BBC won't televise massive Glastonbury set and gives four-word explanation
Glastonbury is once again taking over BBC airwaves as millions tune in to see performances from a star-studded lineup including Raye, Rod Stewart, Franz Ferdinand, and Olivia Rodrigo.
Yet, one legendary act's set will be absent from the BBC's broadcast. During Wednesday's (June 25) instalment of BBC Breakfast, correspondent Colin Paterson reported live from the festival, which was welcoming campers in anticipation of the weekend's events.
He informed viewers: "One other issue that has emerged over the last 24 hours is the BBC put out the timings for their TV coverage. One thing that really stood out was Saturday night.
"The headliner on Saturday night is Neil Young, he's playing the Pyramid stage. But, BBC One are going to be showing Charlie XCX's set from the other stage on BBC One on Saturday night."
Colin reminisced about Neil Young's declaration last year that he would play Glastonbury in 2025, only to retract his decision upon learning of the BBC's involvement.
A BBC spokesperson has now broken their silence on the matter, exclusively telling The Mirror: 'On Saturday on BBC iPlayer, our Glastonbury Channel and five streams for the main stages will bring a range of live performances to audiences. At the artist's request, we won't be live streaming Neil Young's set. Our plans, including those for our TV highlights shows and on-demand coverage, continue to be finalised right up to and during the festival.'
Neil had a change of heart and confirmed his appearance at the festival. BBC presenter Colin explained this week : "I asked Emily Eavis what was going on and she says she does not believe that Neil Young's set will be broadcast by the BBC.
"There's been all kinds of backstage wrangling and negotiations, but as things currently stand, Neil Young's headline set on Saturday night will not be broadcast by the BBC. Instead, they'll be showing Charlie XCX."
The Mirror revealed on Tuesday how the Heart of Gold singer, 79, was still wrangling with the BBC about what they could show amid fears it could be heavily cut.
It came after we told how a BBC schedule of live sets released to the public omits Young, while mentioning headliners such as Charli xcx and Doechii who play other stages on Saturday.
In another development, fans are now fearful after his last two European shows in Bergen, Norway, and Copenhagen, Denmark, were hit with sound problems.
Fans complained about a poor vocal mix. Some were also unhappy that on at least one of those shows, Neil didn't have any large screens for fans to see the action from the back of the crowd.
BBC bosses are said to be treading carefully after the star pulled out of the festival earlier this year citing concerns about the BBC's 'corporate control'.
He said in January: 'We were told that BBC was now a partner in Glastonbury and wanted us to do a lot of things in a way we were not interested in. It seems Glastonbury is now under corporate control and is not the way I remember it being.'
A BBC spokeswoman said: 'We aim to bring audiences as many performances as possible from the Pyramid Stage, and our schedules and plans continue to be finalised, right up to and during the festival.' Young has voices his concerns made principled stands recently. He blocked his music from Spotify for two years, saying a podcaster on the platform had spread vaccine misinformation.
When Young played Glastonbury in 2009 only five songs were televised. Speaking at the time Mark Cooper, then executive producer of the BBC's Glastonbury coverage, said: 'Neil Young's career has been conducted on his own terms.
'They believe in the live event and retaining its mystery and that of their artist. They have decided to make one song available online over the weekend to give a flavour of his set. That's Rockin' in the Free World and that's their decision. You probably won't find too many Neil Young performances available freely on TV or online.'

One worker at the Nikolus Tavern said of the first argument: 'We recognised him as the footballer Andy Carroll immediately. He seemed very drunk and furious with his partner. He was using very bad words. It was improper behaviour. The woman looked very upset.' Reports claimed that police arrived and took the former West Ham ace, who was "very calm" to one side for a chat. He was later allowed to return to Lou, who is a well-known celebrity hairstylist. However, hours later police were reportedly called again by staff after reports of damage to the couple's room at a £500-a-night boutique hotel. Officers are said to have escorted Andy to a local station for questioning but no arrests were made. Another source claimed Lou did not stay with her boyfriend that night. They said: "After the restaurant episode, there was another incident at the hotel. This time, the footballer went to the police station. We know the woman stayed somewhere else that night.' Meanwhile, a British holidaymaker who reportedly spotted the pair while out for a stroll accused Andy of being "very drunk" adding that he shouted at Lou: "I'm done with us!" Responding to the reports, Andy and Lou admitted that the police were called following their "heated discussion", however they insisted things had been "blown out of proportion", issuing a joint statement which read: "Whilst having a private dinner in a restaurant on a quiet holiday in Mykonos, we had a heated discussion of the sort that most couples have had on occasion. It quickly became apparent to the police that there was no reason for them to be there. 'We went outside the restaurant with them together as they insisted they wanted to 'look after' us. 'As far as we are concerned, the situation has been blown out of all proportion by an interested member of the public. No one was arrested, and no one was charged with anything. "We are very happy, in love and looking forward to our future together, and we are disappointed that a private disagreement has become a public matter.'

And after trying out Clinique's newest Almost Lipstick launch, Nude Honey, I think I've found the perfect summer lip product. Now, I will admit, I have never really been one for nude lipstick, I tend to favour a bold red when my skin is behaving (hello Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Vixen) in an attempt to enhance and brighten my usually quite pale complexion. On the days when I want something a little less va-va-voom, I opt for a lip balm to give my lips some much-needed nourishment. And they were well and truly met. Firstly, the formula is silky smooth and is both shiny and creamy. It feels super nourishing and hydrating on the lips and best of all doesn't leave their dry bits with a bit of a crispy cast that my trusty lip balm hasn't quite managed to eliminate (something red lipstick tends to accentuate). Of course, if £25 is a little steep, there are a number of tinted lip balms out there that'll help do the trick, for example Lanolip's pink Tinted SPF30 balm at £8.99 or KIKO Milano Coloured Lip Balm, £6.99. On first application, the colour is quite sheer and doesn't change the lip colour drastically but instead gives it depth. To add to its colour, let the lippy settle for a few minutes and then add to it - this should then create a deeper hue that is warm with brown undertones but it's too warm to wash me out. Although I will say the brand says that the colour of the lippy looks different on each wearer but is the ideal blend of warm and cool pigment. The emollient-rich formula leaves my lips looking subtly glossy - but not overly so - and without the stickiness a lip gloss delivers; a detail I love when it comes to lipsticks as it means I don't get strands of hair attached to my lips should a gust of wind blow my way. Its long and slender casing makes it convenient to carry in my handbag too as it's lightweight and slim. Plus, being relatively small - in comparison to more chunky lipstick shapes - the packaging offers elite precision during application. Now, having worn it a number of times to different occasions, one constant I noticed was that it doesn't last all day. After a few hours, I needed to reapply the product - although it wasn't too much of a bother and is typically the case with lipsticks anyway. It also may require a bit of lip liner too as I found that it bled out over my natural lip line, which needed touching up in the mirror. While I've not yet experimented with it over or under any other lip colours, as suggested by the website, I do enjoy the boost it gives my lips when worn alone and will definitely be incorporating it into my daily beauty regimen. Norton said: 'It's very f****** hard, but it happened in a very abrupt way, and it happened kind of to me, and I thought that I was on a path. 'I was about to have kids, about to get married, all that kind of stuff, and my life just turned around, completely changed direction. 'And I thought I lost the person, but I also lost the life that I was about to lead, and the kids that we named, all that kind of stuff. 'And actually, in the last year and a half, I have gone through the most monumental change as a result, and I feel like I've grown up, I feel like I've become a man. 'I suddenly feel like I've grown up, I found some friends, relationships, the outpouring of love from my family around me was amazing. 'I ended up going to a Buddhist retreat in the south of France called Plum Village, anyone been to Plum Village? If you haven't, you should go. 'It's the best place in the world, and I went because I was in this pit of pain, and now I have this community. 'It's a Zen Buddhist community, it's amazing, and if you haven't gone, really look it up, it really does change your life. 'But so much has been born from that massive, radical change.' Norton, who also played Sidney Chambers in ITV drama Grantchester, has been romantically linked to 36-year-old English actress Imogen Poots and artist Charlotte Rose Smith. During the chat, he added: 'I was very much like the furious optimist, it was hard, I love that person (the unnamed woman) so much, and I will always love her, she's amazing, and we will have a relationship forever I hope, and there's no resentment. 'And actually, in a weird way, I kind of owe her so much, because she was the one who took it upon herself to make that massive decision, and she gave me a gift, she gave me this opportunity to grow up.' The London-born actor starred as Tommy Lee Royce in BBC drama Happy Valley, and has also appeared in Doctor Who, crime drama McMafia and sci-fi drama The Nevers.
