Chandler Jones, ex-San Jose State football star, dead at 33
He was 33.
Jones was identified as the victim in a pedestrian crash on the Marina Freeway in Los Angeles on Sunday, MyNewsLA.com reported, citing the Medical Examiner's Office. Authorities said Jones was struck and killed by a driver in a Toyota RAV4.
The incident occurred at 2 a.m. local time. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Forever in our hearts, #89," San Jose State Football wrote on its X account. "In loving memory of Spartan wide receiver and coach, Chandler Jones."
Jones, a Los Angeles native, finished his collegiate career with the Spartans as the school's all-time leader in receptions (248) and touchdown catches (31). He was the only player in the school's history to record at least 50 receptions in each of his four seasons with the Spartans.
He returned to San Jose State in 2017 as a defensive assistant.
"I coached for 50 years, and I've coached a lot of people and there's some really special ones, and he's at the top of the deal," ex-San Jose State wide receivers coach Terry Malley told the San Francisco Chronicle. "He brought a vibrancy to every day, he was passionate about it, and he was a great teammate. … Chandler was a really, really good human being.
"If you go through the 105 guys who were on our team, nobody would say anything bad about Chandler. I think they all wished that they attacked life the way he did."

CBS Sports puts Spartans low in 1-136 preseason rankings
The college football experts at CBS Sports are not high on the Spartans heading into next year. Would you say Navy is better than Michigan State? What about Memphis, UNLV or Texas State? The Dukes of James Madison? Those are all group of five programs ranked higher than the Spartans in CBS Sports' preseason 1-136 rankings. The poll that ranks every single team in the country has Michigan State coming in at No. 62 nationally -- which I personally consider too low for the Spartans. Among Big Ten teams, Michigan State is No. 14 out of 18 teams. That would be a very disappointing finish for the Spartans should they end the season ranked that low among their peers. Michigan State is coming off a 5-7 season last year, which was their third straight season of failing to reach a bowl game. There is, however, a lot of confidence within the program that things will go better for the Spartans this season, with making a bowl game being the minimum expectation. Michigan State will get its first chance to prove the doubters wrong this year in the season-opener against Western Michigan on August 29. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium for this matchup between the Spartans and Broncos is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Jussie Smollett calls Chicago PD and Rahm Emanuel 'villains' while denying hate crime hoax
Actor Jussie Smollett on Wednesday offered fresh criticism of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the city's former mayor, Rahm Emanuel, calling them 'villains' for their role in his conviction over an alleged hate crime hoax. Smollett, who is Black and gay, originally reported to Chicago police that he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack by two men wearing ski masks in January 2019. Advertisement He was convicted in 2021 of staging the hate crime himself, but it was later overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court on due process grounds, ruling that Smollett had originally reached an agreement with the state to avoid prosecution. The court did not rule on the actor's guilt or innocence in the case. 'The villains are the two people who assaulted me, the Chicago Police Department and, if I may be so brave, the mayor,' Smollett told Variety, referencing Emanuel, who served as the mayor of Chicago from 2011 to 2019. According to Variety, the former 'Empire' star alleged that the 'Chicago establishment' conspired to frame him and questioned whether Emanuel played a part in covering up evidence in the police killing of a Black teenager in Chicago — a case that led a federal judge to order the CPD to adopt dozens of reforms just two days after Smollett reported being attacked. Smollett also described how he felt once the CPD shifted its focus from investigating the alleged hate crime to investigating, and eventually arresting, the actor himself. The former 'Empire' star likened his experience to that of the late 'King of Pop,' Michael Jackson, who faced multiple sexual abuse allegations and police investigations before and after his eventual death, which Smollett suggested were part of a broader conspiracy.
