Yankees sign RHP Kenta Maeda to minor league deal
Maeda, 37, was released by the Detroit Tigers after a rough opening month to the season, in which he threw eight innings of relief over seven appearances and had a 7.88 ERA with six walks, three hit batters and eight strikeouts.
Maeda has played parts of nine major league seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2016-19), Minnesota Twins (2020-21, 2023) and Tigers (2024-25). Primarily a starter until joining Detroit, Maeda has a career record of 68-56, a 4.20 ERA and 1,055 strikeouts over 226 games (172 starts).
Maeda was runner-up for the 2020 American League Cy Young award after he went 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 starts in the pandemic-shortened season.
The Yankees acquired three relief pitchers at last week's trade deadline but did not deal for a starting pitcher. They released veteran Marcus Stroman to make room for 2024 American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, who came off the injured list and made his season debut this weekend.

However, Trump's boast is rather suspect, considering McCovey – the late Hall of Famer and legendary San Francisco Giants slugger – was born eight years before the President. In fact, when the young McCovey made his major league debut in 1959, Trump was still a decade away from graduating high school. Slate's Leander Schaerlaeckens previously uncovered nine box scores from Trump's high school games, during which he went 4 for 29 at the plate. The opening and closing ceremonies for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics will be overseen by former chairman of Walt Disney Television and head of 21st Century Fox Peter Rice. 'Peter is one of the rare individuals whose expertise seamlessly combines creativity, operational insight and production excellence to deliver Ceremonies that will captivate audiences around the world,' Wasserman said last month. 'He's been a leading figure in shaping the modern television and film landscape and is the perfect asset to reimagining the delivery of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the digital age, leaving a legacy well beyond the Games.' The opening ceremonies will be held on July 14, 2028 at 8pm at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The closing ceremonies will return to the Coliseum on July 30. It's unclear what impact Trump's task force will have on the 2028 games and whom from his administration will be involved.

Reports: Rams RB Kyren Williams reaches 3-year, $33M extension
August 5 - Pro Bowl running back Kyren Williams and the Los Angeles Rams agreed to a three-year, $33 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday. The deal makes Williams the seventh highest-paid running back in the NFL based on new money per season. He was set to enter the final season of his rookie contract with a base salary of $5.35 million, per Spotrac. Williams, 24, made a huge impact in 2024, recording career highs in carries (316), rushing yards (1,299) and rushing touchdowns (14).
