Kerala aims to become Carbon neutral by 2050: CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 10 (UNI) Kerala aims to become carbon neutral by 2050, and the Green Budget 2025 of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, introduced as part of sustainable development initiatives, is a major step towards achieving this goal, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. 'Thiruvananthapuram has become the first city in Kerala to implement a Green Budget. The budget outlines activities in the city aimed at limiting carbon emissions, serving as a model for other local bodies,' the CM said. He was speaking after inaugurating the seed ball manufacturing project implemented by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and launching the Green Budget 2025 at Putharikandam Maidan yesterday. The Chief Minister said discussions on climate change and natural disasters are taking place across the world. However, there is still no global consensus on combating climate change. 'Even at the UN Climate Change Conference, no clear guidelines were formulated. Instead of waiting for such global agreements, we are moving ahead with our own actions,' he added. He stated that incentives are being provided for electric vehicles, along with the promotion of green hydrogen hubs and renewable energy sources. The Corporation's work to make Thiruvananthapuram a solar city is commendable. As part of this, solar panels are being installed on government office buildings at a cost of ₹125 crore. Electric buses are being purchased, and the Corporation has procured and distributed 100 electric autorickshaws. Such initiatives will help Thiruvananthapuram become one of the fastest-developing cities, he said. The seed ball campaign had planned to involve 6,000 students, but an additional 1,000 students joined. The seed balls they prepared will be planted in office premises and barren lands under the 'Green Trivandrum' concept. By depositing four lakh seed balls across various parts of the city, large-scale tree growth can be encouraged. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that such activities to tackle environmental challenges would also help create significant eco-friendly awareness. UNI DS RKM

Thiruvananthapuram Corporation's climate budget outlines projects to reduce the city's carbon footprint

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday (August 9) released the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation's climate budget, which outlines sustainable projects to be taken up to reduce the city's carbon footprint. The corporation became the first local body in the State to have a budget focussed on addressing climate change and related issues. Mr. Vijayan said that the Corporation's climate budget which raises awareness on ways to overcome the climate-change related challenges can be a model for other local bodies. 'Although climate change-induced disasters are being witnessed the world over, there is still no united response at the international level to fight it. The happenings at the UN's COP 29 Climate Change conference last year are proof of this. No clear guidelines came out of the conference. Such decisions are also not to be expected in the near future. In such a scenario, it is important to not wait for such directives and evolve our own methods at the local level to address climate change and issues that arise due to it. We are working towards turning Kerala into a carbon neutral State by 2050. The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation's initiatives are part of this,' he said. He said that the initiatives that the Corporation has already taken up are a good first step for Thiruvananthapuram, which is one of the fastest developing cities in Kerala. Mayor Arya Rajendran, who presided over the event, said that the comprehensive climate budget is a continuation of the various steps the Corporation has taken in recent years. 'The Corporation purchased 115 electric buses for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). We also bought electric auto rickshaws for beneficiaries from the below poverty line families. Since streetlights are one of the biggest sources of carbon emissions, over the past few years we shifted gradually to LED streetlights. For collection of waste, we are in the process of providing 100 electric vehicles to cover all the wards. The Corporation has also installed solar panels on the top of government buildings in the city, with a total capacity of 17,000 Kilowatt. In addition to this, we have also decided to provide ₹10,000 subsidy for installing solar panels in households and for purchasing electric two wheelers,' said Ms. Rajendran. On the occasion, over 7,000 school students from the city got together at the Putharikandam maithanam to make seed balls, mixing mud and seeds, which will be spread in open spaces all over the city as part of a mass greening activity.

No global consensus on climate action; Kerala moves ahead: CM Vijayan

Last Updated: Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 9 (PTI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday said there is no unified international consensus on tackling climate change; therefore, the state is taking independent steps to become carbon neutral by 2050. The chief minister made the statement after inaugurating the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation's 'Seed Ball Project' and releasing its 'Green Budget' here. Vijayan said both the seed ball project and the green budget are model initiatives that other local bodies can adopt to help the state achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. He also noted that Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has earned the distinction of being the first local body in Kerala to implement a green budget. The chief minister explained that the green budget clarifies how various initiatives by the corporation contribute to reducing carbon emissions, what more can be done, and the expected outcomes. As part of the seed ball project, 14 lakh seed balls have been planted across the state capital, promoting large-scale afforestation in the region, he added. Vijayan further stated that challenges such as climate change and resulting natural disasters affect nations worldwide, but 'there is no united consensus on dealing with climate change at the international level." He cited the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22 last year, as an example. He said no clear guidelines on combating climate change were formulated at the summit and added, 'If we keep waiting for decisions from them, things will never happen." 'So, without waiting for it, we need to take steps on our own. These include encouraging the use of electric vehicles, setting up green hydrogen hubs, and utilising renewable sources of energy," he said. Vijayan praised the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for taking several steps toward achieving carbon neutrality and making the state capital a solar city, calling its efforts commendable.
