ST. LOUIS — In case there were any concerns with how Paul Goldschmidt's sprained knee would affect his hitting, he answered them with each passing hit Sunday afternoon.
Making his first start since injuring his right knee last Tuesday, Goldschmidt put together a three-hit game with a pair of doubles to help send the Yankees to an 8-4 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
'Obviously for us to get the win, for me to get a couple hits, it was good,' Goldschmidt said. 'I tried not to, but definitely it was a little bit in the back of my mind. But you just go play. I knew there was no extra added risk to playing. So just go play and try to play well.'

Goldschmidt had entered Friday's game as a defensive replacement at first base, which manager Aaron Boone later said he was even a little reluctant to do — after the Yankees initially feared this was something that was going to land the 37-year-old on the injured list.
But by Sunday, he was cleared to return to the lineup and made his impact felt.
'I really wasn't worried about the knee,' he said. 'But there's this weird subconscious when you had hurt something or your body maybe wants to test it out a little bit. I'd hit fine, I'd done defense, but to get out there and play nine, it was good. I wouldn't have told Booney and them I was ready if I thought I was going to jeopardize our team or even myself.'

Goldschmidt, the ex-Cardinal who received a standing ovation before his first at-bat in his first start back at Busch Stadium, doubled in the fourth inning to key a three-run rally and later added another double in the ninth that drove in an insurance run.
'That's classic Goldie right there,' Boone said. 'He flashed it today.'
After starting 46 straight games, Anthony Volpe got a breather Sunday as José Caballero stepped in at shortstop.

Volpe eventually entered the game in the ninth inning as a pinch runner for Giancarlo Stanton, scored a run and then played shortstop in the bottom of the frame.
Volpe, who has typically responded well to the rare days off he has gotten in his career, was stuck in a 7-for-47 (.149) skid over his past 13 games before Sunday.
Jonathan Loáisiga (mid-back tightness) began a rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, throwing 16 pitches in a scoreless inning. … Fernando Cruz (oblique strain) made his second rehab appearance in that game, giving up two runs in an inning while throwing 20 pitches. … Amed Rosario (SC joint sprain) got pregame defensive work Sunday and is expected to be activated off the injured list Tuesday, when first eligible.

Director of catching Tanner Swanson was ejected in the fourth inning by third base umpire Vic Carapazza.
Multiple Yankees were barking about a called third strike to Trent Grisham, and eventually Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas stepped off the mound and pointed while walking toward the Yankees dugout, at which point Carapazza tossed Swanson.

Clock ticking for Arizona Cardinals with cutdown deadline eight days away

Howard Balzer goes through each position, breaking them down by likelihood of making the roster. All NFL teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by 1 p.m. Arizona time on August 26. For the Arizona Cardinals, several decisions will be impacted by injured players, including those currently on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Any players placed on reserve/PUP at the cutdown must miss at least the first four games of the season and can't practice while on reserve. With 91 players currently on the roster, there will likely be several reductions made prior to the 26th. That total includes international player, tackle Roy Mbaeteka, who could be the team's 17th player on the practice squad. The waiver period ends earlier than normal after the cut to 53, which is 9 a.m. Arizona time Aug. 27, rather than 1 pm. Practice squad spots can then be filled once players clear waivers. All teams can have six veterans on the practice squad. Those players aren't part of the waiver system as their contracts are immediately terminated. Here is a look at the Cardinals' current roster. It's not a prediction of the 53, but rather the 40 position players considered safe and 17 hoping to survive cutdown day, knowing that there will be roster churn after cutdown day. Many in the 'maybe, maybe not' category will end up on the practice squad. It should never be called the 'final' cut. Wide receivers Tight ends Offensive lineman There are tough choices here with the severity of knee injuries to Conner and Jones unknown. Running backs Quarterbacks If Tune is waived, will the Cardinals sign him to the practice squad. They did last year with Desmond Ridder. Total: 20 rock solid, 7 maybe, maybe not, 3 injured Defensive linemen Jones has been sidelined by a knee injury, while Nichols and Nolen have yet to practice during training camp. Linebackers Defensive backs One of the more intriguing battles is between Crawford and Blount. They both deserve to be on the roster because of their special-teams prowess. Total: 20 rock solid, 10 maybe, maybe not, 4 injured Specialists Overall total: 43 rock solid, 17 maybe, maybe not, 7 injured Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. 1 Mariners' player who will make or break 2025 playoff chances

The post 1 Mariners' player who will make or break 2025 playoff chances appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Seattle Mariners made two of the biggest deals of the MLB trade deadline, picking up Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor. The corner infielders came from the Arizona Diamondbacks in separate deals. Seattle has been unstoppable in August, but Suarez has struggled. If the Mariners are going to return to the postseason for the second time since 2001, Suarez has to be the elite bat he was in his first stint with the club. The Arizona Diamondbacks struggled to start the season and fell way out of the competitive National League Wild Card race. They traded a lot of their pending free agents at the deadline, including Naylor and Suarez. The Mariners paid up to get both of them, dealing from a highly rated prospect pool to improve two key positions. But Suarez, one of the biggest names dealt across the league, has been terrible since returning to Seattle. In 106 games with the Diamondbacks this season, Suarez hit 36 homers, drove in 87 runs, and posted a .897 OPS. In 11 games with the Mariners, his .098/.136/.195 slash line with one homer and six RBI has fans panicking. Naylor did not have a stretch that poor this season in Arizona. Still, Seattle is 10-1 since the deadline. Seattle has traditionally been a difficult park to hit in, but Suarez spent two seasons with the Mariners before his tenure in Arizona. He should be familiar with T-Mobile Park, but his .331 OPS is not going to help them make the postseason. And when the postseason comes around, Suarez needs to turn it on to help them finally make a run. The Mariners bought in on this season at the MLB trade deadline. They have barely had any success since 2001, winning only the Wild Card series in 2021, and need a jolt. Suarez should be enough on paper, but has not been recently. The Mariners are flying high despite Eugenio Suarez's slump Despite the slump, the Mariners have tied the Houston Astros for first in the AL West. They have not won the division since their historic 2001 campaign, and could unseat Houston in the division. Suarez was brought in before the 2022 season to get Seattle over the hump, and he did exactly that. His 31 homers, 87 RBI, and .791 OPS were massively important to their regular-season success. He had a .981 OPS in five playoff games that season. Naylor has taken over as the engine of the lineup behind Cal Raleigh since the MLB trade deadline. In 16 games with the Mariners, he is hitting .286 with a .908 OPS and 11 RBI. First base was a black hole offensively before the deadline, with a .682 OPS from Rowdy Tellez as the highlight, and Naylor has fixed that. If both ex-Diamondbacks can get rolling at the same time, the Mariners can steal the division. The Mariners' pitching staff has been a key factor in their competitive regular seasons in recent years. Luis Castillo, Dryan Woo, George Kirby, and Logan Gilbert make an elite playoff pitching staff. Their offense has been anemic in previous years, with the second-lowest team batting average in 2024. If the Mariners get great offensive output from Suarez, Nayor, and Cal Raleigh, they can count on their pitching to bring them over the line. Other teams do not have the pitching depth that Seattle has, especially if they land in the three-game Wild Card round. They could lineup a rested Castillo for Game 1, helping cancel out the advantage the division winner has by getting the bye. The Mariners should cruise to a playoff berth and could challenge the Astros for the AL West title. But for them to make a deep run, Suarez and Naylor will have to pick up the offense down the stretch.
