madani City, not ‘Anwar's City', says PKR leader
Published on: Thursday, June 05, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 05, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim being briefed on the Madani City project on Tuesday. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: A PKR leader has defended the Madani City project in Putrajaya after a Bersatu leader questioned the use of the government's tagline in naming the project. PKR central leadership council member G Sivamalar said 'Madani' referred to the government's core values – including sustainability, innovation, and compassion – and was not meant to promote any single individual. 'It needs to be stressed that it's 'Madani City', not 'Anwar's City' as cynically claimed by Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan. 'It's shameful to mock a policy built on such principles for political gain,' Sivamalar said in a statement. She added that the project addressed a real need for housing among civil servants, who make up 90% of Putrajaya's population. Sivamalar cited the Auditor-General's Report 2021, which said that nearly 18,000 civil servants were still waiting for government quarters. She said the 41ha Madani City project would offer 10,000 housing units for up to 30,000 people, and was meant to be a walkable city with essential services within a 15-minute radius. She urged critics to stop politicising public welfare and to support meaningful solutions introduced by the government. Yesterday, Wan Saiful warned against using administrative slogans to brand major projects, saying it could lead to losses if there was a change in government. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Madani City project is set for June 26. The township will come with a secondary school, a technical and vocational education and training institution, banks, a government clinic and a mosque, among others. Its first phase, involving around 3,000 residential units and a vertical school, is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
