It's been nearly 300 days since San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk last played a down of football.
The 49ers desperately need the star wideout, who tore his ACL and MCL in a Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, back in the lineup after trading Pro Bowl WR Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders during the offseason.
The rest of San Francisco's receiver corps is also banged up with Jauan Jennings battling a calf injury, Jacob Cowing a hamstring injury, and Equanimeous St. Brown placed on season-ending injured reserve with a foot injury.
While Aiyuk seems to be on track with his recovery, head coach Kyle Shanahan updates reporters on Monday as to when they can expect to see the All-Pro WR back in the team's lineup.
"49ers HC Kyle Shanahan estimated today to reporters that WR Brandon Aiyuk — who is recovering from a significant knee injury — could be back for Week 6," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.

Brandon Aiyuk #11 of the San Francisco 49ers catches a pass to score a touchdown during an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on December 3, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Aiyuk had just 25 catches on 47 targets for 374 yards last season (he had only one game with more than five receptions and 100 or more yards), and he was on track for just 60 receptions and 908 yards had he not gotten injured — a steep decrease from his previous two breakout years when he averaged 76 catches, 1,178 yards, and 7.5 touchdowns.
Aiyuk is one of many 49ers offensive skill position players including Jennings, Cowing, St. Brown, plus running backs Isaac Guerendo, Ameer Abdullah and Jordan James, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk, to find himself on the team' injured list during camp.

With Aiyuk out, 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall will likely step into his role at San Francisco's WR1, but another receiver to keep an eye on is Russell Gage, who's been a standout during training camp and caught Shanahan's eye.
"He's definitely given himself a chance; I think Russ had a really good offseason," Shanahan said, via 49ers on SI. "We got him last year to put on our practice squad, and you could see him throughout the whole year working to get his legs back and to get back in receiver shape and be able to handle the cuts after his injuries.
"I think the way he finished last year was really positive. He put the work in this offseason and I think he's back to being a really good NFL player now and fighting to make this team."

Jets' Tyrod Taylor out for preseason after 'minor' knee surgery; Allen Lazard set to miss 2 weeks

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor will be sidelined through the preseason after recent knee surgery, but the team expects he should be ready for the regular-season opener. Coach Aaron Glenn announced Tuesday after the Jets' joint practice with the Giants that Taylor had 'a minor scope' on the knee that has sidelined him the last week of training camp. 'He's still going through his protocols, as far as his rehab,' Glenn said. 'So we'll see exactly where he is in the next couple of weeks. I don't think he'll be playing in preseason, but hopefully he'll be ready for Week 1.' Justin Fields is the Jets' clear starting quarterback and has bounced back from a dislocated toe on his right foot early in training camp. Taylor, a 36-year-old veteran in his second season with the Jets, will serve as Fields' backup as long as he's healthy. The Jets' quarterbacks room is a bit banged up now. Rookie Brady Cook, an undrafted free agent from Missouri, has an ankle injury after his right foot was stepped on during practice with the Giants. He left the field after practice riding in the passenger seat of a cart, but Glenn downplayed the injury. 'I think he'll be just fine,' Glenn said. Adrian Martinez, in his second year with the Jets, is the only other healthy quarterback on the roster. New York will be without wide receiver Allen Lazard for at least two weeks after he injured his right shoulder during the Jets' 30-10 preseason victory at Green Bay last Saturday night. 'So we will see where his situation is going into Week 1,' Glenn said. Lazard is competing for the No. 2 wide receiver spot behind Garrett Wilson, but had been mostly quiet for much of camp before the injury. His roster spot was thought by some to be in jeopardy, especially with veterans Josh Reynolds, Tyler Johnson and Xavier Gipson on the team and youngsters such as Arian Smith, Brandon Smith, Jamaal Pritchett and Quentin Skinner flashing at times during practices. Mason Taylor time Rookie tight end Mason Taylor returned to practice just over a week after suffering a high ankle sprain that was expected to sideline him a few weeks. Taylor, a second-round pick out of LSU and the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, participated in individual, positional and team drills during the session with the Giants. He also made a terrific catch, diving for a ball along the left sideline on a throw from Martinez in drills. 'I think it was outstanding the way that he was able to reach and maneuver his feet to stay in bounds on that play,' Glenn said. "But the things I expect from him in the passing game, it's nothing new for that player. The thing is, he's got to make sure that he comes along at the right pace so we don't re-injure that ankle again. 'But he's a fighter and he wants to be out there. We're going to do everything we can to protect him the right way, but also let him go out there and get his work in. So I thought he had a hell of a day.' Jermaine Johnson's return Edge rusher Jermaine Johnson is being eased back to the field Tuesday after being activated from the active/physically unable to perform list Sunday. Johnson tore his right Achilles tendon in Week 2 last season, but is in position to play in this season's opening game. He didn't participate in team drills Tuesday. 'I feel great,' a smiling Johnson said. 'I feel ready to go, but I trust them. I like to say that they're backing the Ferrari off the truck a little cautiously right now. I understand it, but I'm ready to go.' Working their way back Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf) was back in uniform after missing some time, but didn't participate in team drills as he recovers from his injury. He spent some time with the trainers during practice. Defensive lineman Byron Cowart (ankle) also was among those sidelined, as were cornerback Azareye'h Thomas (shoulder) and running back Isaiah Davis (ankle). Left guard John Simpson returned to practice after missing over a week with a back issue. ___ AP NFL:

Ridley's TD catch in return to Atlanta is rare highlight for Titans in joint practice with Falcons

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — It didn't take former Atlanta receiver Calvin Ridley very long to make a big play in his return to his former home. It didn't take Falcons fans long to show they remember Ridley. Ridley opened Tuesday's joint practice between Tennessee and Atlanta by catching a long pass from Titans rookie Cam Ward for a touchdown, bringing instant cheers from fans who usually saved those responses for the home team. Ridley raised the ball in an apparent recognition of the fans' response. 'It was all right,' Ridley said of his return to the Falcons' practice facility near Atlanta. 'Old memories. Old faces.' Ridley was a first-round draft pick by Atlanta from Alabama in 2018 and teamed with Julio Jones to give the Falcons one of their most productive tandems at wide receiver in team history. He had 10 touchdown catches in his 2018 rookie season and set career highs with 90 catches for 1,374 yards in 2020. Ridley played in only five games in 2021, when he posted on social media he needed 'to step away from football at this time and focus on my mental well being.' He was suspended for the 2022 season for placing bets on games in 2021. He was traded to Jacksonville late in 2022 before finding a new home with Tennessee, where he agreed to a four-year, $92 million deal before the 2024 season. When asked Tuesday about his decision to 'step away' from football at the end of his time in Atlanta, Ridley said 'I was injured.' 'That's why I was going through what I was going through, OK,' Ridley said. "When you're injured and they want you to be really good, it's not easy. So that was what I was going through.' Ridley has had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with the Jaguars and Titans and, at 30, is a veteran for a Titans offense looking to rebuild behind Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft. Falcons second-year coach Raheem Morris was the team's wide receivers coach when Ridley was drafted. Morris served three seasons as the Los Angeles Rams' defensive coordinator before he was hired as Atlanta's coach last year. 'I was a Calvin Ridley fan when I left, I was a Calvin Ridley fan when I was gone and I'm a Calvin Ridley fan now,' Morris said Tuesday. The Titans and Falcons will have another joint practice on Wednesday before playing a preseason game on Friday night. The Titans, trying to improve from a 3-14 finish last season, had few highlights following Ridley's big catch to open the joint practice. 'We've got to go watch the film and see where we can execute better,' said Tennessee center Corey Levin, who said the Falcons 'have a pretty fired-up group over there. We have to come out fired up tomorrow.' The Titans are completing a two-week trip that began with a joint practice at Tampa Bay before Saturday night's 29-7 loss to the Buccaneers. Ridley said the Titans will benefit from extended time on the road 'because it's hard.' 'We don't feel good,' Ridley said. 'Everyone's sleeping in different beds. But we're putting it together. And having a day like this ... we want to do better. So we're going to come back and want to do better.' QB plans Morris said Falcons starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will be held out for the second straight preseason game on Friday. Morris said 'we'll talk about' possibly playing veteran backup Kirk Cousins, who also did not play in last week's 17-10 loss to Detroit. Ward completed five of eight passes for 67 yards in the loss to the Buccaneers. Linebacker transactions The Titans made four moves with linebackers. Khaleke Hudson and Blake Lynch were signed. Anfernee Orji was waived/injured and David Gbenda was waived. ___ AP NFL:

Travis Kelce is ready to tone down ‘party guy' image as his 13th NFL season begins

Travis Kelce is done fighting for his right to party. Or at least the 35-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end is ready to start toning down his party-hearty image — which is kind of big news for a dude who is known for his wild, celebratory, off-key renditions of the Beastie Boys classic '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)' and is often seen out enjoying life with superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift. Kelce made the revelation during a lengthy interview with GQ that was published Tuesday morning. 'I'm starting to phase out of wanting to be known as the party guy,' the three-time Super Bowl champion and 10-time Pro Bowl selection said. 'When you see me hanging out at the US Open with Taylor, it may look like the two of us are partying. But I'm just enjoying the fun of being at this really cool event that I always wanted to go to with the person that I love.' He added: 'I've become way more strategic in understanding what I am portraying to people.' Following the Chiefs' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX in February, Kelce didn't immediately commit to returning for his 13th NFL season and the final year of his contract with the Chiefs. He acknowledged to GQ that he has been thinking about his life after the NFL, although he didn't offer any details on what that might look like. Kelce already has a high profile off the field, thanks in large part to his relationship with Swift but also from his appearances in countless TV commercials and on his successful 'New Heights' podcast, which he co-hosts with older brother Jason. Incidentally, that podcast is sure to hit, uh, new heights in its number of listeners this week when Swift makes her first appearance on the show. Part of Kelce's new outlook on his image seems to have been influenced by Swift and the way she interacts with her immense fan base. 'People gravitate towards how she performs and how she makes it feel like the entire stadium is in a little room with her,' Kelce said. 'She is so good at mesmerizing everybody and making everybody feel like it's an intimate situation. I think that alone — there is so much calm and coolness. She's beautiful. She's up there making everyone feel at ease. 'Whenever I get in front of a crowd, I feel like I've got to be like, Woooo! Like, excited, bringing the energy. Then I saw that coolness and that calmness and that relatability that she is so good at presenting. I really grabbed that. Like, Man, I can use that side of entertainment as well. It's not just always being the guy that brings the energy and creates these exciting moments.' Kelce added that he and Swift share similar outlooks when it comes to their respective legacies. 'Nowadays I just want to be respected and loved by the people that I'm surrounded by in my work,' he said. 'I want to leave it better than where it was when I started. And I see her having those same values.'
