At least 12 dead in Indonesia bus crash after brakes apparently failed, police say
The inter-province bus was on its way to Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, from Medan in North Sumatra province when its brakes apparently malfunctioned near a bus terminal in West Sumatra's Padang city, said Reza Chairul Akbar Sidiq, the director of West Sumatra traffic police.
He said police were still investigating the cause of the accident, but survivors told authorities that the driver lost control of the vehicle in an area with a number of steep hills in Padang after the brakes malfunctioned.
The 12 bodies, including those of two children, were mostly pinned under the overturned bus, Sidiq said. All the victims, including 23 injured people, were taken to two nearby hospitals, he said.
Thirteen of the injured were treated for serious injuries, Sidiq said. The driver was among those in critical condition.
Local television footage showed the mangled bus on its side, surrounded by rescuers from the National Search and Rescue Agency, police and passersby as ambulances evacuated the injured victims and the dead.
Road accidents are common in Indonesia because of poor safety standards and infrastructure.
Last year, a bus carrying 61 students and teachers returning from an outing to a high school in Depok, just outside Jakarta, slammed into cars and motorbikes after its brakes failed, killing 11 students and injuring dozens of others. In 2023, a tourist bus with an apparently drowsy driver slammed into a billboard on a highway in East Java, killing at least 14 people and injuring 19 others.

The 42-year-old from Peru, identified only as NS, was allegedly busted with 1.4kg of cocaine and 43 ecstasy pills at Bali's international airport on August 12. Police allege NS was paid nearly $30,000 to smuggle the drugs into Bali by someone she met on the dark web in April. Indonesia is known for its incredibly harsh drug laws and executing those who attempt to smuggle drugs into the country. The most memorable case for Aussies would be the firing squad deaths of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran in 2015. The two Australians were part of the Bali Nine, a group accused of attempting to smuggle heroin out of Indonesia in 2005. However, Indonesia has upheld a pause on death penalties since 2017 after facing intense international criticism.

Mechanic father-of-two, 27, was crushed to death while working on car at home, inquest heard
A mechanic father-of-two was crushed to death while repairing his own car when the axle stand propping up the vehicle gave way. Daniel Burton, 27, was discovered unresponsive and trapped under the Audi A3, at his partner's home in Skewen, Neath Port Talbot, on January 22, an inquest has heard. Despite the efforts of emergency services, Mr Burton was pronounced dead at the scene, WalesOnline reported. The inquest heard how the keen mechanic had that day attended college where he was working towards an MOT qualification, before enjoying time with his partner and children at Penlan Leisure Centre. When they returned home, Mr Burton was said to be keen to fit a part that had been delivered for his car despite it being dark outside. Passersby told Guildhall court in Swansea that they had seen the vehicle - which was parked on a sloped street - propped up on the driver's side, while the rear wheels had been removed. They had seen Mr Burton lying on his back underneath the car. One commented she had thought the car looked 'unsafe' but did not want to intervene. At around 6.30pm, a local resident stopped to ask the mechanic if he had spotted her recently-stolen car in the nearby streets - but she received no response from him. She ran off to find help and a neighbour arrived with a jack in an attempt to lift the car off Mr Burton. They also informed his partner as to what had happened. Emergency crews arrived at the scene, but were unable to save the father-of-two and he was pronounced dead at 6.53pm. A police investigation found that one of the axle stands under the car was lying on its side, while a postmortem determined he had died from 'crush asphyxiation'. The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death. Tributes posted at the time of the tragedy described Mr Burton as a 'beloved son', 'cherished partner' and 'devoted father', adding he would be 'greatly missed by all his family and many friends'. He was 'passionate' about football and had played for Neath Town, Aberavon Greenstars and more recently, Cilfrew Rovers. A fundraising appeal, organised by local sports clubs that Mr Burton was involved with, raised more than £3,000 for his grieving family. Organisers said: 'Dan was an amazing person, he would light up every room he entered and he will be sorely missed by so many. 'He was a down to earth person, a great friend, a great father and will be a tremendous loss to everyone that knew him.'

Perth woman in her 30s is allegedly stabbed to death in suspected domestic violence attack
A woman has been fatally stabbed in a Perth home as police probe whether it was a domestic violence attack. Emergency services were called to a property in the north-eastern suburb of Bassendean about 12.30pm on Wednesday, where they found a woman in her 30s. She was critically injured after what is understood to have been a stabbing, Nine News reports. Among the emergency services were six ambulances that attended the property. The woman was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital to undergo emergency surgery during the afternoon but she later died. A man in his 20s, who was known to the woman and treated at the scene, has been helping police with their inquiries. No charges have been laid.
