Dubai Airports trains 45,000 employees in autism-inclusive practices
Dubai Airports has expanded its autism-inclusive training programme, equipping 45,000 employees - across the wider airport community, including partners and stakeholders - to better assist autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers navigating Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International (DWC).
The initiative aligns with Dubai's broader ambition of becoming a Certified Autism Destination (CAD).
DXB is the world's first international airport to earn the Certified Autism Centre (CAC) designation, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and is also Autism-Certified by the Dubai Autism Centre (DAC).
The expanded training programme is part of Dubai Airports' wider strategy to ensure a supportive airport experience for guests with specific needs.
Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, said, "True inclusion starts with people. By investing and increasing specialist training by 36 per cent year-on-year, we are embedding a culture of understanding and proactive support across our airports."
He added that DXB and DWC are more than airports - they are Dubai's gateway to the world, shaping the first and last impressions of the city for millions of residents and visitors. "With this comes a responsibility: to ensure that every guest, regardless of their individual needs, feels supported and included."
The comprehensive, IBCCES-accredited training has been rolled out across the two airports. Frontline teams from Dubai Airports and key partners including Dubai Police, the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Customs, dnata, Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, and Dubai Taxi Company, Emirates, flydubai, in addition to other airlines and concessionaires operating from DXB have integrated the training into their operations, to create a consistent, supportive environment throughout the travel experience.
Employees are taught sensory awareness, effective communication, and techniques to reduce anxiety to enable them to better support and connect with neurodiverse individuals.
Trained Dubai Airports' Guest Experience Ambassadors, identifiable by Sunflower pins, are positioned at key touchpoints throughout DXB and DWC to provide specialised assistance and informed support to autistic guests and their families.
Throughout Autism Acceptance Month, DXB's Smart Gates, operated by the General Directorate of Identity and Foreign Affairs (GDIFA), are illuminated in blue in solidarity with the autism community. Sunflowers, an international marque for hidden disabilities, are also displayed across DXB terminals to promote awareness.
Dubai Airport's services include the DXB Travel Planner, an online visual guide that helps guests and families prepare for their journey in advance, and the Sunflower Lanyard, a discreet identifier for hidden disabilities that provides access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route through check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding.
Other key offerings include complimentary two-hour parking, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services, along with the Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2, a quiet, sensory-friendly space - all part of DXB's commitment to making travel accessible to everyone.

Manipal Academy of Higher Education Dubai's School of Engineering and IT signs Agreement with Vision Concept Aviation Training Institute to train future Aviation Engineers in Dubai Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Dubai has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vision Concept Aviation Training Institute (VCATI), a KHDA-approved and GCAA CAR147-certified aviation training provider, to introduce new industry-integrated learning opportunities for engineering students focused on aviation and avionics. Under this partnership, MAHE Dubai's School of Engineering and IT will host a fully equipped aviation and avionics laboratory on campus, providing students with access to real-world aircraft systems and simulation tools. In parallel, VCATI will offer month-long internships covering aircraft tool usage, maintenance practices, basic airframe and powerplant familiarization to prepare students for careers in one of the world's fastest-growing sectors. The global aviation industry is poised for robust growth primarily driven by the expansion of commercial fleets and increases in air travel, with the Middle East forecast to require over 235,000 new aviation personnel by 2043, including 68,000 pilots, 63,000 technicians, and 104,000 cabin crew, according to Boeing's 2024 Pilot and Technician Outlook. This partnership directly addresses the rising demand for industry-ready professionals by creating a pipeline of skilled talent equipped with both academic rigor and hands-on training. To support interactive learning, the lab will feature a computer-based training (CBT) software setup and calibrated tool cabinets, ensuring students are trained in an environment that closely mirrors real-world aircraft maintenance and avionics operations. The lab will be designed to align with Diploma-level aircraft maintenance engineering programs, exposing students to globally accepted safety standards and aviation technologies. Each year, around 15–20 students are expected to benefit from the internship program, which culminates in a certification titled 'Introduction to Aircraft Maintenance Engineering' from VCATI. The batch size per cohort will range from five to 18 students, ensuring personalized and hands-on learning. This MoU also paves the way for future collaborations such as faculty exchange, and student placement support, further strengthening the bridge between education and employment in the aviation sector. The figures reflect the emirate's position as a global transit and residence hub. Major General Talal Al-Shanqeeti, assistant DG of the Air Ports Sector, affirmed that the figures recorded during the Eid holiday reflect Dubai's steadily growing position as a preferred travel hub for passengers from around the world — thanks to the seamless coordination on the ground and the activation of smart systems across all entry points. 'We have made it a priority to ensure a seamless travel experience through smart gates and artificial intelligence technologies, which have contributed to speeding up procedures and improving the flow of movement.' He also emphasised that the travel experience has become part of our commitment to enhancing quality of life, in line with the Dubai government's approach to providing flexible services that meet individuals' expectations and enhance the readiness of its institutions. Here's a breakdown of the movement and what it says about Dubai's travel readiness: Total travellers during Eid: Between June 5 and June 8, 629,559 passengers arrived or departed through Dubai's air, land, and sea ports. Dubai International Airport led the traffic: 581,527 travellers passed through Hatta border crossing also saw high activity: 46,863 travellers crossed via the Hatta land port during the holiday period. Maritime ports handled modest traffic: 1,169 travellers entered or exited through Dubai's seaports. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) credited strategic coordination across the aviation and border sectors for managing the high volume with efficiency.
