Te Akau ready to unleash young guns for spring carnival after stable rebuild
The New Zealand-based Cranbourne stable made a strategic decision to saddle limited starters – only 38 metropolitan runners — this year to date to focus on a rebuild.
Head trainer Mark Walker has cycled 70 predominantly young horses in and out of work at Cranbourne including 46 juveniles.

'Imperatriz leaves a massive gap in any stable,' assistant trainer Ben Gleeson said.
'Basically we've got 46 two-year-olds turning three and we've only run four of them.
'We've been pretty patient … last year we basically had no more than 20 in work, whereas this year we averaged 40-50 and they're all basically two-year-olds.
'We have pretty much 42 horses to unveil hopefully this spring and a lot are owned outside Te Akau, we have had really good support from outside owners.'

The tangerine team burst on to the Melbourne racing circuit 18 months ago with champion sprinter Imperatriz and enjoyed continued success with stakes performers Sans Doute, Quintessa, Skew Wiff and Bellatrix Star.
Te Akau has The Mighty Spar and Prismatic accepted in the Grand National Hurdle on Sunday.
Leaderboard has been held over after initially being entered for the marathon.
Gleeson saddled three spring contenders for Caulfield jumpouts last Wednesday including Damask Rose, La Dorada and Samudra.
New Zealand Group 1 colt Return To Conquer, unbeaten in four career starts, is slated to have a jumpout at Cranbourne on Monday.

Return To Conquer is set to make his Australian debut in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) on August 16 at Caulfield.
The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day is the ultimate goal for the headline Snitzel colt.
'He's four from four and every one of those races has been a stakes race, culminating in a Group 1,' Gleeson said.
'He comes over here with a big reputation.'
Damask Rose is set to jumpout again before the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) on August 30 at Caulfield – Te Akau won the last year with Quintessa.
La Dorada could head straight to the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) on September 6 at The Valley.
'Still up in the air what we do with her,' Gleeson said.
'Fillies have a really good record in that (Moir) race, get in with 50kg and she's a tough filly.'

Gold Coast trainer Peter Robl has reset his goals after winning back-to-back Darwin Cup crowns with Hadouken
It took two days of celebrating his momentous back-to-back Darwin Cup victories before the haze cleared and trainer Peter Robl could focus on his next mission. The Gold Coast-based conditioner and his good mate, Victoria's premiership-winning jockey Blake Shinn, celebrated Hadouken 's Darwin Cup defence until sunrise at a local pub last week. 'Blake Shinn had to get on a 6am flight. If he didn't have to catch a plane we'd still be there,' the laconic Robl joked. While Hadouken is now resting in Katherine before he travels back to Robl's Gold Coast stables on Sunday, Robl is already back on the tools and plotting a valuable stakes victory for his talented mare Overfull. 'I'd like to win a stakes race with Overfull because I own half of her,' Robl said. 'She's spelling in Melbourne at the moment. 'She'll come back to Queensland soon and there's a couple of stakes races over the summer carnival that will suit her.' However, his career was abruptly cut short by a serious race fall at Scone in January 2014, resulting in a fractured back that forced him out of the saddle on medical advice. He transitioned into training and gained invaluable hands-on experience as a foreman for David Vandyke, overseeing the Segenhoe Racing stable at Randwick before eventually establishing his own operation on the Gold Coast in 2023. 'I was always going to head down this path and whether or not I'm successful, who knows?' Robl said. 'We're surviving and while we're surviving then we've got a chance.' 'Last preparation was aimed at getting back into the groove of things and was aimed at the Sydney Cup,' Kent Jr said. 'We got a good (3) track that day and she did not like it. 'She trialled well on Monday and we'll kick off in the Heatherlie (Handicap) at Caulfield. 'She's a very capable mare and she loves getting her toe in the ground. Flemington firms as 2026 Cox Plate destination with Moonee Valley Racing Club to consider recommendation
Moonee Valley Racing Club is set to anoint Flemington as its preferred host of the 2026 Group 1 WS Cox Plate (2040m). This masthead has established the MVRC hierarchy could meet as early as Wednesday to consider a recommendation to run Australia's best race at Flemington on October 24, 2026. MVRC chief executive Michael Browell has worked closely with corporate partners and the Victoria Racing Club to broker a historic race meeting transfer, in line with relevant commercial agreements. The Racing Victoria board must ultimately endorse the MVRC recommendation for Flemington to be officially unveiled as host of the $6m Cox Plate. The RV board is scheduled to meet next week to ratify the Cox Plate recommendation. The Valley will be closed after the Cox Plate this year to undergo a full racecourse redevelopment. The Cox Plate is slated to return to The Valley from 2027. The VRC, Melbourne Racing Club and Southside all entered the 2026 Cox Plate sweepstakes. The metropolitan clubs all pitched enticing Cox Plate proposals, however Flemington has long been the industry preferred choice based on metrics including wagering and attendance potential. Commercial in confidence negotiations included economics of a transferred Cox Plate, splits of costs and revenue, along with existing sponsorship agreements. Ladbrokes, subsidiary of global wagering giant Entain, is naming rights sponsor of The Valley and Cox Plate whereas Flemington has enjoyed a long partnership with Tabcorp. RV deferred Cox Plate decision talks in June as The Valley and Flemington administrations ensured respective commercial arrangements with corporate clients were satisfied. The MVRC recommendation, once approved, sets up a bumper Cox Plate-Melbourne Cup Carnival double-header at Flemington next year. The VRC has aspirations to host a 60,000-strong crowd for an iconic Cox Plate at Flemington. The Melbourne Spring Carnival overall enjoyed a renaissance last year, with big crowds and wagering across feature race dates at Caulfield, The Valley and Flemington. The Melbourne Cup Carnival – the four biggest days in Australian racing – attracted more than 285,000 patrons to Flemington last year – the biggest crowd since 2018. Browell was contacted for comment on Monday.
