SINGAPORE, April 22 (Bernama) -- In a strategic push to build momentum ahead of Visit Johor Year 2026 (VJY 2026), more than 100 key trade partners from Johor and Singapore gathered for a business-to-business (B2B) networking session hosted by the Johor Economic, Tourism and Cultural Office Singapore (JETCO) here on Tuesday.
JETCO executive chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the event aimed not only to foster collaboration and joint ventures but also to update tourism industry players in the republic on Johor's tourism initiatives and infrastructure development.

'With the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, it is timely for the tourism industry to encourage trade associations and tourism companies to work together and complement each other because of the changing patterns of travel.
'Instead of looking at Malaysia as a competitor, we can complement each other,' he told Bernama at the event.
Hasni added that Johor could also learn from Singapore's approach to sustainable tourism as outlined in the Singapore Green Plan 2030, particularly as the state places increasing focus on sustainability.
Meanwhile, Johor State Executive Councillor (EXCO) for Unity, Heritage, and Culture, K. Raven Kumar, said that Johor is embracing smart tourism technologies, such as mobile apps, digital platforms, and interactive way-finding tools, to enrich visitors' experiences and make travel more accessible, intuitive, and engaging.
He said that, in line with the goals of VJY 2026, the state government is spearheading a unified effort across the tourism ecosystem, encompassing ecotourism, family attractions, wellness, and cultural exploration.
'This momentum will be powered by public-private partnerships strengthened further by the support of regional allies,' he added.

Sg Pontian Besar Bridge upgrade to begin in October

PONTIAN: The project to upgrade the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge from two lanes to four lanes is expected to begin as early as October, said Deputy Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. The deputy minister said the RM49 million project is expected to be completed within three years, involving the widening of the 250-metre bridge's lanes, including the road leading to the bridge. 'I would like to inform you that the government has agreed to widen the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge from two lanes to four lanes, and construction will begin at the end of this year. 'All tender matters and so on will be handled in September or October. We will invite Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi for the project's groundbreaking ceremony, which is expected to be in October,' he told reporters after conducting a working visit to the bridge here today. He said the project was important to avoid congestion between the two main bridges in the district. Elaborating further, Ahmad said the new bridge will also feature landmark elements or iconic structures that will become a tourist attraction in the Pontian district. He said the two iconic structures, shaped like sailboats and pineapple-themed decorations on the sides of the bridge, are expected to be among the latest unique attractions in the district. 'It is a bridge with specific landmarks and can be quite a positive upgrade for this area... the landmarks will be placed on the left and right sides of the bridge. Let's keep it a secret (its uniqueness),' he said. He said the addition of the iconic element is hoped to support the government's efforts to make Pontian, including Tanjung Piai, one of the main tourist centres in Johor, especially in the lead up to the Visit Johor Year 2026. He also said that the Public Works Ministry is in the process of submitting an application to widen another major bridge, the Parit Semerah Bridge, at an estimated cost of RM25 million through the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). In other developments, he added that the Pontian Hospital Expansion Project is scheduled to begin this year and is targeted for completion within six months, earlier than the original schedule of one year. Previously, Ahmad and Ministry of Public Works secretary-general Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim conducted a working visit to the Public Works Department (JKR) office in the Pontian district before continuing a series of visits to project sites, including the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge and Pontian Hospital. - Bernama

Govt to begin Budget 2026 consultations this Thursday

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will kick off its Budget 2026 consultation session this Thursday to collect feedback from various stakeholders, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the consultation session will run until the final draft of the national budget is completed and aims to gather as much input as possible to ensure that Budget 2026 reflects the aspirations of both the people and the private sector. 'This consultation session is part of our effort to hear from multiple parties about their expectations and concerns regarding the content of Budget 2026,' he said after delivering a keynote address at the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Nexus Forum (CNF25) today. Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. Fahmi explained that Budget 2026 will take into account ongoing initiatives, existing policies, as well as current geopolitical conditions and economic challenges. He said the budget will also align with the priorities outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) unveiled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last week. One of the key focus areas of the budget, Fahmi noted, will be on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which are vital to the national economy and play a major role in job creation. 'MSMEs are the lifeblood of our economy, contributing roughly 70 per cent of employment for Malaysians. It's therefore essential that the government understands the issues they face,' he said. According to the Parliamentary Calendar, Budget 2026 is scheduled to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 10. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan previously stated that Budget 2026, in line with the 13MP, will be pragmatic and practical, aimed at sustaining national progress, strengthening the economy amid global uncertainty, and building a more equitable and just society. - Bernama
