Important date approaches for Jaguars and Brandon Scherff
February 17th is an important date for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Brandon Scherff.
On that day, Scherff, who is currently set to be a free agent this offseason, will have his contract void. At that point, the Jaguars will have to take on $14 million in dead cap for the 2025 season, according to Over the Cap.
Dead cap are dollars that will remain on the current year's salary cap even if that player is playing elsewhere.
The reason that Scherff has so much dead cap is because of the contract restructure that was completed last offseason and utilized four void years.
Void years are essentially fake years added to a contract for salary cap purposes. Those added years are not a contract extension, but rather they allow teams a longer runway to spread salary cap charges out.
The benefit in the now is that it lowers a player's current cap hit. The downside, however, is that when the contract terminates down the road, all of those cap charges that were pushed to the void years accelerate and come due on the salary cap books.
To avoid this, the Jaguars and Scherff can agree to an extension before February 17th, which would allow the team to then spread those cap charges out over the life of the deal, rather than taking it all on this year.
Once that February 17th date passes, if a new deal hasn't been reached, the Jaguars are still able to re-sign Scherff. However, at that point, in addition to taking on the cap hit from the new deal, that aforementioned dead cap hit of $14 million is still on the books as well.
So if an extension isn't reach soon, then it probably becomes more likely that Scherff won't be returning.
Given that the Jaguars' offensive line play has to improve, there is value in bringing back Scherff and his experience. However, there's also a financial motivation for the Jaguars to bring him back as well.

Where does new Jacksonville Jaguars' center Robert Hainsey rank among position group?
Where does new Jacksonville Jaguars' center Robert Hainsey rank among position group? Where does new Jacksonville Jaguars' center Robert Hainsey rank among his position group heading into the 2025 NFL season? Where does new Jacksonville Jaguars' center Robert Hainsey rank among his position group heading into the 2025 NFL season? Pro Football Focus has been putting together its ranking of the top 32 players at each position group. At the guard spot, Mason Cameron had Hainsey at No. 23 on his list. "While we haven't seen much of Hainsey over the past year, he did show flashes on a small sample size, posting a 73.3 PFF overall grade," wrote Cameron. "That should be a positive step toward a return to form in Jacksonville." With the addition of Graham Barton by the Buccaneers in last year's NFL draft, Hainsey played just 94 snaps in 2024 coming off the bench. However, as GM James Gladstone described following the addition of Hainsey in free agency, there were two things about his game that stood out and made him a player that the Jaguars had to sign. One facet is that he knows Liam Coen's offense after the two worked together while in Tampa Bay last season. As Gladstone put it, Hainsey's familiarity with the system "takes some weight off the shoulders" of Trevor Lawrence at the line of scrimmage. The other part of Hainsey's game that grabbed Gladstone's attention was his play style. "The whistle blows and he's playing through it, and that's something that we really, really value," Gladstone said. The Jaguars signed Hainsey to a three-year, $21 million deal with $13 million guaranteed.

Former Browns RB Nick Chubb Linked to AFC Contender
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Nick Chubb is not expected to return to the Cleveland Browns after the team brought in two rookie running backs in the 2025 NFL Draft. That has left the door open to other teams swooping in to land the longtime star. Unfortunately, back in the 2023 NFL season, Chubb suffered a gruesome knee injury for the second time in his career while playing against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He came back last season to play in eight games, but he did not look like his former self. At this point, Chubb remains a free agent. However, with the 2025 season coming up quickly, teams who need running back help could come calling soon. Nick Chubb #24 of the Cleveland Browns rushes for a fourth quarter touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field on November 29, 2020 in Jacksonville, Florida. Read more: Vikings' Reason For Passing on Aaron Rodgers Revealed: Report "I was told that he's hoping to sign here soon, and maybe he gets something done before a minicamp gets into a team. Four-time Pro Bowler," Fowler said. "The return to Cleveland's not totally off the table, from what I'm told, but probably unlikely because of their draft plans, they drafted multiple running backs. I'm told Houston could be one to watch here. They've been looking at that running back market, maybe adding somebody with Joe Mixon." Joining the Texans would be a very intriguing situation for Chubb. He would team up with Joe Mixon in the backfield. Both veteran running backs could help each other stay fresh and healthy. In the eight games that he played with the Browns last season, Chubb carried the football 102 times for 332 yards and three scores, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry. Those numbers are not what fans have become used to seeing. At 29 years old, there is still time for Chubb to get his career back on track. If he can land in the right situation, he could bounce back with a strong 2025 campaign. Read more: Browns Named in Head-Scratching Trade Speculation Last season, Houston finished the year with a 10-7 record and won the AFC South. The Texans then went on to knock off the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs before being eliminated by the Kansas City Chiefs. Adding Chubb would give them another offensive weapon. For Chubb, it would give him a chance to play a key role while also competing for the playoffs. It may not happen, but the fit makes sense for both parties. For more Cleveland Browns and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

New Orleans Saints Lead NFL in Cap Space Gained After June 1st Roster Moves
New Orleans Saints Lead NFL in Cap Space Gained After June 1st Roster Moves originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New Orleans Saints continue to get cap relief. The Saints are projected to earn the most cap relief thanks to June 1st designations, per Over The Cap. New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (4) drops back to pass against the New York Giants during the first quarter at MetLife Stadium. Brad Penner-Imagn Images The big boost to the team's cap space is thanks to the retirements of All-Pro tackle Ryan Ramczyk and veteran quarterback Derek Carr. Carr's cap hit will drop from $20.46 million to either $13.458 million or $19.207 million pending the league's decision on the signing bonus Carr agreed to return. Advertisement Ramczyk's retirement is expected to return $1.25 million to the team with his dead money cap at $11.08 million. The Saints have remained disciplined during free agency and aren't expected to use their newly acquired money to make multiple big moves. New Orleans has been working towards getting cap-compliant for the 2026 offseason and will likely use their estimated $30 million in cap space to roll over in 2026. Despite the team's discipline in spending, there are multiple holes in the roster and the Saints could look to address their depth. The biggest name associated with New Orleans is free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. who the team brought in for a visit in May. Samuel Jr. is scheduled to get a check-up in July and after could be a coveted free agent that New Orleans could target. Advertisement The Saints are in the midst of a soft rebuild and having the money roll over for the 2026 offseason is important. If Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shough end up being the team's quarterback of the future, having money to spend while their young quarterback is on a rookie contract will be pivotal to competing soon.
