BBC 'scrutinised over differing treatment of stars accused of offensive language'

Daily Mirror6 days ago
BBC bosses have been called out after MasterChef presenter John Torode appeared to receive harsher punishment than EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick over use of offensive language
Bosses at the BBC face a grilling over why John Torode and Jamie Borthwick were treated 'differently' after both stars used 'offensive language'. MasterChef star Torode, 59, was sacked by the broadcasting giant after a complaint John used " highly offensive racist language" was upheld. John denies the incident, which he says he has no recollection of.

EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick, 31, was suspended in June after 19 years playing fan favourite character Jay Brown when he was accused of using a slur targeted at disabled people while on the set of Strictly Come Dancing. However, now executives at the BBC are facing questions over why the pair have differences in their treatment with Torode losing his job entirely, while Borthwick faced a suspension.

A source has said:"The difference in treatment between John and Jamie - for very similar incidents - has left questions to be answered. The BBC have tied themselves into knots with this - for them both stars appear to have used unacceptable and offensive language but only one has been sacked while another has kept his lucrative salary and got away with just a suspension."

They continued to The Sun: "Disabled colleagues have been left wondering why incidents of ableist slurs seemingly aren't being taken as seriously as racist language and there are no clear answers coming from bosses."
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the BBC told MailOnline: "Whilst we do not comment on any individual matter, each case is always considered on its own facts. We are very clear on our expectations that inappropriate behaviour and language will not be tolerated."

A video obtained by The Sun last month saw Jamie captured describing the residents of Blackpool, where the show was filming at the time, as "m********s." Co-star Wynne Evans was reportedly backstage with Borthwick at rehearsals and heard saying "Oh my God" when he made the comment.
Borthwick has since apologised for using the term and admitted that he had not fully understood the derogatory nature of what he said and is now "deeply embarrassed." The soap actor said in a statement, which read: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly.
'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely.

'Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong." He went on to issue an apology to the people of Blackpool and reiterate his regret over his words. The Mirror has contacted a representative of the star for comment at the time.
Meanwhile, MasterChef star John Torode was sacked earlier this week after he came forward as the unnamed person in the firm Lewis Silkin's report, commissioned by Banjiay, into the conduct of John's co-host Gregg Wallace, following allegations of misconduct. The upheld complaint about John was "an accusation of highly offensive racist language against", which John has vehemently denied.

Torode has insisted "he had absolutely no recollection" of using the racist term. John denied the allegation in a statement which read: "Following publication of the Executive Summary of the investigation into Gregg Wallace while working on MasterChef, I am aware of speculation that I am one of the two other individuals against whom an allegation has been upheld.
"For the sake of transparency, I confirm that I am the individual who is alleged to have used racial language on one occasion. The allegation is that I did so sometime in 2018 or 2019, in a social situation, and that the person I was speaking with did not believe that it was intended in a malicious way and that I apologised immediately afterwards.
"I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened. However, I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. I'm shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence."
The BBC announced on Tuesday (July 15) that Torode's contract was not going to be renewed and he was later sacked from MasterChef.

Emmerdale fans blow holes in Owen and John 'suicide' twist

Fans of ITV soap Emmerdale have pointed out some plot holes in the latest part of John Sugden's (Oliver Farnworth) storyline. Last week, John learnt that Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh) were going to try and work out who killed Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). Desperate to keep their focus off him, John realised he needed to come up with a plan – and fast. That same day, John was asked to visit Owen Michaels' (Simon Haines) house as part of his work at the surgery. When he arrived, he found Owen – the guy who spiked Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) – unconscious on the sofa. John rushed to call an ambulance, but then realise another problem of his would be solved if he just…let Owen die. In the time it took for Owen's life to slip away, John had created a story that made Owen look like he killed Nate. John wrote a note on Owen's laptop that confessed to murdering Nate, as well as revealing why he did it. He then used antibacterial wipes to clean the laptop, the door handle and Owen's neck, to ensure his fingerprints would be removed from the scene. A few days later, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) went to check on Owen and found him dead. DS Walsh then arrived, and later told Tracy and Cain that this man killed Nate. It was a twist that left Cain and Tracy stunned. While they have no reason to not believe Walsh, fans of the ITV soap have certainly been struggling, as they noticed multiple plot holes in the scenes that saw John frame Owen, and what followed after. Taking to social media platform X, the point mentioned the most is John's effort to clean his fingerprints from Owen's house. It's possible a post-mortem would've been conducted on Owen after his death, to determine what he had in his system when he died. As a result of this and forensics checking the house, surely they would've noticed someone had cleaned Owen's neck, the laptop, and other areas? And therefore considered that he perhaps did not end his life? 'Did they notice that all the fingerprints on the laptop and Owen's hands had been wiped clean? #Emmerdale', one fan wondered. Another pointed out: 'He didn't seem to have his 'I'm a Medic' over shoulder pack with him that he's usually surgically attached to, just a smaller brown more casual looking bag. Not suss at all that certain areas have been wiped down, whether effective print/DNA wise or not #Emmerdale.' Also on X, audience members noticed that Robert mentioned Owen's confession in the pub…without actually being told about it. 'How did Robert know Owen confessed to killing Nate? Tracey and Cain haven't told anyone; John and Liam just walked in. Plot hole klaxon! #Emmerdale', they highlighted. This week, a suspicious Robert learnt from Owen's brother Steve that they were together in Hull the day Nate died. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? It proved someone else murdered him, but Robert grew frustrated when Steve said he didn't want to tell the police, due to him and Owen attending an illegal job in the city last year. More Trending In upcoming episodes, the theory that John is too good to be true is fuelled for Robert when he learns of the many times he has saved a villager's life. It leaves Robert in with a chance of exposing him but if John works out what's going on, will it end up being someone else? Perhaps it could be Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), given that he currently has no idea he's talking to John through the mental health charity? EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite reveals her eldest child, 17, is transgender in moving interview

EASTENDERS star Tamzin Outhwaite has revealed her eldest child, 17, is transgender in a moving new interview. The 54-year-old has two children with ex-husband Tom Ellis, Florence, 17 and Marnie, 12. 4 4 In a new interview, Tamzin revealed her eldest now identifies as a boy and goes by the name Flo. She said: " I've got two kids. I did have two daughters and now I have a son and a daughter. "That's quite easy for me to say now, but it wasn't maybe six or seven years ago." Tamzin - who played Mel Owen in EastEnders - added to the Parenting Hell podcast that Flo had come out as trans when he was "about 10 or 11". She continued: "The maddest thing is I suppose that it's not the most interesting thing about him. "He's an incredibly funny intelligent boy, and I'm watching him grow into a wonderful human who's very talented. "To see him thriving is just nothing but relief and joy for me really because there were some dark times." As the conversation continued with hosts Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe, she said: "Every situation is completely different, every child is different. "It really is less than one per cent of the population. There's this big up in arms thing. "It's not that common, just because…. But I'm just so happy for him." Tamzin Outhwaite reveals she's split from toyboy boyfriend after six years together During the podcast, Tamzin also spoke about her split from boyfriend of six years, Tom Child. She revealed he is still her 'best mate' and added: "[He] has been around for the whole of like Flo's transitioning period, for the whole of Marnie becoming a girl that was discovering all sorts of stuff and boys, and so he is still a member of the family. We've been not together for over a year. "The kids often say to him 'When you meet someone, or even if you have, how are you going to explain this situation to your girlfriends?'" 4 4

Tamzin Outhwaite reveals her child is transgender as she admits 'embarrassing' first reply

Tamzin Outhwaite has two children, Flo, 17, and Marnie, 12, with fellow actor Tom Ellis who she divorced in 2014. Tamzin Outhwaite has revealed for the first time that her eldest child is transgender. ‌ The Eastenders star admitted she was 'distressed' when Flo first came out seven years ago, but now finds it easy to say she has a son and a daughter rather than two daughters. ‌ Tamzin, 54, said she wishes she could go back and change her first reaction to the news. The actress said she found things 'very distressing' and she and Flo both went to family therapy to help work through it. ‌ She said: "The way I reacted at the very beginning I would love to change because I think until you're going through it yourself with your child it's very difficult to judge other people or to judge a situation because you don't expect that to happen to you or your child. "What I did initially, I was like 'don't be ridiculous', I didn't say don't be ridiculous but my mind went to 'that's ludicrous' and working back from that to talking through it" ‌ Outhwaite has two children, Flo, 17, and Marnie, 12, with fellow actor Tom Ellis who she divorced in 2014. Speaking on the Parenting Hell podcast, the 54 year old said: "I've got two kids and I did have two daughters and now I have a son and a daughter and that's quite easy for me to to say now but it wasn't maybe six or seven years ago. "We live in a very happy household now, full of jokes, and it's my favourite place to be at home. ‌ "You know they say that as a mum, probably as a parent, that you're only ever as happy and your unhappiest child and so with that in mind we have had some pretty unhappy years. "Now we're in a really wonderful place as a family, Flo is in a wonderful place as a brilliant actor, singer, writer, director in his sixth form at school, and Marnie is thriving. "So instead of just trying to get through difficult times we are now all thriving and the relief and joy is very tangible." ‌ She continued: "It was about when Flo was about 10 or 11 and the maddest thing is, I suppose, is that it's not the most interesting thing about him. "He's an incredible, incredibly funny, intelligent boy and I'm watching him grow into a wonderful human who's very talented and to see him thriving is just nothing but relief and joy for me really because there was some dark times." "Fab bit of family therapy, therapy on Flo's side so Flo was doing therapy as well. Speaking to other people and realising you weren't alone was a really, really helpful thing... ‌ "I became almost like a padded cell around Flo, almost going 'it's okay whatever you want, you want to do this, you want to do that, it's all okay', because I think if you push back on a kid they're going to want to do the opposite of what their parent says so I made everything a possibility. "I didn't say you can't be that but it was a very distressing time." ‌ Tamzin also added that whilst her six year old understood the change very quickly she feared the 'wrath' of her father who is now on board. "Marnie has been the most insightful about all of it because it's constantly, from pretty much day one when Marnie was six years old has said 'this is my brother Flo'. "Flo has many nicknames at school, all sorts of different things, all of the kids are so accepting of everything but I think they're much more understanding. "Whereas obviously there was a time, my dad's brilliant now and on board, but there was a time where I didn't want Flo to have the wrath of what my dad had to say about the whole thing."
