Test-Driving Theon Design's USA001, A Porsche 911 Restomod For America

Just over 18 months ago, I visited England and stopped by the small town of Banbury to drive a fresh Porsche 911 restomod built by a company called Theon Design. At the time, founder Adam Hawley intentionally made waves in the exploding Porsche restomod scene by self-proclaiming Theon the 'Singer of the U.K.' Now, Theon has completed the company's first build for an American client, and this time around Hawley brought the car out to Singer's home turf in Los Angeles for journalists to experience on the Angeles Crest Highway.
Familiar roads always help to accelerate—quite literally—my drive impressions. Especially since the previous build that I tested on the wrong side of the road was, in fact, a left-hand-drive 911 destined for Italy, which explains Theon's name for it: ITA001. The American car, therefore, goes by USA001. Yet despite the instantaneous familiarity of scene and settings, I still took the first few minutes behind the wheel purposefully easy, as Hawley in the passenger seat explained the purpose of the build.

'I've really enjoyed working with the owner,' he remarked. 'He calls the car perfect, for a start. We try and keep it as a 911, but just better in every way. And I think because the chassis is such a good chassis to start with, you can make all this massive bandwidth of a complete touring car, or a complete weekend beast.'
Unleashing the 911's inner beast takes on new form for USA001. Mounted behind the rear axles, in quintessential Porsche fashion, an air-cooled flat-six engine now displaces 4.0 liters and pumps out 405 horsepower. That's no joke in a sports car with carbon-fiber body panels that help to drop the wet weight to just 2,540 pounds. Yet Hawley's client intended from the get-go to drive the car on weekends, as well as potentially on the racetrack, so he wanted a drive-by-wire electronically controlled throttle. Which, in turn, allowed Hawley to program drive modes, selected via a newly developed knob on the steering column.

By about 10 minutes into my drive, I wanted the engine fully enlivened, the adjustable suspension from TracTive similarly dialed in and the exhaust fully opened up. Now, the car was raring and ready to go, as Hawley encouraged my efforts with a wry grin. His clear confidence that a Theon build can survive two full weeks of journalistic flogging only urged me further onward.
The engine rasps and rumbles right up to the tachometer's 7,000-rpm redline—and beyond, in fact, since peak power arrives at 7,500 rpm. But tractable torque delivery of 324 lb-ft, which hits at 5,800 rpm, makes the process of revving and gearshifting an absolute pleasure. Similar to ITA001, this customer specced a six-speed gearbox sourced from a 993-generation Carrera RS. The perfect gear ratios for mountain roads helped me get into a flow, and the single-mass flywheel results in stunning responsiveness, especially to throttle blips while heel-toe downshifting.

The drive-by-wire software even allows for an auto blip function, but where's the fun in that? I'm here for the raw nature of this screamer, the analog experience augmented with just a touch of class and modernity. The air conditioning blows ice-cold, for example, and the mildly assisted power steering makes driving around town at lower speeds a cinch, where a 30-millimeter front-axle lift system also prevents scrapes or driveway concerns. New aluminum trim developed since ITA001 left Theon's shop indicates Hawley's commitment to continued evolution. And the rear decklid spoiler extends and retracts at 45 miles an hour—but that's customizable, as with everything on the car, in the same vein as a 911 restomod from Singer Vehicle Design.
Having driven the fully realized form from both companies now, Theon's vision hews more closely to the original air-cooled experience—for better or worse, depending on personal taste. And USA001's specific breadth of capability, from an effortless elan to incessant eruption, caters to this specific client's wishes as much as anything.

'We can work with all of our customers and completely hone it to their fingerprint, basically,' Hawley told me after I handed him back the keys. 'The drive-by-wire and the switchable maps are absolutely lovely in the car. The fact that you have that ease of being able to drive it up a canyon road or through the city and it's not too intense… In reality, a Porsche is supposed to be an all-round car, you know, and I think the fact that it's such a great car to start with, explains why we don't try and reinvent it.'
Though the modern slate of restomods greatly exceeds the performance of Porsche's efforts from the late-1980s and early-1990s, when the 964-generation 911 donor car debuted, the weight distribution and steering feedback and floor-hinging clutch all bring me straight into that old reverie with ease. Only at a much quicker pace, in more comfort, and with the confidence that every last bit and bob received recent attention throughout the build process.

Would I take a 911 rebuilt by Theon, or Singer for that matter, at even money versus an original Porsche? Well, hard to resist a 993 Carrera RS… But for the customer who can make that choice, personal taste enters the conversation earlier. Personally, I lean toward the more hardcore end of the spectrum, where the raucous wild child of USA001 emerges with all the dials turned up to 11.
Hawley clearly recognized my proclivities and teased a forthcoming project in Theon's brainstorming phase: an R model targeting 550 horsepower and further lightweighting to bring the wet weight down below one metric ton. And if the all-rounder USA001 drives this well, this raw, I can only dream of the fun factor amplified to a whole new level.

As trade rules grow more uncertain and tariffs resurface in policy discussions, business leaders say they're rethinking everything from where factories are located to how products are priced. The old 'just in time' model is giving way to something more cautious: make goods closer to the buyer, ask for exemptions where possible, and stay alert to shifting consumer habits. This earnings season has been marked by currency swings, inflation, and political uncertainty. And in that environment, tariffs are no longer background noise. They're front and center in how companies are managing risk. For many in the C-suite, the threat isn't just about short-term costs — it's about staying competitive for the long haul. Build local, think political 'We are concerned about the competitiveness of aluminum compared to other materials,' Hydro Chief Financial Officer Trond Olaf Christophersen told CNBC earlier this week. The company is already passing U.S. tariff costs onto customers. But the deeper worry is how, 'some customers in packaging are already testing steel and plastic alternatives. That's the long game we're watching.' For Christophersen, it's not just a quarterly issue — it's a warning sign. And Hydro's concern reflects a broader shift: tariffs are speeding up lasting changes in how companies do business. One of the most common responses is moving production closer to customers. Ericsson CEO Börje Ekholm told CNBC the company's North American factory, opened in 2020, was a forward-looking move. 'We've had that 'Made in America' stamp for some time,' he said. The facility now helps protect the company from shifting global politics. Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson is also focused on the U.S. 'We want to fill our factory in South Carolina,' he told CNBC, noting that the company is breaking operations into more independent regions so local teams can respond quickly to new trade policies. Pharma giant AstraZeneca is also pivoting its footprint, rapidly shifting manufacturing to the U.S. and planning a $50 billion investment in local operations. 'We have lots of reasons to be here,' CEO Pascal Soriot said on the company's earnings call. For others, localization is as much about sovereignty as it is about logistics. 'We are building data centers for American hyperscalers in Europe, but also for Europeans in the U.S. It's a conscious decoupling,' Skanska CEO Anders Danielsson told CNBC. 'Sovereign tech is a real priority.' Not every company can shift where things are made. Some are relying on diplomacy. Rolls-Royce CFO Helen McCabe told CNBC the aerospace firm worked with U.K. and U.S. governments to win exemptions for key parts. 'It's not just about tariffs,' she said. 'It's about aligning our industrial footprint to minimize any friction.' That kind of behind-the-scenes outreach points to a bigger change: trade policy has become a key part of business planning. More companies are factoring in government relations and political risk when making decisions. Price hikes, policy risk and volatility Even the most proactive companies can't prepare for everything. Some are eating the higher costs. Others are raising prices — carefully. Lindt & Sprüngli, the premium chocolate maker, raised prices by 15.8% this year to offset soaring cocoa costs, driven partly by export restrictions in West Africa. 'We saw only a 4.6% decline in volume mix,' CEO Adalbert Lechner told CNBC. But he admitted that U.S. consumers are becoming more price-sensitive. Givaudan CEO Gilles Andrier shared a similar view. 'Some of our natural ingredients come from Africa and Latin America,' he told CNBC. 'So we're exposed to some tariffs there.' Even companies with local factories can't avoid all trade impacts when raw materials come from abroad. For companies tied to commodities, the trade duties are just one piece of a bigger puzzle: unpredictability. 'The tricky thing was, it was non-fundamentals-based volatility,' Shell CEO Wael Sawan told CNBC, describing recent swings in the oil market. 'This wasn't a change to physical commodity flows. This was really sort of paper-induced volatility.' That, he said, makes it harder to plan investments or manage price risk. Even in banking, where the direct impact of tariffs might seem small, the consequences are showing up. 'When you price risk now, you can't just look at credit or liquidity. You have to model policy unpredictability,' UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel told CNBC. That includes trade tensions, regulatory surprises, and election-related gridlock. This quarter makes one thing clear: policy is now a core business risk, not background noise. With elections ahead and industrial policy shifting, companies are localizing, diversifying, lobbying, and repricing faster than ever. Tariffs aren't just a cost — they're reshaping industries. When customers trade aluminum for steel or chocolate for cheaper treats, the threat isn't just margins. It's market share. So yes, leaders are building closer to home, pricing smarter, negotiating harder as they scramble to stay ahead of the next curveball.

The latest car news, reviews, and features. The Ruf CTR, often known by its nickname 'Yellowbird,' was a Porsche 911 Carrera so heavily customized that it essentially became a new car. A few were made to the same spec, but only one was painted Bordeaux Red and personally driven by Alois Ruf Jr. That's the car we're looking at here, and it's for sale. This 1989 Ruf CTR1 Lightweight, unofficially dubbed 'Redbird,' is one of six extra-lean CTRs ever made. To earn the Lightweight designation, some steel body panels were swapped for aluminum; there's no center console, no roll cage, no power brakes, no sunroof, no radio, some chassis sound-deadening foam is gone, and the seats are extra-light ones. RM Sotheby's The twin-turbo flat-six bored to 3.4-liters, Ruf five-speed transmission, and chassis reinforcements are still present, though. These cars claimed 211 mph in 1987—a ridiculous speed for a vehicle this delicate in any era—letting it win Road & Track's 'World's Fastest Car' shootout that year. But '89 was when the 'Faszination on the Nürburgring' video was released, cementing Ruf's awesomeness in the minds of anybody who had the chance to see it. This particular car, the ninth CTR built (of 29 total, six of which were Lightweight models), was reportedly stored at Alois Ruf Jr.'s house and used as his personal car to some extent before being delivered to its first real owner. Mr. Ruf himself was, of course, the tuner whose obsession with tinkering on 911s got one of the most elite Porsche customization houses into the annals of history after taking over Ruf from his father (also named Alois). But even without the fun backstory, the spec on this thing is just incredible. The red-over-dark-brown has a real richness to it. I feel like I can smell the interior through some of these photos. I mean, the whole car is just delightful to look at. Sadly, for most of us, looking is all we'll be doing with it—R.M. 2026 Porsche 911 Turbo Debuts This Year With A Hybrid For The First Time

In 1974, attendees at the Paris Motor Show bore witness to the debut of the first-ever turbocharged Porsche 911, arriving a year after the 911 RSR Turbo concept race car. After capping an incredible era with the special-edition 911 Turbo 50 Years at Monterey Car Week last year, we're in an era of significant change once again. Just as the 911 could not escape the performance and efficiency benefits of forced induction, so the Turbo S cannot escape the same promises or electrification. As part of the same 2025 half-year earnings call in which Porsche CEO Oliver Blume confirmed the evaluation of a new gas crossover for production by 2028, the arrival of the 992.2 generation of the most powerful 911 nameplate will take place later this year, and it will be a hybrid for the first time. We've seen this coming for some time. The 992.1 2025 911 Turbo S produces 640 horsepower and 590 lb-ft from its 3.7-liter twin-turbo boxer. Those figures were sufficient five years ago, but no longer. With the introduction of the 992.2 Carrera GTS last year, Porsche enlarged the 3.0-liter in the Carrera to a 3.6, yet with the help of the high-voltage T-Hybrid system, fuel consumption remained the same, turbo lag was reduced, and output jumped by 59 hp and 29 lb-ft to 532 hp/449 lb-ft. The result? The GTS T-Hybrid is quicker to 60 mph by 0.3 seconds and an impressive 8.7 seconds faster around the Nürburgring, despite an extra 103 pounds on the scales. Those sorts of performance benefits are too good to ignore for Porsche's AWD supercar killer. Although unconfirmed at this stage, we can be all but certain that the system will be a mild-hybrid with a small battery to keep weight as low as possible. We suspect an electric motor or two on the front axle could be paired with an electric turbocharger, but whether there will be one like the GTS or two like contemporary 911 Turbo and Turbo S models is more of a mystery. One makes sense for packaging, but perhaps Porsche will want a unique engine configuration for its fastest 911s. Since the ultimate 911, the GT2 RS, is traditionally an even more focused GT3 RS with a higher-output version of the engine in a 911 Turbo S and the deletion of the AWD system, it now seems that rumors of the incoming GT2 RS gaining a small hybrid system will prove to be true. It's even more difficult to stay competitive without a turbo - the 992.2 911 GT3's naturally aspirated engine required components from the GT3 RS and special new filters to meet emissions regulations while maintaining horsepower. Despite the best efforts of the engineers in Stuttgart, the inevitable trade-off was a loss in torque, so it's not inconceivable that even the GT3 might someday go hybrid, though Porsche will do everything in its power - including blaze trails in the development of synthetic fuels - to prevent that. While the inevitable weight penalty that will come with hybridizing the 911 Turbo is a tough pill to swallow, so was adapting to the turbo lag of the original widowmaker 50 years ago. Meeting emissions limits and customer expectations of performance inevitably leads to the implementation of new technologies, and that's kind of the point of the 911 Turbo in the first place.
