Riku, Kuldeep set for Asia Cup action
1 2 3 4 5 6 Lucknow: Two UP players, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav and batter Rinku Singh , have secured berths in the Indian squad for Asia Cup , to be played in UAE from Sep 8. The team was announced in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. Kuldeep, who was also a part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series in England, could not make it to the playing XI in any of the five Test matches. After the Indian Premier League in May, he was not seen in action in any official matches and now will head directly to Dubai for the Asia Cup, which will be played in T20 format. Rinku Singh has seen some action in the ongoing UPT20 League. He led the Meerut Mavericks in the inaugural match and bowled a couple of overs, taking one wicket. Talking to TOI, Kuldeep's coach Kapil Pandey said, "After the England tour he is in his home town (Kanpur) and doing a lot of net practice and playing friendly matches. He is fit and fine for the Asia Cup." "He is always a dominant force on Asian pitches and should do well again, like in the 2018 Asia Cup when he had the most wickets during the tournament. He is in form and India's number one spin bowler when playing in Asia," he said. Speaking about the squad, former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim said, "Inclusion of Shubman Gill is a good move. He has earned place in the T20 team on the sheer strength of his performance in the Test series in England. Being made the vice-captain, the team management and national selectors see him as an all format player-cum- captain." Asked about the middle order batter Rinku Singh, he said, "I'm glad he is being given another chance. The Indian team still believes in his value to the team. He bats well, has started bowling off-spin, and is an excellent fielder. You can place him anywhere in the outfield, and he has safe hands." "He has the quality to deliver a good performance," Karim told TOI on the sidelines of the UPT20 League where he is a commentator. On Kuldeep, he said, "In the Asia Cup, he will be the main bowler with Axar Patel. His wrist spinning quality was effective in every aspect. I hope he will perform well again and his contribution is so important for team India." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Kodagu supply line keeps K'taka going
Bengaluru: Kodagu has always been the cradle of Indian hockey. The district has produced several international players, including MP Ganesh, MM Somaya, SV Sunil and VR Raghunath, to name just a few. The Karnataka district has been a constant source of inspiration for future generations to continue to earn laurels for the state and country. No wonder that 11 players from Kodagu are part of Karnataka's 18-member squad in the ongoing Junior Men's National Championship in Jalandhar, Punjab. "It is a matter of pride for Kodagu, with so many players from the district featuring in the team. It is primarily because of the history and the legacy Kodagu players have created," coach Thanu Nanjappa told TOI. With one win and loss under their belt, Karnataka have advanced to the quarterfinals. Kodagu's Dhruva BS, who had played in the last Nationals, is leading the state side. "Right from the school level, hockey is popular in Kodagu. There are many competitions at various age levels. It allows young players a chance to showcase their talent," the 19-year-old Dhruva said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Compare Spreads: Bitcoin vs Ethereum CFDs IC Markets Learn More Vishwajith, another player from Kodagu, said: "Hockey has always been in our blood. Our family members are very supportive and they always motivate us, which keeps us going." The popularity of the sport in this district can also be attributed to the Kodava Hockey Festival, which has become integral to the community's culture. The competition within the community helps unite families and generations through the sport. It is unsurprising that youngsters from Kodagu travel to Bengaluru for trials, outnumbering people from other regions. Schools also play an important role in helping the budding talents hone their skills during the formative years. Impressive performances at the school level and in age-group competitions help them get selected to the sports hostels. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
