Red Warriors gear up to battle S Korea in WC qualifiers

Observer17-03-2025
MUSCAT: Red Warriors are underway in their daily training sessions in Goyang City in South Korea under the watchful eyes of experienced national head coach Rasheed Jaber. The team will conduct their third straight training session at the Goyang Stadium on Tuesday ahead of their crucial AFC Asian of the World Qualifiers — Road to 26 against the hosts South Korea on Thursday.
The Oman team delegation arrived in Seoul city on Friday and six days in advance for the encounter in order to ensure the team's adaptation to the climate and time change of five hours compared to Oman.
The team will conduct their third straight training session at the Goyang Stadium on Tuesday.
During the last two training sessions, coach Rasheed and his assisting team worked hard to finalise the starting line-up of the team including the suitable player who will cover the absence of experienced midfielder Harib al Saadi, who will not be available for Thursday's clash due to yellow cards. Oman's two professional players including Mohsin al Ghassani of Bangkok United SC and Issam al Subhi (Iraqi Air Force Team or Al Quwa Al Jawiya) joined the team's training sessions. Rasheed will study several proposals for covering the centre of the middle line after Harib's absence by adding Abdullah Fawaz and Arshad al Alawi.
Despite the difficulty of South Korea assignment, the runner-up of last edition of the Gulf Cup in Kuwait are in perfect shape to impress in Goyang City. Oman's striking line-up features top stars including Mohsin al Ghassani, who impressed in the Thailand league besides Issam al Subhi, who shined in the recent Gulf Cup. Seeb star Abdulrahman al Mushaifri delivered top show in the last few matches with his team at AFC Challenge Cup and with the national team too. Al Munthir al Alawi and Salah al Yahyaei are back to the national team squad with top records after an absence for a while and this will give a good motivation for the team to bounce back strongly in the qualifiers.
Coach Rasheed
The Red Warriors target is to secure positive results in the upcoming two matches against South Korea and Kuwait on Thursday and Tuesday respectively to boost their chances of securing direct or indirect slots for the World Cup qualification. The first two teams in each group of the Asian qualifiers will secure direct spots while third and fourth place will enter additional qualifying stages.
Oman are currently placed fourth in Group B, with six points from two wins and four defeats. South Korea are topping the group with 14 points while Iraq are second with 11 points. Jordan are in third place with nine points.

Former Pakistan cricket team captain loves peaceful Oman

Muscat: Former Pakistan cricket Team captain and veteran batter Syed Inzamam ul Haq was on a short trip to Muscat to take part in the Pakistan's Independence Day celebration organised by the Embassy of Pakistan at Inter City Hotel on Wednesday. Coming to Oman after a gap of almost 33 years, Inzamam was glad to see the city and many things almost in the same shape, as he saw way back in 1992-93. Even though this was a two-day trip, the former Pakistan team captain fell in instant love with the peaceful nature of the city and he decided that he will make another trip to the country. He said that he has heard about the natural beauty of the Sultanate of Oman, and desired to explore the entire country soon. When asked about the dismal state of Pakistan cricket, he said that while looking at the encounter against West Indies in Trinidad which they lost by 202 runs, the condition of this team doesn't look good. 'But it's good that younger people are getting an opportunity. They are a talented lot and can perform better in the future. What I feel today is that whenever a team is made, it's a combination of juniors and seniors. If you maintain a proper balance between these two, Insallah the performance of the team will improve day by day. 'The main problem with the players today is that they are lacking confidence. In cricket, even if a player is very talented, if he feels that after playing two or three matches, he will be thrown out, his performance will go down.' He said that there is no dearth of talent in the Pakistan team, they are only lacking confidence. Babar is also suffering from a similar problem, he said, adding when you play for very long, a bad patch will definitely come in your career. 'Babar is a world class player, he needs your backing. If you support him, he will bounce back to form soon and perform much better than in the past,' Inzamam concluded.

Red Warriors gear up for Türkiye WC Camp

MUSCAT, AUG 16 Oman's national football team, the Red Warriors, will embark on an important stage of their preparation journey as they will travel to Türkiye on Wednesday for a week-long external training camp. The camp, announced earlier by head coach Carlos Queiroz during his first press conference, will form a critical part of the build-up to the decisive AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road to 2026. The Türkiye camp will run for seven days, after which the squad will fly directly to Uzbekistan to take part in the upcoming Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations League 2025, scheduled to kick off from August 26 to September 9. Oman has been drawn in Group A alongside host nation Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan. Group B consists of Iran, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and India, following Malaysia's withdrawal. According to Hussain al Zadjali, a member of the national team's administrative staff, discussions are ongoing with several Turkish clubs to arrange friendly matches during the camp. Among the proposed fixtures is a friendly scheduled for August 26, though official confirmation from the Turkish side is still awaited. Such matches will provide Oman with valuable competitive exposure and help head coach Queiroz further evaluate his squad under match conditions. The Portuguese tactician, who was recently appointed as the Red Warriors' head coach and technical manager, is expected to announce his second squad for the camp following the completion of the first round of the Oman Elite League, which commenced on Saturday. This timing may allow him to observe local players in competitive action before finalising his choices. However, the camp in Türkiye will not feature some of Oman's overseas-based professional players. Striker Mohsin al Ghassani, currently playing in Thailand for the Bangkok United club, will not join the camp due to club commitments. Midfielder Al Munther al Alawi, a key figure for Jordan's Al Wahdat, is also unavailable, alongside Khalid al Buraiki and Abdulrahman al Mushefri, both of whom are plying their trade with FC Artis Brno in the Czech Republic. Their absence, though significant, will open the door for young local talents to impress Queiroz and stake a claim for a spot in the final roster for the qualifiers. The Turkish camp is being seen as a vital stepping stone in Oman's broader strategy to build momentum ahead of the crucial AFC qualifiers in October, where the national team will face Qatar and the United Arab Emirates in Group A matches hosted in Doha in the coming October. Coach Queiroz already underlined the importance of instilling discipline, tactical awareness and physical readiness in the squad. The Türkiye camp will therefore focus not only on fitness and tactical drills but also on strengthening team cohesion, especially as the squad will continue to integrate new faces from the Olympic team. As the countdown to the qualifiers is underway, the Red Warriors' preparations are steadily intensifying. The Türkiye camp will represent an opportunity for the squad to test themselves, refine their strategies and align with Queiroz's vision as Oman will seek to achieve the dream of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in history.

Oman U20 team begins training under coach Hamed

MUSCAT, AUG 15 The Oman Under-20 team commenced their first training session on Tuesday night at Seeb Stadium under the technical guidance of the newly appointed head coach, Hamed al Azani, who is also in charge in the coaching staff of the national senior team as assistant coach. Al Azani is supported with local experienced coaching staff comprised of Badar al Maamari and Mansoor al Jabri as assistant coaches while Mohammed al Zedi as goalkeeping coach and Nasser al Abri as fitness coach. The opening warm-up session commenced with a welcoming address from coach Al Azani who instructed the players to give their utmost performance during the camp. Following the end of the domestic football season and the players' return to the team after a long absence, the session placed significant emphasis on stretching, fitness work and regaining peak physical condition. The coaching team focused on raising the players' fitness levels, rebuilding their technical and tactical abilities; and fostering harmony and understanding among squad members. The purpose of the camp is to gear up the players for the inaugural Under-20 Gulf Cup, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia from August 28 to September 10, 2025. The domestic training camp, running until next Saturday (August 23), marked the team's return to action after a long absence from competitive football. The scheduled gathering is a crucial step in Oman's preparations for the Gulf Cup, where they will compete in Group B alongside Iraq, Bahrain and Egypt (guest team). Oman's campaign will begin with a match against Egypt on August 29, Bahrain on September 1 and Iraq on September 4. Group A features Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Yemen. The current camp will offer the coaching team an opportunity to evaluate individual talents, enhance team cohesion and instil the tactical discipline required for regional and continental challenges ahead. Oman U20 Squad: Riyadh al Tarshi, Hussam al Naabi, Al Waleed al Abdulsalam, Firas al Saadi, Ahmed al Omrani, Osama al Maamari, Amed al Rawahi, Al Yazen al Balushi, Mohammed al Mashakheyi, Yazen al Khaldi, Abdulaziz al Balushi, Ibrahim al Tamimi, Ali al Owaini, Al Hassan al Qasmi, Fahad al Mashakehyi, Al Waleed al Buraidi, Ibrahim al Shamsi, Ziyad al Matani, Abdullah al Wahabi, Ali al Alawi, Mohammed Ghanim, Momen al Souli, Fahad Bait Rabee, AbdulRahman al Busaidy, Sulieman al Kharousi, Tamim al Buraii, Muzun al Hinai and Al Waleed al Rashdi.
